CAHIR NOTES

WHO IS PAYING FOR THE LIGHTS?
Very many of the standard lamps in Cahir are on all day. Why?

The answer to the question as to who is paying for them is easy - in the final analysis it is us! Even for the ESB, this situation is pretty bad.

PUB QUIZ FOR REHAB
Powers Whiskey and Cahir House Hotel are organising a Table Quiz in aid of Rehab. This wonderful organisation is  trying to raise €100,000 for the Rehab Services in Ireland.

The Quiz will take place on Thursday 16th October at 9pm and the Entrance Fee is €40 per team of four. If you have any enquiries you can telephone the Hotel on 052 43000

WELL DONE, LAZY BEAN
Karen O’Donovan is delighted with the final total of the money raised at her recent Coffee Morning in aid of the South Tipperary Hospice. The amount comes to €3,700 - this is €1,700 more than last year, and it took just two hours to raise it, as there were hardly any people there until 11am.

The Staff of ‘The Bean’ very generously donated their morning’s salary to the cause, and Karen wishes to express her thanks to them, to everyone who helped and to all those who donated the wonderful Raffle prizes which have become such a feature of the event.

SHAMROCK  DARTS CLUB
The AGM of this popular Club is this Friday, 10th October at 9pm sharp. Hughie adds that all members are expected to attend.

ATTENTION SHIFT WORKERS
There is a new ECDL Course beginning on Saturday 18th October. This course is to be run on Saturdays only, accommodating those on shift work.

For further information or to book in, please ring Jennifer or Helen on 052 43224 or 42616. Their e-mail address is info@cahirda.com.

LONERGAN DELIVERS ON BUS SHELTER
After four years of tenacious campaigning by Cllr Seanie Lonergan, a bus shelter has been erected in Castle Street. During these years, the Labour Party Councillor has raised the issue at County Council level and made several trips to Waterford to meet Bus Eireann officials. Cllr Lonergan has also had the issue raised nationally by Deputy Roisin Shorthall, and more recently by Deputy Tommy Broughan. The Councillor states that ‘This bus shelter is long overdue. Both locals and tourists have at long last a proper shelter, as winter fast approaches. The lesson to be derived from this episode is that hard work and tenacity pays off. I am delighted to have been instrumental in delivering such a positive outcome for everyone’.

NEW BUS SHELTER FOR CASTLE STREET
Deputy Mattie McGrath, welcoming the erection of the new bus shelter outside the Tourist office, said “I have been several years campaigning, as have others, for a bus shelter to be erected at Castle Street, Cahir, and I am delighted that, finally, this is the case.

“I would like to thank the businesses in the area for sheltering people in previous years, during times of bad weather, while they have waited for their buses. For so long, the elderly and students were without this essential shelter and it is very welcome, now that we are beginning to enter another winter season”.

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
As it is some time since the Jackpot was won, the amount going on to this week’s draw is €2,650. Last week’s numbers were ;4, 8, 15 and 21.

The five Lucky dip winners last week were: Eddie Lonergan, Townspart; Con O’Brien, Clonmore; Mary Myles, Ballylooby; Catherine Murphy, Abbey Street and Catherine Stead, Mountain Road - all in the Cahir area.

All the profits from the Community Lotto go to community projects in Cahir.

GARDA RESERVE
During September, there was a marketing campaign in County Tipperary to raise awareness in the county and in the media of the Garda Reserve. There were stands in shopping centres, including SuperValu in Cahir, where information was offered and queries were answered.

Anyone who missed out on these events and is interested in the Garda Reserve still has a few weeks in which to apply - until the end of November. For details look at www.publicjobs.ie  or www.garda.ie and click on the Garda Reserve link. For more information and answers to your queries, please contact Alan on 086 828 1562.

SCARBOROROUGH CHILDREN’S TRIP
On Saturday 26th October there are 20 children arriving in Cahir by coach and they will stay at the Wishing Well, until the following Thursday (that’s 6 days). There will be five adults with them, with Samantha Manning leading the tour this year.

Mike Manning will be coming over as well, flying in with George and Christine and Alisdair and Ann, so there will be quite a few of them in Cahir that week. I think he feels it is time to leave the hard work to the next generation, and Sam fills the bill to perfection. It will be lovely to see them all again, as I missed Mike on his recent short visit - I completely ran out of steam and didn’t go anywhere.

