CAHIR NOTES
WHAT’S ON AT THE COLAISTE?
Boys’ Basketball. The basketball season began for the Cahir boys on Thursday2nd October when the under-19 team travelled to Tipperary Town to meet the Abbey CBS.
The game got off to a good start in the Cannon Hayes Complex, with the starting five of Cian Duggan, Felix Finke, Jim Costigan, Padraig Lonergan and Shane Murphy holding their own. The Cahir boys were leading all the way, right up until the last minute of the third quarter. The continued to fight hard right up to the final whistle, but unfortunately it was not to be their day. Injuries meant that Brian Costigan and Eric Rees were ruled out of play and they were sorely missed.
On Thursday 9th October, both the under-16 and under-19 teams travelled to Rockwell. Up first were the under-16s who displayed good skill and were unlucky not to win. They were followed by the under 19s, who again had the lead for the first three quarters but, unfortunately, the final quarter did not go their way and they were beaten. Both teams were disappointed, but are hoping for better outcomes in their next matches.
Fashion Show. The show being put on at the Colaiste on 6th November has clothes from: Sheehan’s, McMahon’s Shoes, Moran’s Mini & Mom, Golden Threads, Stakelums, Interior Concepts, Kilkenny Design Shop, Irene’s, Jean Junction, Cinderella, Minnie Mee, Mr Mister, Ryan Design, OC Clothing, Sienna, Teresa’s Hat Hire. That’s quite a line-up.
Tickets are available from Colaiste Dun Iascaigh and Spar, The Square, Cahir. Light refreshments will be served on the night.
NEW EXHIBITION AT THE CRAFT GRANARY
This photographic exhibition will display various lighting effects on the local landscape and around the Waterford coast. It is on in the Craft Granary from 28th October to 17th November.
FUN AT THE MARKET
There is going to be lots of fun this Bank Holiday weekend at the Farmers’ Market. The Cookie Jar proprietor Cate is, once again, kindly sponsoring free Hallowe’en shaped cookies for children to decorate with icing and treats and then to enjoy.
While doing this, they can also have fun with a colouring competition and get their faces painted with the wonderful Tina.
Also on Saturday, pick up your entry form and free cooking apples for the Apple Tart Competition, which will take place the following Saturday, kindly sponsored by Con Traas of The Apple Farm. This competition was a great success last year, and if you feel your baking skills are up to scratch, then why not pick up an entry form this Saturday.
Have a listen to Tipp FM on Saturday morning, to the “Morning Coffee” programme, for a chance to win a Market Hamper, packed with sample goodies of what is on offer. The full compliment of stalls will be there this Saturday, selling everything from fresh fesh, organic meats, confectionary, eggs, flowers, cheeses, bread, vegetables and juices, toname a small amount of what is available weekly.
MISSING KEYS
Actually, it seems to be one key on a ring with the Eiffel Tower, a dog’s head and one or two other bits and pieces, including a memory stick. If anyone has come across these, could you please drop them in to the Business & Training Centre?
And I personally have lost an orange umbrella with GFK on it. As far as I know, there is only one other like it in this area. I would LOVE to have it back.

The roundest knight at King Arthur’s round table was Sir Cumference. He acquired his size from too much pi.
I thought I saw an eye doctor on an Alaskan Island, but it turned out to be an optical Aleutian.
No matter how much you push the envelope, it’ll still be stationery.
TRICK OR TREAT?
No tricks here! This is a real treat from Cahir Bingo. Here’s €500 up for grabs on the Quickies this week. Each Quickie Raffle Ticket costs €1 and Strips of 6 cost €5. One winner guaranteed.
A Lucky Number game has been introduced. This went down well and gives even more chances to win. Bingo is a fun evening, a chance to make new friends, play the game and, maybe, win some money. Why not go along and try it out?
CRUMLIN CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Patsy Cunningham is still at it - here is his latest:
“Local band Fair Exchange will play a Monster Gig in Cahir House Hotel on Hallowe’en Night, Friday 31st October.
“This band gets back together every once in a while to raise money for charity. Over the years they have raised lots by performing gigs or writing a song and releasing it to the public. Every member of the group is an accomplished musician, some stretching back thirty years. They play all the classics, note for note, and some say they play them better than the originals.
“They were the first band to offer to play a gig for me and for the Hospital, so I for one can’t wait for this gig. A Disco will follow, and thanks to Derek Roche for offering to DJ. It will be all 70s and 80s music and it promises to be a fabulous night’s entertainment. Fancy Dress is optional and welcome, with a prize for the best costume.
“So come and have some fun and a dance. Watch and listen to some great music, help raise money for Crumlin and support these friendly, helpful entertainers. Admission is €10.
“Anyone interested in seeing photos of our recent trip to Route 66, will find them up on the net at http://picasweb.googlie.com/anne.patsy.”
PILATES @ CAHIR HOUSE

