CAHIR NOTES 29TH APRIL

MICHEAL MARTIN TO ATTEND FUNDRAISER AT CAHIR COUNTRY MARKETS

Your support is greatly appreciated at a coffee morning at Cahir Country Markets, this Friday, May 1st, to fundraise for two Cahir university students, Marie Brennan and Amy Ryan, who have decided to give five weeks of their summer holidays to volunteer at the Udayan Care orphanage in New Delhi, India.

A special guest to attend the market is Mr Micheál Martin, Minister for Foreign Affairs, to wish the girls the best on their trip. Udayan Care run a number of orphanages in New Delhi, and the two girls will assist at an orphanage for girls aged seven to twenty. Marie and Amy have chosen to help the orphans and abandoned street children of India in their education, life skills and teaching the children simple games, Irish songs, poems and even a game of hurling!!

We look forward to seeing you on Friday morning, May 1st from 9.30am at Cahir Country Markets, Community Hall, Cahir. So make some time to have a cup of tea or coffee, some delicious homemade cakes and also get the chance to do a little bit of shopping with the markets range of freshly made cakes breads, pies, jams and preserves, fresh eggs and vegetables, handmade gifts
and lovely fresh and dried flowers.
The ladies at the market have informed me, that the total raised at the Hospice Coffee morning that was held a couple of weeks ago amounted to €2,233, a fantastic sum. This included the raffle on the day and the proceeds that came from the Easter Baskets in the local shops. Thank you to everyone who gave towards this very worthy cause.

ESTATE MAINTENANCE - Cllr Moloney?
At the Area Roads meeting last week a commitment was given to Cllr Andy Moloney and colleagues to press ahead with the re-surfacing of Woodview Housing Estate. Cllr Moloney had been making representations on behalf of many residents in the area for some time and is delighted that they will now have complete works to their area.
Councillor Moloney said that most of the estates in Cahir are now actively involved in the Tidy Towns Campaign and that Woodview had received a prize in last year local competition and that these works will be an added boost in the coming year. He hopes to be in a position again this year to have a similar event where almost €1500 in prizes, were presented on the awards night in Cahir Castle.
Woodview Residents have been active and the council’s commitment to re-surface the area is a testament to that work. Although funding has been cut in sections of the council, this project has been welcomed.

ROSEMOUNT NOTES

Our meeting on the 22nd April [Wed] was attended by the usual people, and thank you for your loyal support. As mentioned before the Co. Council have been hard hit with cut backs, so we as residents are going to have to get out ourselves and do our bit. We are living in changed times and it looks like we are going to have to get more involved in our own community with a hands-on approach. If everyone took care of their space around their place, it would make a big difference.
The plants are up and hopefully growing happily. The Co. Council have agreed to take care of the roundabout, but strimming and weeding will have to be done from funds from our own Residents Assoc.
Speaking of funds, we will be collecting our annual fee soon. Volunteers will be going around door to door at the end of June, start of July. There will be more information about this at a later date. We are hoping to host a Quiz Night at the beginning of July. Once again, there will be more information about this at a later date.
Our next BIG CLEAN UP is on MAY 6TH [WED] from 7PM--9PM. PLEASE COME OUT AND TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR AREA. We will be meeting at rock at Rosemount Avenue.
NEXT MEETING WED JUNE 24TH, 8PM SHAMROCK LOUNGE

CHRISTMAS BONUS DECISION CAUSING ANXIETY SAYS LONERGAN

Cllr Seanie Lonergan has been receiving numerous representations from local social welfare recipients concerning the decision of the present Fianna Fail led Government to abolish the Christmas bonus. According to Cllr. Lonergan, the Government's decision is causing anxiety for both old and young throughout the Cahir area. The Cllr wishes to make it clear that government TDs were provided with an opportunity to reverse this decision via a Labour Party Dail motion last week. However, Fianna Fail and Green TDs voted to abolish the bonus. Cllr Lonergan hopes that these TDs will accept full responsibility for their vote in Dail Eireann last week.

TABLE QUIZ

A very successful table quiz in aid of Cottage Animal Rescue was held on Friday last in the Abbey Tavern. Thanks to Tom Fahy and John Orme who organised the event. Cllr Seanie Lonergan acted as quizmaster. Almost €700 was raised on the night.  Thanks to all those who supported the event. A very special word of gratitude also, to Bernie and John of the Abbey Tavern, for their tremendous hospitality on the night.

NATIONAL COLLECTION DAY
Last Friday was the day selected by Special Olympics Ireland for a National Collection. In each area, volunteers - including athletes - were out in force to raise as much money as they could for this very special charity.
In Cahir, many students from the Coláiste were in evidence, as well as trainee Gardai and local supporters, in a well-organised effort.
It is, perhaps, a pity that there were other collections going on that were not sanctioned by Permit. I don’t believe that the other collectors knew their organisers did not have a Permit, but it didn’t make the task of the supporters of Special Olympics Ireland any easier.
It was interesting to see young people learning to organise events such as this. Comprehensive time-tables had been drawn up, with no-one being asked to do too much, and someone was on top of things at all times. This is invaluable experience for students to have gained.  Well done to you all.

This machine is vital for the treatment and rehabilitation of stroke victims and also brain injuries and at present the nearest machine is in Dublin. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Supermacs have informed me that they now have this service available Thursday to Sunday, to anywhere in the Cahir area. Contact 052 7445827 for details (I do love their chicken).

