CAHIR NOTES

N.B. BALLINGEARY I.C.A.
There is a change of venue for the next meeting of Ballingeary ICA. It will be held in the Parish rooms, next to the Day Care Centre in St Mary’s Road, Cahir, onWednesday 3rd September at 8pm.

Ballingeary School House is undergoing some repair work and the building will be closed temporarily.

The speaker will be Mr John Campbell of “The Massage Hut”, Tubrid. The Hostesses for the evening will be Maura O’Brien, Phil Buckley, Teresa O’Dwyer and Alice Blake. All are welcome to this meeting.

CHURCH GATE COLLECTION
The Cahir Parent & Toddler Group is holding its annual Church Gate Collection this weekend, 30th and 31st August.

The Group will re-open after the summer break on Thursday 4th September at the Community Hall from 10:30am to 12:30pm.

All parents, carers, babies and pre-school children are welcome. For more details you can contact Rebecca on 087 299 4706.

It is a little while since I visited this group, but I am always impressed with the great atmosphere provided for the adults as well as the toddlers. There are some wonderful toys, which are renewed on a very regular basis, and an opportunity for the adults to exchange experiences - something I found absolutely invaluable all those years ago when I had two toddlers - it is all too easy to become isolated at this time.  So please give generously.

APPLY FOR THIRD LEVEL GRANTS NOW!
The Government has recently announced a widening of the income limits for eligibility for grants for third level education. Deputy Mattie McGrath is encouraging students who will be attending in the forthcoming academic year to investigate whether they are eligible.

Under the new rules, the top income limit for qualifying for the grant (where there are less than four children) has increased from €48,335 to €49,690.

Additionally, the income threshold for the full maintenance grant has increased from €18,055 to €20,147, to ensure families on the lowest incomes continue to qualify for the maximum grant rates.

The deadline for applications is this Friday, 29th August, so apply NOW.

CAHIR PARK LADIES’ SOCCER
Tipperary Shield Semi-Final at Killenaule on Friday 22nd August.
Cahir Park 0 Killenaule 3.

A fast-starting Killenaule scored in the first minute and struck again in the 9th minute. With the Cahir defence under pressure, goalkeeper Ania Gordzieyczyk excelled with numerous courageous saves.  Midway through the first half, Cahir created a couple of scoring chances: a long-range free by Alison Lonergan grazed the cross-bar.

In the second half, Killenaule got their third goal in the 46th minute. The Park contested very well, with the defence of Sinead O’Donnell, Niamh Hearne, Eilish Hennessy, Aoife Casey and goalkeeper Ania.

In midfield, Stephanie Elliott, Ann Marie Noonan, Aine O’Mahony and Alison Lonergan combined well.

Strikers Nicola Armitage and Natalie Pinto battled hard without success. Manager Eamonn Elliott was encouraged by the commitment of the players, with the Tipperary Cup starting shortly. Special thanks go to the loyal supporters.

Player of the Match went to Ania Gordzieyczyk.

CAHIR BUZZING IN THE RAIN

Last Wednesday, 20th August, the Cahir Debs left for their celebrations in Cork. What a pity there was a downpour while they were waiting to board the coaches. However, they seemed happy enough and looked great - there were some really lovely dresses and the guys scrubbed up very well too - it is amazing what a black tie will do for a man.

If anyone has photos that they would like to put on the website, please let me know - all those published and more will go up automatically. Just drop a print into the B&T Centre.

At the same time, “The Tudors” was being filmed in the Castle, and what a great location it was for the programme. Can’t wait to see that episode. The filming brought plenty of business to the town, with Cahir House full and the top floor of The River House booked for them. I understand they were a great bunch and there were plenty of laughs.

THE ROSES & THE ROCK

Joe Ahearn with the lovely Tipperary Rose, who went on to win the contest on Wednesday night

On Thursday21st August the 31 Roses who are in the Rose of Tralee competition visited the Rock of Cashel and then had a welcome break and some very nice eats and a good choice of drinks, including champagne.

Joe Ahern had put a poster up in the Credit Union inviting anyone who wished to join in the celebrations, and there were quite a few locals there, mingling and chatting with the Roses.

As usual, they are a lovely group of girls, and meeting them makes one so much more aware that The Rose of Tralee is far from being just another beauty pageant.

