CAHIR NOTES

HALLOWE’EN CELEBRATIONS
I know that there is a lot of excitement in many homes as All Hallows Even looms up. Children, not all of them small, are preparing their costumes and planning their routes to doorsteps where they may be given goodies of all descriptions. It is also an opportunity for adults to have fancy dress parties and generally have a good time. (That commercial with wrinklies who are so delighted not to loose their teeth when bobbing for apples has rather put me off!)

However, it is also a time to think of our animals, many of whom are terrified by the fireworks (thought they were banned?). Some are so scared that they run blindly in any direction, if not kept in. The really kind thing to do is to sedate the ones who suffer the worst, so talk to your vet. If you are not taking any other precautions, do see that your dog has an identifying disc on its collar, or is micro-chipped, so that it can be returned to you when this scary night is over.

Of my two dogs, the lurcher is totally blasé about the loudest bangs, and “the fluffy one” is somewhat improved. As long as she is under the duvet, with her head under a pillow, she seems to think she will be OK. This is great progress. (My mother-in-law and her dog used to hide in the cupboard under the stairs).

Pat Crotty and friends will be selling tickets in the hallway of SuperValu on Friday 31st October and Saturday 1st November, in aid of Cottage Animal Rescue, which is based at Longfields, in Cashel. To win a lovely hamper, the tickets cost €2, or 3 for €5. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Every cent raised by Pat and friends will go to ease the suffering of the many abused and abandoned animals. Every animal rescue is full to capacity and I join with Pat  in encouraging people to think very seriously before deciding to get a puppy, as there is so much work involved with them.

YOGA CLASSES
Drop-in classes for all are starting again this Wednesday, 29th October at 11am at the Duneske Leisure Centre. All ages are welcome, and you pay as you go.  For further information, please contact Mary on 086 359 3024.

Maureen Calvert’s PASSION FOR FASHION

When I wrote the first “Passion for Fashion”, last year, I declared my support for Charity Shops, wherever they are. At home in Canada they are called Thrift Shops, which sends a much clearer message, I think, particularly in these worrying days.

With recycling very much to the fore, this is yet one more very good reason to send good quality used clothes to these shops, and to buy from them.

To encourage people to do this, I decided to organize a Charity Fashion Show, presenting clothes from the two Charity Shops in Cahir - Mrs. Quinn’s (NCBI) and St Vincent de Paul. This took place on 10th October in Cahir House Hotel, with models trained by me".

This is another small project begun last year - training people who would like to model at charity fashion shows. Quite a few I have seen here over the years have obviously had no guidance at all. Some of the young women who contacted me could quite possibly have a future in the business, but for the most part, they want to do something for charity, and to make a good job of it. “Maureen’s Models” range from age 11 to the 50s, from an adult size 6 to size 18, and there are some lovely young children coming on too.

At the recent show, I was struck by the ease with which slightly out-dated clothes, of very good quality, could be brought up to the minute. One Paul Costelloe suit simply needed a belt! The jacket was a bit long, which dated it, and the belt made all the difference because, as well as changing the outline; these are very much of the moment. It sold on the night.

The Chanel look too is a trifle passé, and to make these garments appear more noughties it was simply necessary to leave the top two or three buttons open - see the picture of the pink coat. There were a couple of jackets in this style that looked amazing over an LBD, and would also be great with jeans, if worn with a longer sweater, for instance, for the layered look that is a perennial.

The three photographs shown here are by Brian Guidera, who obviously could have a future as a fashion photographer. They are all of “my” models, wearing clothes from the recent show, and were taken in and around Cahir House Hotel.

So don’t feel shy - have a look at what is available at your local charity shops - I know you will be amazed. Use your imagination while looking - really great accessories (like Teresa’s hat, worn with the red outfit) can make an outfit. Unfortunately, the equally amazing shoes can’t be seen - have a look in Interior Concepts / Shoe Heaven, in Cahir - they were red and black, with killer heels.

Next month I will be writing about the party clothes that are available in South Tipp. So I will be forced to visit every fashion shop that I know of - it’s a tough life, isn’t it?

The Jackpot total has now reached €3,100 for this week’s draw, that takes place on Wednesday at noon. Tickets can be bought from the Business & Training Centre up to the last minute.

May O’Brien witnessed last week’s draw, and with no Jackpot winner for numbers 5, 8, 15 and 18, the 5 Lucky Dip winners, each of whom has received €30, were: Willie Houlihan, C’o Moloney’s, Poulmucka; Shane Molloy, C/o The Punters’ Rest; Margaret Sheehy, Townspark; Jean Rogers, Upper Cahir Abbey; John Walsh, Carrigeen.

The profit from the Community Lotto goes towards servicing community projects in Cahir.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB
The AGM of the Club will take place on Wednesday 5th November in the GAA Club House at 8:30pm. All are welcome, and it is hoped to see a good response from parents and their friends in camogie, as the plans for the year ahead are set out.

Thanks are expressed to all who supported draw for Bertie’s Dilemma in aid of GAA funds. As you all know, the Field Day was cancelled, but the Draw was held during the GAA Table Quiz last week, with the winning ticket going to James English of Garryroan.

KIDS’ HALLOWE’EN DISCO
Our Lady of Mercy PS Parents’ Council wish to remind all would-be witches and wizards of the Hallowe’en Disco in Cahir House Hotel next Friday, 31st October from 6 - 7pm.

All Primary School children welcome and any children under school-going age, who must be accompanied by a parent / minder (over 26). The organisers would be delighted to see any parents who can spare the time to stay and help out. All the children must be dropped off to and collected from the hall.