CONGRATULATIONS
Maria Taylor would like to take this opportunity to wish Majella and Frankie Walsh all the very best for the future. They were married on Friday 17th October.
“I would like to say what a lovely wedding it was too. It was held in a fantastic marquee beside the Ballykisteen Hotel and Golf Resort, just past Tipperary Town. Majella looked stunning and everything was beautiful - the food, the music, the service, the rooms and the hotel itself.
“Lastly, I must say that Majella and Frankie are two lovely people with two really nice, down-to-earth families, and everybody had a great time. Thank you both for a really lovely day, with best wishes from Maria and Martyn Taylor.”

ST KIERAN’S F.C.
St Kieran’s were beaten 1 - 0 in the 2nd Division Shield Semi-Final on Sunday. They were playing against Clonmel Celtic B. In a tight and hard-fought game, the result did not reflect the play. St Kieran’s came into this game after losing their last two games, but you would not have thought this, as they started the stronger team and were on top for most of the game.
With 20 minutes remaining, Celtic got a lucky break to go one up. St Kieran’s battled hard and had several chances, but their finished in front of goal was found to be lacking. However, the team can take some positives from the day, as their performance has greatly improved in the last two weeks.
KNOCKGRAFFON CARDS
The winners from two weeks ago in the Progressive 25 Drive were Renee O’Connor / Timmy Fitzgerald and Mary T Loughnan / Paddy Lonergan.
Last week’s winners were Angela Barret / Kitty Byrne and Jimmy Looby / Michael Murphy. A great night was had by all, with tea and sandwiches afterwards. Please note that there will be a €10 game once a month, on the first Wednesday of each month. All are welcome.
CASHEL AMNESTY
This active group is holding their Annual Table Quiz in The Brian Boru, Main Street, Cashel at 9pm on Thursday 30th October - €24 per table of four. I will put a reminder in next week.
CAHIR FLOWER & GARDEN CLUB
The monthly meeting of this organisation will be held on Wednesday 29th October at 8pm in the Catherine McAuley Room.
Demonstrations will be by their local demonstrators Mary and Mairead. All are welcome.
CAHIR DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION COMMUNITY LOTTO
The Jackpot now stands as €2,950 for this week’s Draw. The numbers that came up last week were: 3, 5, 13 and 15. The five Lucky Dip winners, each of whom received €30, were: Claire Hally, Loughloher; Colleen Maher, c/o Shamrock Lounge; Michelle Doherty, Knockgraffon; Joanne O’Brien, Cahir Abbey Upper; John & Caroline Duggan, Avondale Court, all in Cahir.
The profit from the Community Lotto services community projects in Cahir.
TELEVISED CHURCH SERVICES
For those who are unable to attend Mass, I am including the link to daily church services broadcasted on the Net in Ireland (R.C.) There is a timetable at the left of the page: www.churchservices.tv/index.php.
“SUICIDE IN THE NEW IRELAND”
This is the topic of the next Open Meeting of Cahir Development, which will take place in Cahir House Hotel on Friday 14th November.
The Chairperson for the evening will be Senator Mary White, who has released a White Paper on the subject. There will also be a psychiatrist speaking and one or two others, including someone from the Southern Regional Suicide Awareness Group.
This Open Meeting is being held at this time, just before Christmas, which can prove very difficult for some people.
TABLE QUIZ FOR REHAB
The quiz held at Cahir House last week was great fun, possibly because it was very difficult (questions by the sponsors, Powers Whiskey), and also because noone was taking it too seriously. The sound system in the bar is really good. Speaking for myself, I was amazed when our team won - by just one point, mind you. Finbar’s gang were next.
The Management (who provided tasty nibbles) are considering holding quizzes regularly, which would be fun.

Triumphant Winners of the recent pub quiz were Janette Kennedy, Darragh Wycherly, Eleanor Morrissey and myself
DENTAL PRACTICE IN CAHIR
I keep forgetting to say that there IS a dental practice in Cahir. The entrance is next door to Galileo - opposite the side of the P.O. Myself and all my family are patients there, and two of us were terrified of dentists - but not any more. And he accepts Medical Cards. What more can you ask? The practice has been in existence for four years, and people are still saying that they didn’t know.
READERS’ NEWS & VIEWS
As always, I look forward to hearing what’s going on and your viewpoints. I had a response to the piece about a tree being cut down in Beech Park which I must follow up - but I will certainly NOT do anything about anonymous messages in future. I can be contacted at 10 Market Yard / 086 840 5020 or at the e-mail address above.
