CAHIR NOTES

URGENT APPEAL TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS
Cahir Youth Club has recommenced after the summer break. It is reported with great pleasure that a very large number of teenagers attended last week, which shows the need for a club which offers a safe, secure environment in which they can meet.

Because of the numbers attending, it is regretted that only a limited number can be enrolled, until new Leaders volunteer to help out. If you are interested, please ring 086 267 1646, or go down to the Community Hall on Wednesday night between 8:30 and 10pm.

CAHIR CHORAL PLANNING TO SING AWAY
What great news awaited me when I finally got back to Choral last week!. Two trips are being planned to Choir Festivals. The first will be next year in Nice for a 3-day visit in October that includes a tour of Monaco or St Paul de Vence, as well as singing a half-hour programme in the 17th century Sainte Réparate Cathedral; a choral evening singing with a local choir and an opportunity to lead the singing at a Mass.

In 2010 the Budapest Choir Festival takes place over three days in June. As the handout says, “The Budapest Festival is ideal for choirs who are looking for a more relaxed trip. The Festival includes two performances and offers plenty of opportunity to see the city”. The main performance will take place in the amazing Godollo Castle, which is the former summer residence of Queen Elisabeth.

However, to take part in these terrific jaunts, you need not only to ‘belong’ to Cahir Choral, but actually to sing with them on a regular basis. So will ‘old’ members please get with it. New members, of course, are always made very welcome. You don’t have to be able to read music, all that is needed is a love of singing. If you want to know more, do phone our Musical Director Maureen Ahern on 052 41508. If you have to leave a message on the answering machine, she really does reply as soon as possible.

The first outing of this season for Choral is to St Paul’s Church for the lovely Harvest Festival Service this coming Sunday, at 7:30pm.

GENEROUS CLUB
The Cahir Ladies’ Gaelic Football Club presented cheques to the Irish Hospice Foundation and the South Tipperary Hospice on Friday night 12th September at Cahir House Hotel.

This proved to be a very well attended and enjoyable evening and I had a good time. It was here that I was asked to organise a Fun Dog Show for next Sunday, to which I was very happy to be able to say yes.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES
As the sun shone down on Tipperary last Saturday morning, a convoy of cars left Cahir for New Inn in readiness to take on the challenge of the County U12 "B" Final. Our opposition was Thurles and from meeting this team on a few occasions over the year we knew that a tough challenge lay ahead.

With the manager Mary Howard and her selectors Jane O Gorman and Martin Halpin, the Cahir squad were out warming up in plenty of time for the 11am throw in. From the start it was tit for tat with Cahir in possession one minute and then Thurles robbing the sliothar back and a very enthusiastic crowd of supporters airing their vocal talents early in the game.

A break came in around the 8th minute of play when Roisin Howard broke away from her markers and put over a lovely point from play. Thurles had all their homework done and were doing their best to mark Roisin out of the game, with two players on her constantly. This did not deter the young fire-ball and shortly after, her point found the back of the Thurles goal.

Meanwhile, Thurles had put two points on the score board form frees and indeed were not going to hand the title to Cahir on a plate. Keely Halpin in goal was saving Cahir time and time again, her puck-outs were crippling Thurles as each one landed well into the half forward line, immediately putting their backs under pressure.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Ashling Moloney execute an accurate point from a free, but within seconds the Thurles forwards crowded out the goal mouth and in the ensuing melée, the sliothar found its way over the Cahir goal line and now both teams were level. The excitement on the line was fever pitch, with both sets of supporters urging their teams along with fine words of wisdom. The hurler on the ditch coming well into his own! A beautiful pass from Roisin Howard into corner forward Grainne Quirke, who struck the rolling ball on the run, went flying into the goal and had the Cahir supporters jumping out of their skins. But the referee shattered all our joy when he deemed it to be a square ball and disallowed the goal.

This gave Thurles great momentum and they battled out of their skins to get the sliothar up into our back lines. All the Cahir side at this stage were working their socks off to keep the opposition at bay, and four more frees awarded to Cahir were met with precision accuracy from Ashling Moloney. Even though when the Referees whistle sounded the end of the game we were four points ahead, the result could have gone any way with Thurles battling up to the final second. Indeed if they had taken their points instead of going for goals the result might have been very different.

As always, it takes a full panel of players, both team and substitutes, to win a County title and this indeed is very true for the Cahir team. Each Wednesday evening and some Saturday mornings these players turn up for training in all kinds of weather. Their commitment and hard work makes it difficult for the manager and selectors to put out the starting fifteen on the pitch and this in no way belittles the value of all our substitutes on the bench.

Cahir captain Clara O Donnell accepted the B County shield from County Board representative Berni Dowd  and duly thanked all her teamates and managers and indeed Thurles for such a sporting game. Special mention must be made to our center back Emma Buckley who played on Saturday even though she was mourning the loss of her beloved granny, Margaret, May She Rest in Peace.
U12 panel: Keely Halpin, Roisin Costigan, Carol Casey, Laura Casey, Alina Newmeritisky, Emma Buckley, Clara O' Donnell, Ashling Moloney, Ashling McCarthy, Aoife Corcoran, Roisin Howard, Rachel O' Dwyer, Eadaoin O Gorman, Roisin O Donnell, Grainne Quirke, Claire Kiely, Joye Arbuckle, Heather Lambert, Siobhan Lonergan, Niamh O Brien, Katie Farrell, Kirsty Arbuckle, Ciara Quinlan

BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Many Happy Returns to Michael Lescov, who was born on 19th September 2000, from Mum and John.

THE BISTRO OPENS
The new Bistro in Cahir House opened last Thursday, quite quietly, and I was in there like a shot, as I had been looking forward to seeing the changes and eating there for some time.

The owners have provided a lovely light and spacious space, uncluttered and inviting, and there are some nice pictures on the walls.

I am sure that many readers will remember David Walsh from The Bay Tree in Clonmel. Well, David is one of the owners of the Hotel now, and is managing the Bistro, so you know that a high standard of cooking and of service will be provided - and the chef from The Bay Tree is there too.

At lunch time there is the choice of main courses that is available in the Bar, as well as some delicious dishes provided only here. There is a wide choice of teas and coffees, lovely pastries and scones and charming waitresses to look after you.

Something that really impressed me is that there is a ramp as well as steps up to The Bistro - I can cope with going up a few stairs (just) but going down is literally a pain. And for wheelchairs and pushchairs, this is a real blessing. There is plenty of space when they get up there, too.

Well done, guys - you’ve done good!
