CAHIR NOTES
SUCCESSFUL CDA OPEN MEETING
Last Friday night Cahir Development held an Open Meeting in Cahir House Hotel, highlighting “Suicide in the New Ireland”. As Chairman of Cahir Development, Cllr Andy Moloney introduced Senator Mary White, who chaired the meeting.
Dr Carmel McAuliff addressed the areas of Self Harm, Warning Signs and Prevention. Dr McAuliff, who works for the National Suicide Research Foundation, said that this year’s toll is expected to be around 600. On top of this figure there will be around 8,500 cases of self harm reported.
The most frequent cases are between the ages of 20 and 24 where males outnumber females 7 to 1. The highest number of females committing suicide do so between the ages of 50 and 54.
Dr McAuliff also stated that doctors need to be trained better in awareness of the problem and that while it will never be totally eradicated, as the problem has been there since the beginning of time, the topic needs to be brought out into the open and talked about more often.
Ex Tipp hurler and Addiction Councillor John Leady spoke about Addiction and Substance abuse and how these too can lead to depression and eventual suicide. He talked of his own experiences and how we need to tell people that there is help available for all kinds of addiction.
Speaking of his experiences as a Councillor and then a TD, Deputy Mattie McGrath pointed out that public representatives are the people on the ground, who call on isolated people and could be the first to see symptoms. He realises that it is not just families that are left bereaved, but often whole communities are left devastated by the suicide of a family member or a friend.
The Deputy also touched briefly on a relatively new form of bullying, in the form of phone text messaging, which often leads to depression, and how the authorities are trying to deal with it.
Senator Mary White emphasised the need for Counsellors and for the HSE to provide more funding for them.
As a member of the medical profession, Senator Phil Prendergast offered her support on the matter. She also commended all the Guest Speakers on their very sensitive coverage of a very sensitive subject.
Should you need more information you can contact www.nsrf.ie or Ann Marie Lawlor, who can provide information on training project ideas, support services, mental health promotion and suicide prevention in your area. She can be contacted on 051 874 013 (HSE).
Lastly, if you feel you need help or that someone you know needs help, you can consult your GP or Caredoc out of hours; go to A&E for emergency physical or psychological trauma; and you can call the Samaritans any time on 1850 609 090.
WHAT’S ON AT DUNESKE?
The news that Duneske now has two new Vibrostations came as a welcome surprise, as these machines are much talked about on the Gym Scene. Vibrostations use a Whole Body Vibration (WBV) technique which, when used as a training method, has been shown to increase bone density, muscle strength and flexibility in a remarkably short time. Ten minutes with this system is the equivalent of 60 minutes of weightlifting. Standing on a vibrating plate, every cell in your body vibrates at the same speed as the plate - 30 to 50 times a second.
The benefits of using the Vibrostation include rapid muscle increase, increased fat burning, increased flexibility, activation of the circulation, improvement of coordination and has also been shown to benefit older people. [This older person used this method a few years ago, when there was one available in Cahir, and it did everything it says on the tin. I am delighted it is back in town. MC]
All the other features of Duneske are available, and for further information on any of them, and on pricing, please call in or contact Jackie Guthrie on 052 45517.
Duneske has said a fond farewell to Ann Kinsella, Caroline Hoare and Majella Sullivan, who all served as Receptionists for the last 2-3 years. Their funding in Duneske is finished, and they are wished all the best for the future. Welcome to James Brenna, the new Gym Instructor and Marie, Cashia and Edith to the Reception. Lastly best wishes for the future to Jackie Sullivan, who is on Maternity Leave.