It was great to meet Aislinn Ryan and her family, who have such strong Cahir connections, and I am looking forward to catching up with them after the event is over. Having met her, I am more sure than ever that Aislinn is right up there with a great chance. However, the organisers ensure that each and every Rose has a week to remember for the rest of their lives.

I must say that I got a lot of pleasure from meeting the very first Tipperary Rose too - the betting on her is very strong and I will be glued to the box again (still!) What with the Olympics and now the Roses, I am rapidly developing square eyes.

EDUCATIONAL SEGREGATION CRITICISED
Minister of State at the Department of Finance Dr Martin Mansergh TD has strongly criticised calls made by Fine Gael Education Spokesman Brian Hayes Td to segregate immigrant children as ill-advised and potentially divisive.

Minister Mansergh continued “Recent suggestions made by Deputy Hayes about immigrant children are irresponsible. The word “segregation” has very negative connotations. It bring to mind images of racial segregation at a time when racism was not only condoned but was an everyday reality in many parts of the world.

“I would be disappointed if Deputy Hayes is consciously using emotive language for assumed political advantage, and if he is speaking for the Fine Gael party in that regard” concluded Minister Mansergh.

HERITAGE WEEK SPECIAL AT CAHIR FARMERS MARKET

The summer went somewhere else, but don’t let that matter, because the people of Cahir can celebrate 2008 Heritage Week this week, by visiting Cahir Castle, and take in the River Walk to the Swiss Cottage, to list just a few of the many treasures in the area of the town itself.

And of course Cahir Farmers Market has been in operation now for five years in the Carpark next the old Granary on Church Street.  The Market commenced trading in 2003 and now has eleven regular stalls offering a large variety of produce from the local area.  For Heritage Week the stallholders are organising a Special Market with lots of Fun activities for young and old, including –

Live music
Face painting
Art Competition
Eddie Cotter’s Vintage VW  ‘Beetle’ motorcar,
Draw for Free Hamper of Market food.

In times past, the Granary would have been a hive of activity at this time of year, but after it ceased taking in grain it fell into disrepair, and became a serious town eyesore.  It was saved in the 1990’s and restored to become a useful commercial building once again, accommodating a range of commercial enterprises.  The Granary and the River Suir below has given a pleasant backdrop to the Farmers Market, making the visit to the Market very enjoyable.

CAHIR & DISTRICT LADIES’ CLUB
The Ladies have organised a Beauty Course for six consecutive weeks starting on Monday 1st September at 8pm. The venue is the McAuley Room at the Day Care Centre. The Committee is looking forward to meeting all those who signed up and any other ladies who would like to attend.

“HOT  SUNNY POLAND!”
I have just received a card from Polish friends who have gone home for a holiday - I hope they bring their sun with them when they return this week! Welcome back to Ania and family.

BILL MURPHY BACK IN HIS ALMA MATER
I received this e-mail from one of Bill’s best friends last week:  “Bill is not well and is back in hospital again. He is not in a private room but in the Male Medical Ward of the South Infirmary in Cork, and this is where you can address correspondence, which will be read to him“.

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
The numbers drawn last week, witnessed by Helaine Gallagher, were 1, 10, 14 and 25. The five Lucky Dip winners, each of whom received €30, were: Aine & Padraig Roche, Abbey Street; Finbarr O’Reilly, Duneske; John & Geraldine Hickey, Pearse Street; Vincent & Catherine Bray, Carrigeen and Michael Coonan, c/o The Abbey Tavern, - all in Cahir.

The Jackpot stands at €1,750 this week, and tickets can be bought up to the last minute (noon) from the Business & Training Centre. The profits from the Community Lotto service community projects in Cahir.

GET WELL SOON
Jennifer Thompson, who recently joined the staff at the Business & Training Centre, became ill suddenly last week and was rushed to hospital. However, all is now well and I hope she will be able to return soon, as she is sorely missed, as much for her sunny personality as for her ability to steam through the work.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES

 Well done Emma,

Croke Park may not have been the most pleasant of experiences for the majority of Tipperary people on Sunday August 17th, but for one Cahir girl it was a day that she will remember for the rest of her life. 12 year old Emma Buckley had the fantastic honour and privilege in creating a bit of history for her school and indeed for her Camogie Club, when she was selected to take part in the primary game which was played during half time at the senior hurling final.