CONGRATULATIONS
I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only person watching Winning Streak last Saturday night, and rooting for local man Patrick Mulcahy, who took part in the popular show. It was great to see him do so well and also to see that he had a great bunch of supporters with him, all well known in Cahir. The icing on the cake was that he ended up spinning the wheel and winning a fantastic €78,000! I’m sure the whole town will join me in congratulating Patrick, well done to you.

CLONMEL EXCEL STAGE SCHOOL
The Stage School are having their annual show in the White Memorial Theatre on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th of April at 8pm. The students of the school are all participating in this increasingly popular annual show. Songs from Bugsy Malone, Wicked, Mamma Mia and The Wizard of Oz are included, with some great dance routines and many outstanding performers. The show is produced and directed by Pat and Fran Marnane , Fran actually penned the script herself. Tickets are available from Marians Bookstore for €12. Contact 052 23813 for details. I can highly recommend this show having seen the Tipperary Excel Stage Schools version and I will certainly be there.

DONKEY DERBY

The Donkey Derby in aid of Special Olympics Ireland has been changed to Sunday 31st May, the reason the event has been moved is because of the conditions of the Inch Field, Special Olympics Ireland are aware that at present holding an event such as a Donkey Derby could damage the field, hence the date has been moved to Monday 1st June.
The Donkey derby will include a dog show, sports activities for the children, tug of war, music, barbecue and a water raft race. The water raft race will be judged on the winner and the most unique design on the day.
The Donkey Derby will start at 2 pm and finish at 6 pm, a massive thank you to our Twenty Jockeys who have kindly donated their time on the day.
For application forms for the water raft race, contact Noreen Condon Tobin on 0851640632 or call in to our Offices in Market Place, Clonmel.

IRWINS YARD RE-OPENS
I went along on Friday night last to the reopening of Irwins Yard in the Square in Cahir. Irwins has always been a favourite of mine and the town hasn’t felt the same since it closed a couple of months ago. Pierce Connell and his wife Shirley have taken over in Irwins and have done a fantastic job, clearing out all the clutter and generally spring cleaning the place. The Yard has been totally cleared and new seating fitted. Yet the premises still retains original feel which Irwins has always been known for.
Pierce tells me that there are still a few things that will be changed in the coming weeks and that he hopes to keep the Irwins tradition of musical entertainment in the form of live music/bands. This is always good to hear, as I’m a big fan of live music. I look forward to spending some evenings relaxing in Irwins, listening to some good music. Congratulations on the opening and best of luck to you both.

NEW EXHIBITION AT TEH CRAFT GRANARY

The Craft Granary presents the CTI Senior College Clonmel ' End of Year' Show. This exhibition is a collection of work based on the Irish Famine. These art works use images to illustrate the disease, corruption and destruction of what was to be known as the Great Hunger, captured in photography, sculpture and print. This exhibition runs from 1st to 17th May in the Craft Granary Church Street, Cahir.

SUMMER TIME AT THE FARMERS MARKET.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NEWS

If you were looking for a fast, lively skilful game of camogie, then Duneske was to place to have been on Wednesday night last. Our U14B team were out against Drom and Inch and the spectators were treated to a fine game of camogie. From the throw in Drom were in possession of the sliothar but sheer determination from the Cahir girls saw a ball sent into the Drom back line and Roisin Howard true to her usual form rattled the back of the net for the first score of the night. Drom had some fine players and their work rate was fantastic so much so, that by half time the score was level with each team on 2goals and 2points apiece. With the wind against us in the second half we knew we would have to keep our heads and our focus if we were to stay in touch with Drom and a great early save from Cahir goalie Sadhbh O' Donnell was what we needed to settle the team down.
The final 10 minutes of the game was a really hard battle with players getting tired but an accurate free from Ashling Moloney and a further fine goal from Ashling McCarthy saw Cahir edge out in front to claim their second victory in the league so far. Each player contributed greatly to this success, but one notable exception was Katie Farrell who showed some great skill on the night. The final score was Cahir 3-5 Drom 2-4.

CAHIR BINGO

Cahir Bingo is going well at the moment. The lucky number last night was €530 plus €70 for the full house. This seems to be keeping people interested but there are many opportunities to win as well as the lucky number. When things are good the local benefits are also good. Cahir bingo is run on a voluntary basis and any profits are donated to local people and all the various causes they support. To this end we donated funds to both primary schools in March and have just donated to MS Ireland, the Special Olympics and to Marie and Amy for their 5 week stint in Africa. Thank you all for your continued support at bingo every Tuesday in the community hall at 8.30pm.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

Happy birthday wishes go to Sean Hubbard on Wednesday 29th April from all his family and his many, many friends (seriously Sean, you didn’t think you were going to get away with that!).

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
“A cynic is a person who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing”.
Oscar Wilde.

YOUTH LEAGUE DIVISION 2
I made a mistake last week when I congratulated the Cahir Youth Team on their 4 -2 victory over Two Mile Borris, when it should have been Clerihan. Well done again on winning the 2nd Division Youth Cup and sorry I got it wrong first time. Good Luck in the Final.

READERS NEWS AND VIEWS
If you have any news, views or notes for the Cahir page you can contact me on 086 1022014 or email me on caplicetaylor@hotmail.com. By Sunday of course, because that is when I do the notes. Thank you.
