CAHIR NOTES
ANNUAL HOSPICE MORNING
Karen Donovan has nominated Thursday 18th September for the very popular Hospice Morning at her Lazy Bean Café. From 9am until noon, visitors can have a cup of coffee (or tea), a scone and cake, having made a donation to the South Tipperary Hospice on the way in.
This event is outstanding in the calendar of such fundraisers. There is always a huge number of really good Raffle prizes, and visitors can spill over into the next door shop, so there is plenty of room to relax, chat and generally enjoy oneself - while basking in the fact that you are doing so for a great cause.
CAHIR PARK AFC SOCCER ACADEMY
The Academy is back after the summer break. This Saturday, 6th September, is Registration Day, being held between 10am and 12 noon. This is for all children between 6 and 10 years of age.
Normal training will begin on 13th, but there will still be an opportunity on 6th for those attending to have a kick-around whilst parents fill out their contact details.
If your child hasn’t played before, new children are welcome to come along and join in.
CONDOLENCES
Sincere sympathy is extended to Gerry Duffy and family of the Mitchelstown Road in Cahir, on the recent death of his brother Thomas at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, after a long illness.

ST. KIERAN’S AFC
St Kieran’s got their League campaign under way for the season on Sunday 21st August with a 1 - 1 draw against Glengoole in Duneske.
They went behind to an early Glengoole free kick, but equalised 20 minutes later through Ray Allen. It was his second goal in as many games.
The League continues next Sunday with an away game against Killusty.
GOLFI NG FOR SEAN
On ~Friday 4th July, friends and family of the late Sean Condon gathered at Cahir Park Golf Club for a Golf Classic. This was held in aid of the charity Melanoma Cancer Research.
The day was a huge success, with a major turnout. The organisers would like to thank all who competed, as well as all who gave very generously through sponsorship of Tee-Boxes, Donations and Spot Prizes.
The amount raised was €19,137.73.

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION COMMUNITY LOTTO
As there was no Jackpot winner last week, the total stands at €1,900 for this week’s draw. The numbers drawn last week were: 8, 13, 14 and 20 and the five Lucky Dip winners, who received €30 each, were: Eileen Quirk, Carrigeen; Kathleen Moloney, Castlegrace; Seamus Quirke, Ballingeary; Bernie O’Donnell, Ballyd rehid; Iam Buckley, Hillview Crescent - all in Cahir.
Tickets can be purchased up to noon on Wednesday from the Business & Training Centre. The profit from the Community Lotto services community projects in Cahir.
CAHIR YOUTH CLUB
Have you free time? Like working with young people? Due to the continued increase in numbers, the Club is looking for volunteers to help out on a rota basis (1 to 2 nights a month), with the Club, where there is a great atmosphere.
To find out more, come to their Junior/Club Leaders meeting on Wednesday 3rd September in the Community Hall at 8:30pm. All of 18 years or over are most welcome.
They were delighted to welcome the Minister for Children, Mr Barry Andrews, to view the new Youth Centre in Cahir (which is located behind the VEC building) recently. He was very impressed and pledged his continued support.
This project began with a hard-working local committee and it is a great achievement to see this now nearing completion. They wish to acknowledge the Grants and much assistance from the Drugs Task Force, South Tipperary County Council for obtaining the building from the VEC, Waterford Regional Youth Services and support from the people of the town.
This Centre will be of huge benefit to the young people in the town and will give them a safe and secure place to go to, which is so badly needed.

MAUREEN CALVERT’S PASSION FOR FASHION
It is amazing how much information from the Couture and Ready to Wear Shows can be garnered from the internet and the television nowadays. It makes life a lot easier, not just for fashionistas but for anyone with an interest on what is going on.
However, if you are someone who splashes out carefully, wanting to buy something good that will be wearable over a longish period, you still have decisions to make. One of the most dangerous fashions to follow is that for the “in” colour as, in a year, it will be seriously dated. But if it is a colour you have always loved and worn, why not go ahead anyway?
Red is the couleur du jour and my only regret is that it doesn’t look as good with grey hair as it did with my previous dark brown. However, it is everywhere, and gives a great lift to the winter ‘blues’. There was also a lot of wonderful Winter White and a huge palette of what some call ‘sludge’ colours – grey/beige/fawn/brown/moss and so on. Also the return of a lot of fur, but I think that this should be elbowed, as there is so much really good-looking faux fur around now. I still think the real thing looks better on its first owner.
There was lace in most of the collections, both Couture and Pret a Porter, along with a continuing, if not so strong an emphasis, on ruffles - these can easily be overdone, but in the right hands are so glamorous.
Skirt lengths and shapes are still all over the place, leaving choice wide open. One of the very best bits of news that I came across was the return of the flat shoe - albeit in a very glitzy guise. I first became aware of this trend last year, when I saw Jodie Kidd wearing a pair of flat Jimmy Choo sandals at Ascot. Mind you, at 6feet plus, she has an advantage.
At the Ladies Who Lunch event on Wednesday 10th September, in Dundrum House Hotel, I will be keeping an eye open for the way in which the Collections have transferred to the Boutiques. The organiser of Ladies Who Lunch, Jackie Mullins, has arranged a big fashion show to take place after the lovely Lunch and the Special Guest Speaker, who I think listeners will find enthralling.
The show itself draws on shops from Cahir - Klassy Lady and Sheehan’s; Thurles - Stakelums Ladies Fashion and Footsteps Shoes; Clonmel - Top Drawer Lingerie; Cashel - The Bridal Suite, Golden Threads, Scalazell Shoes; Tipp Town - Style Profile; Dundrum - Sierra Ladies Fashions; Mitchelstown - Mr Mister Menswear. And of course Teresa’s amazing hats, also from Cahir. The models’ hair will be styled by Claire’s Hair Studio, Dundrum.
There is an even longer list of Exhibitors who have taken stands, so there will be lots to look at - and buy! This year, I will take a bigger bag with me.
In association with Cystic Fibrosis South Tipp Branch, South Tipp Today and Tipp Mid-West Radio, this year’s Ladies Who Lunch aims to raise a goodly sum for Cystic Fibrosis suffers in the County, while providing a beautiful day for the ladies. Everything has been arranged to provide a relaxing and interesting occasion. The event runs from 11am to 5pm and the ticket price of €75 includes a superb lunch with wine. See you there.
Look out for Second Chance, the Charity Fashion Show, on 10th October in Cahir House Hotel. More next month.
WONDERFUL HAMPER WON
I got a last-minute phone call from the lady who won the truly wonderful hamper that was on offer at the Farmers’ Market at the weekend. However, I managed to leave my notes behind and am writing this from memory - !
She had never won anything like this before, with lovely edibles from every stall at the Market, and will be there this Saturday to say thank-you properly.