I am afraid Mike may not be able to read this on the website, as something seems to be wrong with it - hopefully it will be sorted out asap.

CHILDREN’S HALLOWE’EN WORKSHOP
There will be an Art & Craft Hallowe’en Workshop at The Craft Granary on 25th October.  The time from 10am to 12 noon is aimed at children from 5 to 10 years old. As the Workshop is limited to 10 places, bookings should be made early. The cost is €8 per child. You can book by telephone to 052 43873 or call in to the Craft Granary.

CRUMLIN CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL SAYS THANK YOU
Patsy Cunningham has sent me the following - how about some photos, Patsy?

“Well, the trip was a major challenge, but we survived to tell the tale. We landed in Los Angeles after a long flight and picked up the motorbikes from Eaglerider Motorcycles. Mostly Harleys, 6 Honda Gold Wings and 4 Gold Wing Trikes.

“104 people took part and 74 bikes took to the road. We headed to San Diego first, then on to Yuma. The temperature started to rise to over 104? plus ground heat and engine heat! People started to get heat stroke and sun stroke. At night the temperature dropped to freezing and a few mornings we had ice on the bikes. The people who dehydrated were OK the next day.

“Up to Los Vegas - this place is alright if you’re into gambling. There are casinos everywhere, but the recession is showing there too with not so many people to fill them. The bright lights and buildings are nice though. From there we went to Tucson Arizona and on to Flagstaff, where we got hit with heavy cold rain and huge hail stones, but only for about 20 miles - then on to the Grand Canyon, where there is some of the most breath-taking scenery and roads you will ever see.

“Next we went to Mammoth Lake on on to Lake Tahoe, which is beautiful all year round, with plenty to do and see: mountains; lakes; scenic drives and wild animals a-plenty.

“From there we set off to San Francisco, where we played a Gaelic match with the local teams. Some ladies played too. At one point in the game we had 28 players on the pitch and we took a few of their players too. Well, we won the match but only be 1 goal. I think the Ref was on our side and the linesman scored a goal for us.

“Leaving there, we headed down the coast road, mountains on one side, a sheer drop to the sea on the other, no room for error as we drove. Down to Malibu and Santa Monica pier, finishing off in Los Angeles again, to drop off the bikes. Over 3000 miles covered, everyone had smiles as big as the Grand Canyon for making it around in one piece. The organisers had a lot of work to do to keep us all together and the whole trip went like clockwork, so a big thank-you to them and to you, the people of Cahir, and anyone else
Who helped us, because the trip raised over €400,000 for Crumlin - give yourselves a big round of applause”.

FAIR EXCHANGE
On 31st October, Hallowe’en, Cahir-based band Fair Exchange will play a monster gig in Cahir House Hotel, with mostly 70s and 80s songs. Local DJ Derek Roche will spin the discs after that. All the proceeds from this event will go to Crumlin Hospital.

Fair Exchange are not new to fundraising having raised a lot of money over the years for charities, so do go along and support this great band and DJ and have a great night. Admission will be €10 and there is a Bar Extension and security. Tickets are available from Pat Cunningham, Anne Cunningham and Joe Shine (and, presumably, at the Hotel?)

NEW EXHIBITION AT THE CRAFT GRANARY
Last week I omitted to put in the location of Liana Lovie’s exhibition, for which many apologies.  This showing will run until 23rd October and consists of landscapes, animal and abstract paintings. I haven’t seen it yet as I am occupied with something else at the moment, but intend to get down there next week.

ST KIERAN’S F.C.
St Kieran’s placed Cashel Town in the Munster Junior Cup last Sunday and were, unfortunately, beaten 5 - 1. The scoreline did not really reflect the game. They were nil 1 down at half time to the 1st Division leaders and five minutes into the second half went 2 nil down.

Five minutes later, Alan O’Donoghue pulled one back for St Kieran’s after great work by Ray Allen put him through. However, with ten minutes left, Cashel restored their two-goal lead and scored 2 more before the 90 minutes were up. St Kieran’s, to their credit, never game up and battled to the end.

St Kieran’s play Gengoole United next Sunday in the second round of the FAI Junior Cup. Good luck, guys - I am really enjoying following your season.

