CAHIR NOTES 1st APRIL
HERITAGE ACTION MOLONEY
Cllr Andy Maloney said that the Heritage Plan information meeting was an eye-opener to the people of the Cahir LEA. He made his comments following last week’s meeting, where details of the 2004-2008 plan were presented and details of what grants had been drawn down by other areas during that period.
Cllr Moloney said that he was amazed to see Cashel and Fethard receive over €300,000 in grant aid for being Walled Towns, and in the same period not one cent came in the Cahir direction for any heritage development. He said that Heritage Officer was being more than helpful in returning to Cahir to talk to local groups and that everyone present could see that representation on their behalf had not happened during the last plan.
Cllr Moloney begs the question of why we were not included and has made moves to insure that we will have our say in the current plan. He said that submissions are being accepted up until Friday 1st May 09 for the new plan that will run from 2010-2014. Fill out your submission form, which can be downloaded on www.southtippheritage.ie or by contacting Cllr Andy Moloney on 086-3609110 and have your say.
CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES
With the arrival of summer time this week, we are back out door training for all levels on Wednesday evenings at Duneske from 7pm to 8pm. The club would like to take this opportunity to thank sincerely Mrs. Finnigan Burke, school principal and care taker Paddy Lonergan of Colaiste Dun Iascaigh for allowing us use of the indoor facilities over the winter months where our younger members really benefited from the extra training, that could not take place without the use of this premises. A special thank you to two members of our U16 Panel, Aoife Burke and Aoife O Gorman who refereed most games over the months and indeed all who helped out in any way.
The Camogie County Board has asked all clubs in Tipperary to help with ongoing fundraising which should see the final touches being added to our County field at the Ragg. With this in mind, each club has been asked to sell tickets for a race night, which will be held in Thurles, on April 17th next. The tickets are € 50 each and what we propose is that tickets would be bought by syndicates rather than individuals being asked to buy them outright. We would hope that maybe 5 people would come together thus contributing €10 each to buy a ticket. We understand that in these times it is difficult to be asking for money but the County grounds need to be finished and in the long run it would save us from having to make longer journeys to county fixtures if the pitch was open for play again. Your support will be genuinely appreciated.

DOG LITTER, AGAIN
I have received yet another complaint from concerned residents, about the ongoing problem of dog litter in their estate. It seems that people let their dogs loose in the car park behind Cahir House Hotel, where the dogs do their business either in resident’s gardens or on the path adjoining the houses. The residents feel very strongly about these dogs and their owners and also the fact that they have to clean up the litter left on their lawns by these unwelcome visitors.
They also have concerns from a Health and Safety point of view, that children cannot play in the gardens any longer as they don’t want them coming in contact with dog litter.
Perhaps dog owners could leave their pets on a lead until they reach the actual path that leads to the Swiss Cottage and again keep them under control when they are near people's houses and gardens or else use a Pooper scooper.
I don’t blame them, it is awful and also an offence, punishable by a hefty fine.

Here’s a gardening tip I came across lately, that I found both interesting and helpful.
You couldn't do better than to plant a wildlife hedge of trees. Either for decoration,or keeping in livestock. If the latter, then Hawthorn, Holly, a Prunus here and there, like sloes, bird cherry, and Gean (wild Cherry) Oak, Sycamore, Ash, Chestnut. Make your basic hedge with the Hawthorn and use the others dotted in along the length to give a bit height and character. Put in a hazel or two and a few dog roses as well. If it's just decorative, as you would find in an avenue, then you could use many of the same species but placed further apart so they grow as trees rather than hedge.
Thanks for the gardening tips Ted.

TIOBAR IOSA
Cllr. Seanie Lonergan, acting on complaints from Cahir residents, was horrified to see that vandals had damaged part of the Holy Well, just off the Tipperary Road. This mindless vandalism cannot be tolerated says the Councillor. He has reported the matter to the Gardai .The Cllr. has put the wheels in motion to the Heritage Officer, to avail of a grant for the restoration of this Holy Well .People use this well all the time stemming from the 9th century and was used during famine times for celebrating Mass. He appeals to nearby residents to be vigilant and keep a close watch on this heritage site .Cllr. Seanie says that the Gardai should be contacted if anyone sees anything suspicious around the area.

The first lecture for new members doing the Ocean Divers course, took place in the Hill Bar.( By kind permission) Pool training will commence in the next few weeks.
On St.Patricks Day CDC took part in the Cahir Parade. Much fun was had by members’ children on the boat, with all showing off their great water pistol skills. Pictures of CDC in the Parade along with pictures of the recent diving holiday to Malta can be seen on www.cahirdiveclub.com.

STATEMENT BY, JOHN O’DONNELL, FINE GAEL LOCAL ELECTION CANDIDATE
FOR CAHIR ELECTORAL AREA
JOHN O’DONNELL TO MAKE SUBMISSION TO THE COUNTY HERITAGE PLAN
After attending last Wednesday night’s Cahir Area consultation meeting on the South Tipperary Heritage Plan, John O’Donnell had the following comments to make:
“It was encouraging to hear the County Heritage Officer, Labhaoise McKenna, say that this was the best attended Consultation Meeting held to date. After all, it is vital for every community to protect and remember their own heritage. Local awareness, promotion and development of this heritage can provide a solid foundation for Tourism. Re-energising this sector will be one of my priorities if I am elected as a County Councillor.
Resources may not be as plentiful as before but there is still so much that can be done for the preservation and promotion of our heritage. In recent years, the Cahir area has not benefited as much as other areas from heritage funding. May 1st is the deadline for submissions to the Heritage Officer on this new Plan.
I will be making my own submission and would welcome suggestions or ideas from anyone who would like to contribute to this consultation process. You can contact me at 086-8324218 or 052-7442423.
SCOR NA PAISTE
After a gap of many years, Cahir GAA was represented in this year’s South final of the Scor na Paiste, which was held in the GAA centre in Clonmel on Sunday night last. We took part in four competitions: - Figure dancing, Recitation, Ballad group and Quiz. All the children did their club, mentors and town proud and really enjoyed the night. Our figure dancers opened the nights proceedings and looked extremely well in their green and white costumes they gave us a tremendous display of their dancing, with great credit going to their dancing teacher Paula Regan who has been helping the girls out over the past few weeks. We had a great recitation from Niamh O' Brien who did a wonderful rendition of an excerpt from Roddy Doyle's "The Giggler Treatment" complete with a very fetching dog costume! The Ballad group preformed Nead na Lacha with extreme confidence and the beautiful sweet voices and harmony of Joye Arbuckle, Nicole Sullivan, Caoimhe Hickey, Niamh O' Brien and Roisin Costigan were justly rewarded with first place in this section. Then it was the turn of the quiz team with John Casey, Brian McKenna and Darragh Howard taking up the mantle and winning first place again with a complete clear round of questions.

THE WINNING TEAM - NICOLE SULLIVAN, JOYE ARBUCKLE, CAOIMBE HICKEY, NIAMH O'BRIEN, & ROISIN COSTIGAN
This has been a fantastic performance by the Cahir club and now we will go on with the ballad group and the quiz team to Halla Na Feile on Friday next for the county final. Many thanks to the parents of the girls and boys, for encouraging the children to take part and indeed to all who helped out in any way. We look forward to another great night in Cashel where the starting time will be 7.30pm