Admission is €5 and there will be a little shop inside. I am looking forward to seeing all the fantastic costumes, with lots of spot prizes to be won during the evening.

ROSEMOUNT RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
The Association is having its next meeting in the Shamrock Lounge on Wednesday 29th October at 8pm.  By now all residents will have received their Newsletter and should be up-to-date on what is going on in the area.

The Committee wishes to send a big thank-you to Shane Ryan for the hard work he put into fixing the paving in Rosemount Avenue. Shane spent all of last Saturday fixing up the mess that was caused by some thoughtless vandals. Once again, we are saying “Zero tolerance” to littering and vandalism.

Also, here is a reminder that the mini clean-up is to take place this Thursday, 30th, meeting in Rosemount Avenue at 7pm.

CAHIR & DISTRICT LADIES’ CLUB
The ladies will be meeting again in the Hall on Monday 3rd November at 9pm. Some of them have just finished a Beauty Course run by Peggy Gantly. They were all made more beautiful and had lovely nails and massages done. The Course flew by as they all had such fun and they wish to thank Peggy, and Tricia Brunnick for organising it. It was very successful and enjoyed by all. Peggy is wished all the best for her new baby,  is due in January.

THE HILL BAR
There is a Fancy Dress Party in the Hill Bar on Saturday 1st November. There will be Karaoke by Pablo and Cocktails. Also there will be a prize for the Best Dressed partygoer. Sounds like fun to me.

POULMUCKA PLOUGHING ASSOCIATION
The Association is holding its Annual Ploughing Match on Sunday 2nd November on the lands of Thomas Prendergast, on the New Inn / Golden road, by kind permission. The usual competitions will be run under NPA Rules, starting at 12 o’clock sharp. A large number of ploughmen is expected, so fine weather would be very welcome.

The National Chairman, Eddie Hally, and John Casey attended the European Ploughing Championships in Denmark recently. Ireland had 2 competitors from Cork and Wexford, who came 4th in their classes. Well done to them both.

CAHIR COUNTRY MARKET
It’s always a pleasure to call in to the Market on a Friday morning. The first thing I do is get a lovely cup of tea (and a home baked cake too, if I’m honest) before wandering aqround the beautifully displayed tables, filled with all sorts of wonderful homemade, handmade and home-grown produce.

This week I chatted to Deputy Mattie McGrath, who always makes time to visit the Market, before I did my usual shopping. I’m continually amazed at the range of produce available there. So many new things are available, from Honey, Beeswax Polish; Candles; Scarves and Gloves to all the delicious homemade cakes, pies, buns, preserves, organic eggs. I must also mention the fantastic fresh flowers and of course the lovely home-grown fruit and fresh vegetables. Franchesca has returned with her Handmade Greetings Cards and also a beautiful selection of Handmade Jewellery. Either can be made to order. And she has added another string to her bow, having produced some lovely Cahir Calendars with photographs that she has taken herself.

HALLOWEE’N GIG FOR FAIR EXCHANCE
Don’t forget that Fair Exchange is playing a 70s and 80s gig on Hallowe’en Night in Cahir House Hotel, to raise much needed funds for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. This will be followed by a Disco by DJ Derek. This is the last gig that Patsy Cunningham is organising for Cahir until well after Christmas.  So don’t meet him in the street and say ‘there’s nothing to do around Cahir’. Here is a great night, with a great band and DJ - AND ALL FOR ONLY €10 for a great cause.

KNOCKGRAFFON CARDS
Last week’s winners were Paddy Meaney / Niall Walsh and Renee O’Connor / Timmy Fitzgerald. Please note that the new starting time is 8:30pm sharp. All are welcome.

BALLINGEARY ICA
The next meeting of this group will be held on Wednesday 5th November at 8pm. The venue for this month will be the Parish Rooms beside the Day Care Centre, in St Mary’s Road. The speaker will by Hilary Tarrant.  There will also be a speaker from Community Alert.

The Hostesses for November are Peggy Grufferty, Lisa Doyle, Chrissie Casey and Jenny Kiely.

Just to remind members of the Ploughing Championships in New Inn on Sunday 3rd November.

All are welcome at their meetings.

CAHIR & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB
This active body, in association with Goldstar Entertainment, present a Murder Mystery Dinner “A Faith Worse than Death” at Cahir House Hotel on Saturday 219th November at 8pm sharp. The price of €35 includes a 3-course dinner as well as the play.  Book if you dare!

Tickets and booking at the Hotel - 052 42727. For additional information please contact 087 223 6583.

CONGRATULATIONS BERNIE
I love the new premises that Bernie O’Brien has found for his New Age Photography. The windows are full of lovely photographs, and I actually like his landscapes best of all, some of which, taken in the area, are quite gob-smackingly good.

CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
The next meeting to take place will be the Association’s AGM, which will be held in the Catherine McAuly Room on Wednesday 5th November at 2:20 prompt. The first item on the agenda will be the election of Officers to the Committee. After the meeting, they will enjoy tea and biscuits provided by the dedicated and cheerful members.

The Christmas Party will be held in Cahir House Hotel again, on Wednesday 10th December at 2pm. Tickets are available, and all are welcome.

The results of the Progressive 25 cards for Friday 24th October are: First, with 12 games - Rupery Guiry, Ted Dillon. Joint Second with 10 games, Bob Condon and Paddy Halloran, Dave White, Willie O’Neil.  The Lucky Table: Margaret Quinland, Michael Phelan, Willie O’Donnell, Mary Whelan. The Raffle was won by Tom O’Mahoney, Mary Whelan.
