CAHIR NOTES 22nd APRIL
SCARBOROUGH CHARITY CYCLE
Three members of the Scarborough Cycling Club will cycle from Scarborough to Cahir as part of a sponsored cycle in aid of a worthy charity announced local Councillor Andy Moloney.
The Yorkshire Town which is twinned with Cahir, will see off members of the Scarborough Coasters Cycling Club on the 1st May when the journey will be tackled by Alana Parker, Anne Polkey and Fiona Mullane. They are due to arrive in Cahir on the 6th May, where they will be greeted by some of the stalwarts of the Cahir Contingent that have kept the links alive between both towns over the years.
Cllr Moloney says that the purpose of the cycle is to raise funds for Scarborough Cahir Community Youth Trust which is the organisation that provides youngsters with a holiday in Cahir for 5 days, who would not otherwise get the chance of a holiday, due to circumstances.
One of the riders, Ms Fiona Mullane is currently president of the Scarborough Law Society that has a tradition of raising funds for local charities said that she is delighted to be able to help such a worthy cause and that due to the economic downturn in the UK, that these funds will be a timely boost to the organisation.
Ms Mullane said that she is looking forward to the cycling challenge, as well as experiencing the Irish hospitality and a pint or two at the end of each day.
Cllr Andy Moloney has been in contact with the Yorkshire supporters who are planning the trip for the kids again this September and said that efforts are underway at the minute to organise this year’s trip to Scarborough, to keep the links alive. He is calling on all previous visitors to the coastal town of Scarborough, to come and meet the cyclists as they will only be staying for one night (compliments of The Bell) and give them the Cead Mile Failte that they deserve.
CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION.
The Holiday to Spain is now drawing near and we are in need a Sun Holiday, the weather is so dreary at the present time. Members start packing the sun cream and check your passport.
I spoke with one of our members recently and the subject of planting potatoes. When the best time to plant is and is it too early now or too late? The conclusion we came up with was a few weeks either way will make little difference. Then again, if you’re not the type of person who wants to spend their time managing an elaborate fruit or vegetable garden, you might consider maintaining and planting an herb garden. While the product might not seem as important, you’ll still enjoy the constant availability of fresh, delectable herbs to add taste your meals.

TOURIST INFORMATION AVAILABLE
Cllr Andy Moloney has made acted promptly to address rumours that the Tourist Office in Cahir would not open this year. He was approached last week following loose talk circulating that the office hadn’t opened on schedule and would not open during the coming year. Cllr Moloney has been assured that it will open this week with full services for the Cahir Area. With over 80,000 visitors to the Castle and over 20,000 to the Swiss Cottage last year it is essential that we capture this market and promote other areas of the Town and surrounds. He said that the Promoting Cahir Group is working hard to produce a new web page for the area and a glossy brochure to compliment this. He has also made moves to have a Tourist Information Centre available in Cahir, all year round. Moloney also stated that following his application to have a state of the art Library upgrade this year, he has been assured that once funds become available there would be a revamp of the Toilets and Tourist office on Castle Street.
Cllr Moloney said that he had been working on Plan B in the event that the office would not open and that the efforts of the people of Cahir, over the past 12 months to make Cahir an attractive town for visitors has been appreciated, by both Tidy Towns & Council Officials alike. By being proactive rather than reactive we will maintain our services in the area.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS FASHION SHOW
As I was unable to attend the Fashion Show in aid of the Tipperary Branch of Special Olympics Ireland, I asked Maureen Calvert to let me have some notes on the event, as there were some strong Cahir connections. She wrote:
“Some terrific organisation went into the planning of this show, which was a success on all counts, I imagine. There was a large and appreciative audience –there seemed to be standing room only- in the Hotel Minella. The hotel supplied ample changing space for the models and having two comperes worked brilliantly. They were Fran Curry of Tipp FM and the current Rose of Tralee, who as we know, is from Tipp Town.”
“Cahir’s own Brenda Hyland was present, although not modelling. She represented another place (Dublin, I think) when she was crowned the Rose of Tralee and it was great to have both our Roses there. Brenda’s two beautiful daughters were modelling, however. Talk about chips off the old block! Mrs Hyland must have been very proud, as Kathy was modelling too”.
“I was delighted to have five of “Maureen’s Models” on the catwalk. There should have been six, but poor Violetta has mumps- hope you are feeling better, V. There were some really gorgeous clothes to be seen, as well as Philip Tracey’s hats.”
“The Regional Co-Ordinator for this fundraising push is Noreen (I don’t know her surname) and she found some beautiful girls to model, in addition to the above mentioned. There were three Special Olympians on the catwalk, who made a great job of it, obviously enjoying the experience, and what lovely children.”
“I have not detailed the shops represented, or those who provided all the Raffle prizes, as I’m sure this will be covered elsewhere. Congratulations to the Chairman of the Tipperary Branch of Special Olympics Ireland, my old boss and Cahir man Joe O’Sullivan – it was lovely to see him there.”
Thanks Maureen, sounds like you had a good night.
