AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
If you are one of those people who like to start off the New Year with great intentions, why not make this year, 2007, the year you join Amnesty International?

When people went up to Helen Ryan at the Amnesty Stall in Donal’s SuperValu before Christmas, they expressed an interest in the work of Amnesty and a desire to get involved.  Now is the time to get started and the first meeting of the year is next Monday, 8th January in Mikey Ryan’s pub, Cashel, at 8:30pm.

If you want to fulfil your New Year’s Resolution and help other whose human rights are being violated, why not go along next Monday?  And if someone who wants to go would be prepared to give me (a non-driver) a lift, I would be very grateful.

There is a cup of tea and a chat after the meeting and the whole thing is over in less than two hours. If you would like further information, you can right the Coordinator, Nicole, on 05262987.

IRISH CLASSES FOR ADULTS
A short course of Irish Classes for Beginners and/or Improvers will commence3 on Monday 15th January.

The classes will be held in the old VEC building, in Church Street, from 8pm, so why not avail yourselves of this cultural opportunity.  Telephone M T Ni Cathain on 052 45884 for further information.

TUBRID HOLY WELL RECYCLING CENTRE
Bob Bramham sent me this cri de coeur recently and perhaps it will touch a chord with someone who has the ability to do something about it - but don’t hold your breath, Bob!  Along with many others who have complained to me about it, I am still waiting for the yellow paint on the footpath in Castle Street to be removed!  To say nothing of the dangerous state of the footpath in “my” part of Market Yard - it’s a wonder someone hasn’t broken their neck there already.  I have asked the Council to do something about it three times over the last two years, to no avail. I hope you are more successful.

Last Spring a new dumpling place was opened up
A handy nice local town dump
An old car was pyt by the old Holy Well
Someone threw it with one great big thump.

Someone else moved it round, it was in the way
And it stood there for the whole year
And now there’s a fridge by its old rusting side,
the beginning of loads more I fear.

Pr’aps a lorry will come, then a couple of vans.
Householders with big plastic bags.
It will spread to the gate, Council hurry don’t be late
Or else the place will be in rags.

Every year I did clean up that old Tubrid Well
Rake the leaves and the nuts from the stream
Leave the water to drink
Just sit there and think
Of the old Tubrideans to dream.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB’S REVIEW OF 2006
As we say farewell to another year, we look back on a very memorable twelve months for our Club.  With membership steadily on the increase, it is a source of great encouragement for all involved to see such interest in the Club.

We have packed a lot of work into the last year, beginning in February with Indoor Camogie in Coláiste Dún Iascaigh.  Also during the month the Club’s Officers attended a GAA Conference organised by Fr Tom Fogarty in Thurles. The U-14 girls availed of the All Weather Pitch at Duneske to get in some extra training while the days were short and dark.

In April, when the weather improved and the evenings were bright, we returned outdoors to the pitches of Duneske, with teams ranging in age from U-8 right up to U-16.

The U-14 team had a busy time in May, with wins over Ballingarry and St Mary’s, but were unlucky in the Final of the Community Games, when they lost out to a much stronger Boherlahan side.

In June, history was made when a gallant U-11 Schools team won the Final of the Cuman na mBun Scoil in Thurles, bringing the honour to Our Lady of Mercy Primary School for the first time.

July saw most of our players enjoy the GAA Summer Camp in Duneske, while in the same month an invitation from Ballingarry to a Camogie Blitz saw our U-14s narrowly beaten in the Final and our U-12s coming away with first place in their category.

In August our U-8 players got their first taste of a Challenge game, when they took part in a Blitz which our own Club organised at Duneske, with teams from Cork and Limerick, as well as Thurles, competing in the U-10 section.  Members from the Club helped out with the GAA Fashion Show as well as the Fundraising Push, which were also held in August.

Club members made their way to Croke Park in September for the All Ireland Camogie Final and the following week to The Ragg for a most memorable County Semi-Final between our U-12s and Nenagh.  It was one of the memorable events of the year, with our girls just losing by 1 point in a fiercely contested game both on and off the pitch!!

Also during the month, we travelled to Thurles to compete in an U-10 Blitz with victory again coming back to Cahir.

October and November saw the U-16 team in action, with great wins up along their campaign that brought them to a County Final against Boherlahan on 10th December.  It was the icing on the cake, bringing the year to a fantastic end with a fine win and County Medals for those hardworking girls.  Michael “babs” Keating presented the girls with their medals on 19th December at a function held in Cahir House Hotel, along with the U-12 Hurlers who were also receiving their County Medals.

We are extremely grateful to the parents of the girls in the Club for all their help and encouragement during the year;  to the Galileo Restaurant in Cahir for their most kind sponsorship of a set of jerseys; to the partners at Duneske for their facilities; and to Mrs Finnegan Burke at Coláiste Dún Iascaigh.  Special thanks to the public in general who, with their support of our various fundraising events during the year, enabled us to bring the Club to new and exciting levels.

We leave 2006 with great anticipation for the New Year ahead, which will see us introduce a Junior team for the first time, that will add a completely new dimension to the Club. We look forward to introducing more new members to the fun and skill of playing Camogie and take this opportunity to wish one and all a happy and prosperous 2007.

CAHIR GAA JUVINILE CLUB
With the new year now upon us it is time to prepare for the new season ahead. With this in mind the indoor hurling  for U8’S ,10S’ &12’s will resume again in the Colaiste on Thursday 11 January. U8’S will start at 6.30 and finish at 7.15. U10’S will start at 7.15 and finish at 8.00. U12’S will start at 8.00 and finish at 9.00. These times will have to be adhered to so it will be important that children arrive and are collected on time. New players are always welcome. Please remember there is a 2 euro cover charge. On behalf of the club I would like to wish everyone a happy and successful new year and lets hope for a couple of trophies in the new year.