Emma has proved herself to be one of the most stylish centre backs during the past year. She played an excellent role in bringing the U13 title to her school, Our Lady of Mercy Cahir, and was vital to her club in bringing off U12 League and Championship honours last year. Her ability to read the game has proved one of her strongest attributes and her free taking and side line cuts are a joy to watch. To have played before a crowd in excess of 50 thousand in Croke Park was a tremendous feat, but we are quite confident it won't be the last time that this girl will be seen in such a stadium. We are indeed proud and honoured to have such a pleasant, talented and hardworking girl in our club. Again from all in Cahir camoige club, well done Emma.

DUNESKE MINI OLYMPICS!!!

Last Saturday morning we had our own little mini Olympics in Duneske when it was the turn of our U10 panel to enjoy the company of five other clubs in a camogie Blitz. Although the weather in China was probably a little better than we had, this didn't damper the spirits of any of the players and proceedings got under way at around 11am.While the rain got a little bit heavier it was very encouraging to see in excess of 70 girls out on the field and listening to parents and friends under umbrella's and raincoats shouting on words of encouragement to the players.Sometimes we can forget about the younger players in our clubs but it is vital to organise these games in as non-competitive way as possible so as they can learn to really enjoy their sport and remain playing for years to come. There is no better way to make friends and encourage children's social skills than when they are involved in a team sport of any kind, helping them to realise the value of other people on their team and respect for the opposition that they are up against. On this hand much praise must go to all the parents and coaches who turned up in Duneske on Saturday morning and gave of their time to encourage these girls along. Also many thanks to the members of our own club who turned up in force to help out and indeed a very special thank you to our three young referees: Leanne Hickey, Aoife O' Gorman and Emma Corcoran who also gave off their time to take charge of the games. Our sincere thanks to Ballingarry, Annacarty, Thurles, St. Mary's Clonmel and Moyle Rovers who made the journey to Cahir to take part in the Blitz.
While training continues on Wednesday evenings for all levels at 7pm the Junior, U16 and 18 teams are also training on Saturday mornings at 11am in Duneske so this is a reminder to all involved to turn up for training as there will be games at this level continuing over the next few weeks.

ST KIERANS FC

Don Tuohy here from St. Kierans fc. I would be grateful if you could include this report in the paper this week.
St. Kierans began their season on Sunday the 24th of August with a hard fought victory over Killenaule Rovers in the 2nd division Shield.
They went behind late in the first half but with 15 mins left in the game levelled through Ray Allen.
As the tie had to be decided on the day, the match went straight to penalties where the impressive Aaron Wall made two fine saves in his competitive debut for the club. The shootout went to sudden death where Jason Allen stood up and scored the winning penalty putting St. Kierans through to the 2nd round of the competition.
St. Kierans kick off their league campaign next Sunday the 31st of August in the Duneske sports complex against Glengoole United.

THE TUDORS CAME TO CAHIR!!!

Getting ready for THE TUDORS  The metal handrail had to be replaced with a more authentic wooden one

And the metal gates had to come down to make way for these "older" wooden ones,

so as to make the background suitably old for filming

Filming in the castle grounds  Making sure the costume is  right

 Enjoying a rest between scenes

Cahir recently saw some colour and excitemnet with the arrival of a BBC film crew and some of the cast of the  hit BBC TV series THE TUDORS, when they came to film in Cahir Castle on Wednesday 20th August, the same day as the Debs departed for Cork. from the Castle car park. (see above pictures)

READERS’ NEWS & VIEWS
It has been great to receive news from far and wide, and to know that the Community Website (www.cahirnews.cahirda.com) is used world-wide. My thanks to the hard-working staff at the Business & Training Centre who up-date the news every week - it is appreciated by so many! My sister in Canada pointed out, somewhat bitterly, that the best way to get news of my life is to read the Notes. (I’m not a great correspondent, I am afraid, even when using e-mails).

Anyway, keep the news coming, and congratulations on getting your messages in to me as early as possible. You can reach me at 10 Market Yard / 086 840 5020 and at the e-mail address above.
