Its great to have our twinned town back with us on our new site.
We hope to keep Scarborough and Cahir updated in all the goings on, so keep coming back and please contact us with your news and views on cahirnews@cahirda.com, on the otherhand if you wish to read all about the origins of the friendship between the two towns, please click here

Cahir has been formally twinned with Scarborough, in North Yorkshire, since 2003. However, the links between the two towns go back further than that.  Click here to read more about the background to this happy relationship >>>
Every September since the mid-nineties a party of Scarborians has visited Cahir. (This is when their Summer Season is over.)  They travel over by coach and spend the week seeing the South East from their base in Cahir.  This trip is organised by Mike Manning, and there is always a waiting list for seats on the coach.

Cahir people visit Scarborough annually, too.  This year the visit took place in April, and the next will be in May 2006.  On this occasion the highlight of the trip will be the Annual Dinner and Dance of the Scarborough/Cahir Community Youth Trust on 13th May.  There will also be a reception in the Queens Hotel on 14th, plus plenty of personal time.  Anyone wishing to travel to Scarborough from Cahir should contact Maureen Calvert on 086 840 5020.
The above-mentioned Trust funds an annual trip to Cahir for children who would not otherwise have a holiday.  They are always about 10 years old and quite literally have the time of their lives.  For many it is a life-changing opportunity and it is always great to hear about those who, as they grow up, have overcome their backgrounds and gone on to lead productive lives.

A report on the most recent visit that is published in South Tipp TODAY (Wednesday 9th November ) is copied below.

SAFE HOME!
It was good to hear from Mike Manning that the party of children from Scarborough got back safely last Thursday night, as the weather report had been terrible.  As Mike said:

“They said the sea was rough, but all the children were so good, and they watched an entertainer all the way home.  They were very tired when we arrived in Scarborough at 11:30pm!  They were really lovely kids on this trip and so well behaved”.

All who met them during their precious holiday in Cahir would have to agree with this.  They were a lovely bunch.  As usual, they were all about 10 years old, and for various reasons would never have had a holiday, nor any likelihood of having one.

All the groups of schoolchildren that have visited here over the years have been great ambassadors for Scarborough.  They always stay at The Wishing Well, where they get very special treatment, and they do all the usual things:  Blarney, Cork Jail, Waterford Crystal, etc etc. At Waterford Crystal, the Manager was so impressed with them, this time, that he asked Mike to let him know when he is bringing the next group, so he can do something special for them.

On their last day in Cahir they go shopping for themselves and/or their families, having each been given some spending money by the Trust that runs the trips.  And then they have what has become the traditional evening meal in The Shamrock Lounge, where Hughie, Margaret and their staff give them a great send-off.  This is the occasion when they receive Cahir medals, and they make presentations to many of their friends here.

It was lovely to see the children and their band of dedicated ‘minders’, and I look forward to my next visit to Scarborough to catch up with them all again.

This seems an opportune moment to remind readers that the next organised visit will be for the Scarborough/Cahir Community Youth Trust’s Annual Dinner on Friday 13th May.  There will be a Reception the following night in The Queen’s Hotel – where I always stay (so convenient!) and plenty of personal time as well.  Please give me a ring if you want to join in the fun.