KNOCKGRAFFON CARDS
Cards in Knockgraffon have started again on Wednesday nights. Play begins at 8:45pm sharp, with refreshments afterwards. This is a Progressive 25 Drive and all are welcome.
(Maybe the Friday nighters from Active Retirement could fit in another game?)

ROSEMOUNT RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
This Association covers the extended area around Rosemount, including Butler’s Court, and has been very active over the year, coming away with the Most Improved Estate award in the Tidy Cahir competition winning a Plaque and a €50 Voucher. They also won the “Black Spot” prize, of €300 earlier in the year.

The Association held its AGM on Wednesday 1st October in the Shamrock Lounge. This meeting was not well supported, compared with the support given before they broke up for the Summer.  A new Committee was formed, as follows:

Chairperson - Jakie Kelleher; Secretary - Rita Condon; Treasurer - Geraldine Kearns, PRO Muriel McGuire.

A plan for the year was discussed, with one of the main projects to be the wall opposite Riverdale. They looked at getting this wall painted, but that worked out too expensive. It is an eye-sore with capping missing, so perhaps a planter will be planted on it. [There is an excellent stonemason on the CDA Fás Team - perhaps you should have a word with Tim Shanahan? MC]

The Committee is hoping to get a Newsletter out soon to bring the residents up-to-date with what is happening in the area. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday 22nd October in the Shamrock Lounge at 8pm.

A REMINDER that the mini clean-up is still ongoing on the last Thursday of every month - the meeting point is at the stone at Rosemount Avenue at 7pm - all welcome!

POULMUCKA PLOUGHING
Members of the Association were busy at the National Ploughing Championships at Cuffesgrange last week. Eddie Hally, National Chairman, was kept busy at the NPA headquarters, ensuring dignitaries were well looked after. Sean Hickey’s presence as Health and Safety Officer, was required before and during the event. Road Captains and Judges thoroughly enjoyed their jobs.

Well done to all competitors who ploughed in glorious sunshine. Congratulations to John O’Brien Jr who achieved 2nd Place in the Under 21s category.

The Association is holding its Ploughing Match on Sunday 2nd November on the lands of Thomas Prendergast, by kind permission.

CAHIR FAIR TRADE
The next meeting  of this group will take place next Monday, 13th October, instead of the first Monday in the month, which is the usual day.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS MARIA
Now that this paper appears in outlets on Tuesday evening, and as this is Maria Taylor’s actual birthday, for once I’m not late. Love from all your family and friends.

SECOND CHANCE
In case anyone has not made up their mind whether to come to the Charity Fashion Show in Cahir House on Friday night, I can assure you that it is intended to be an entertaining evening out. I am convinced that what the audience wants to see on a night like this is NOT expressionless models hackneying their way up and down, but people who enjoy the clothes they are wearing, and put in that little bit extra. There are some great Spot Prizes, (some can be seen in a window on the Square) and no speeches, so go on, join us on the night.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES
A reminder to all that outdoor training on Wednesday evenings has come to an end for this season and will resume next year when the days get brighter again.

Last Saturday our U10 girls and our U13 girls made their way to Thurles for the host clubs Blitz. The U10 team played three great games against Drum, St. Mary's and HolyCross. While they did not emerge victorious they all battled hard with notable performances from Jessica Coffey, Melanie Deveraux, Emily Donovan and Lauren Noonan and great goal scoring from Kirsty Arbuckle.
The U10 panel: Orla Cashman, Sarah Burke, Dervla Buckley, Melanie Deveraux, Jessica Coffey, Emily Donovan, Emma O Donnell, Andrea O Donnell, Rachel O Donnell, Lauren Noonan, Kirsty Arbuckle, Emma Quirke, Sophie Sheehan, Eileen Flannery, Ashling Moloney, Roisin McCarthy,

The U13 team had three strong games against Roscrea, Thurles and Moycarkey, winning the last game with three fantastic goals from the sticks of Emer Quinlan, Keeley Halpin and Joye Arbuckle.
Many thanks to Thurles for their kind invitation and also to all the parents who made the journey with us.

NEWS & VIEWS
The website seems to be down, but hopefully it will be back in operation soon, and any notes that have not gone up on it will be saved and entered.

Keep your news and your views coming, please. The main topic of conversation this week has been the everlasting lights in the town - is this the only thing you talk about?
