CAHIR NOTES 29TH JULY

LAUNCH OF VISITORS GUIDE

Last Thursday evening (23rd July) saw the launch of the new “Visitors Guide” to Cahir an informational booklet designed to give the very best of information to those visiting Cahir and wishing to avail of its many facilities. The booklet was produced by “The Promoting Cahir Group” with support from South Tipperary Development Company, The Department of Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and the EU. There is also a very detailed website, the address is www.visitcahir.ie. Chairman Patrick O’Donovan gave an interesting and informative talk and thanked several people that in his words “without whom this Guide would not have been completed.” Helen Shanahan, Project Coordinator, Brendan Davis, Liam Roche, Darren Ward for the webpage, Dr. David Butler, Editor, Kevin Rowe and Paul Burke of Cahir Anglers Club, Peig Butler and Denis Fahy Committee Representatives, Jason and Jennifer of the River House for hosting the Launch, Baylough Cheese, South Tipperary Development Company, and Tim Shanahan for his help with the funding applications. If anyone has been left out, apologies, they will be thanked next week.

Gary Breen, General Manager of Failte Ireland South East Tourism was also present for the occasion and spoke well on the efforts of “The Promoting Cahir Group” in producing “The Visitors Giude” and stated that he feels it is “a wonderful reflection of what is in the area.” Mentioning that Cahir has recently been awarded the “Centre of Excellence for Brown Trout Fishing” and that although this is a big plus for the area, it is not all about angling. He spoke of the National Agenda of Failte Ireland South East Tourism and of the Pilot Projects that have been so successful around the country through ways to bring foreign visitors to all areas, generating more business in these areas, especially through promotion and Brochure representation. He commended the Committee on this huge collaborative effort and wished them all the best for the future. He then officially launched the “Visitors Guide”. The evening was very well attended and with a tasty cheese and wine reception the evening turned out to be most enjoyable. Well done to all involved.

FUNDAY SUNDAY

Just a reminder to all local Groups, Clubs, Associations etc., that this is the chance for you to get involved in providing an activity or an entertainment(no matter how small) on the day and while doing so perhaps raise a few euro for your group/club. If each group could organise just one activity each then that would still make for a fabulous day. There are some fantastic groups out there that could do this and that have the manpower too. The new date for the Funday has been set for 30th August, so as to give everyone a chance to plan their activity/entertainment, even though some groups/ clubs have broken up for the summer, still it may be very worthwhile to get together for this. There will have to be a deadline as we will have to meet and discuss what is planned and also to organise insurance for the event. The deadline for this is 7th August. So call the Enterprise Centre anytime on 052 7442616 or even drop in and leave the name of your Club/Group/Association and we will call you back to confirm.

THE WHOLE WAY ROUND

The Whole Way round is a motorbike trip organised by staff at Crumlin Childrens Hospital. It's a 4 day event taking in as much scenery as possible and covering about 1000 miles in total. This year’s trip took 80 bikers plus 20 pillions, from Naas to Clonakilty in west Cork on day one. They passed through Cahir, Clogheen, the Vee, Lismore and also had a stopover in Clonakilty. Day 2 headed to Kerry taking in the ring of Kerry, Glengariff, and a stopover in the Glen eagle in Killarney. Day 3 headed to Connor pass, then onto the Tarbert ferry and off in Killimer and then through Limerick and on to Tipperary for our final stop over in Ballykisteen hotel. This hotel is great and the staff brilliant, by far the best hotel we visited. Day four they went up over the Glen of Aherlow onto Cashel and on up to Dublin to a warm and emotional welcome from children and staff and parents. Raising over €100,000 is a good feeling, travelling the roads of Ireland, with the best of people is great, seeing the smile on the children’s faces as we parade 80 bikes past the front door of the Hospital is priceless. Safety is the priority and lots of help is at hand from Gardai and all the marshals are highly trained. So, if you have a bike in your garage collecting dust, and want to be a part of these challenges, in complete safety, why not get in touch and be ready for next year, it will improve your driving skills, it will get your bike out on the road and raise much needed funds for Crumlin also and once you start you can't stop, nor would you want to. Contact CMRF for more info. There are also some great friendships forged and a lot of bonding goes on after many hours on the road together. Pat Cunningham Cahir. You can contact Pat on 086 151 853.for more information.

Tasks in the Kitchen Garden for August
Regularly pick small and tender courgettes, carefully cutting them off at the base with a sharp knife. Wear gloves if your hands are particularly sensitive to their prickly leaves and stalks. Many other crops will also have a better flavour if harvested when still quite small. Soft fruit, Pick the last raspberries, and then prune the stems of summer varieties down to soil level. Tie in new shoots, about 10cm to 15cm (4in to 6in) apart, and remove excess ones. Prune back the main shoots and side shoots of gooseberries to five leaves to encourage them to produce fruiting shoots for next season. Peg down strawberry runners from new plants into the soil or pots of compost to root. Shear off the foliage just above the crown of each plant and clear away any debris. Transplant crops, transplant young winter vegetable crops from their seed-bed when their stalks are about the thickness of a pencil. Crops to sow, the following vegetable crops can be sown now directly outside: lettuce, Chinese cabbage, spring cabbage, endive, kohl rabi, radish, winter spinach and turnips for their green tops. Potatoes, Hot and humid conditions can encourage a rapid spread of potato blight, so you could consider spraying the crops with a chemical fungicide to prevent an attack. Extra water given to potatoes can also boost yields

MEETING TAKES PLACE REGARDING ENCAMPMENTSON THE  M8 – McGrath

South Tipperary TD, Mattie McGrath, in a statement today has again criticised NRA Officials and former County Council Roads Officials regarding the vast amount’s of waste land that was left behind after the construction of the new M8 in the Clonmore/Tourmore/Burncourt Cross area’s. Deputy McGrath would like to acknowledge and thank South Tipperary County Council Officials and the Gardai along with locals who met with him on location on Tuesday 21st to discuss this ongoing issue.

After the meeting Deputy McGrath said, “The vast amount of land which was left each side of the New M8 Motorway continues to be totally accessible to transient traders and I have been continuously highlighting this as totally unacceptable. There are now up to 5 encampments of Transient Traders in the Clonmore/Tourmore/Burncourt Cross areas with up to 22 to 30 caravans, not to mention cars, jeeps, and vans at these locations. It is totally outrageous that Farmers, Land Owners and families are been intimidated and blocked from using and accessing their land and their rights of way. I am calling on the County Council to move the road side boundary fence out to the road to prevent encampments from locating in these areas and possibly return the land to the farmers that were CPOed, some of whom have not yet been paid,” concluded Deputy McGrath.

This will be great for the ladies that have been working in the old shop, as they will have plenty of storage space and also more shop space. As there will be some packing and arranging to do in both shops the shop on Barrack Street will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday (28th and 29th July) with the new shop opening on Abbey Street the following day. Good luck to all, I will be popping in for a visit.

4 THINGS YOU PROBABLY NEVER KNEW YOUR MOBILE PHONE COULD DO

Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keyless entry? Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. This saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.
Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the boot).
Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a mobile phone! Have you locked your keys in the car?

Good to Know -ATM - PIN Number Reversal
If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN number in reverse. For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine. The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location.
This information was recently broadcast on CTV by Crime Stoppers however it is seldom used because people just don't know about it. Please pass this along to everyone.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES

The U12 Team had another great win on Thursday night last when we travelled to Drum in North Tipp to take on the home team. Again Cahir proved much too strong for the opposition and came away convincing winners. It was great to see all the younger players on the panel getting a game and great to see how the team in general is improving with each match. Training continues each Wednesday evening from 7pm and even last week with heavy showers being the order of the day, this did not deter the committed players and trainers of the club turning up, with special mention going out to Fiona McEniry, Meabh Casey, Jessica O' Dwyer, Rosanna Kiely and Kayleigh Flannery (U8) who were out learning the early skills of camogie from Jennifer and Deirdre. Well done also to our Chairman Martin and past Chairman Billy who took up the mantle of Umpires for referee Martin Browne in a County minor game between Wexford and Limerick in the GAA field on Sunday morning last.

VANDALS BREAK WINDOW.

I received a call while I was writing my notes, to inform me of yet another senseless act of vandalism. This time a window was broken when a stone was thrown through the window of the Presbyterian Church on Abbey Street. The gardai have been informed and are dealing with the situation. Hopefully they will catch whoever did this and our wonderful old buildings will be left alone. This is a beautiful old church that was completed in 1834 as the Meeting House for the Society of Friends (Quakers) and deserves to be preserved and protected.
