CAHIR NOTES 17TH MAY
CAHIR RAILWAY STATION
Cllr.Seanie Lonergan has contacted Deputy Tommy Broughan regarding the railway station .The Deputy has contacted the
CEO of Irish Rail, Mr,Dick Feam and asked him to treat the situation at Cahir with the greatest urgency. Cllr Lonergan has
demanded that these essential facilities be opened without delay. The Cllr has said that it is inexcusable that people travelling
to hospitals in the cities are expected to be without a waiting room and toilet facilities.
DAIL QUESTION ON CRUMLIN HOSPITAL
Following concerns raised by parents in the Cahir area about the future of Our Lady’s Children Hospital Crumlin, Cllr Seanie
Lonergan asked his colleague Deputy Joan Burton to raise the matter in Dail Eireann. Health Minister Mary Harney gave the
following reply. ‘Services at Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin, the National Children's Hospital, Tallaght and Temple Street
Children’s University Hospital will transfer to the new National Paediatric Hospital. Pending completion of the project, the HSE
will continue to finance the provision and development of services at each of the transferring hospitals. The development of the
National Paediatric Hospital is a priority project for the Government. The project is proceeding as planned and is being overseen by
the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board which was established in May, 2007. The HSE is working closely with the
Board in furthering the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2014. The new hospital will be based at the Mater Hospital and
will include an associated Ambulatory and Urgent Care Centre at Tallaght’.
DAN COSTIGAN TO BACK ALLOTMENTS IN CAHIR
Independent candidate Dan Costigan who is running in the forthcoming local elections believes that the locality of Cahir needs to look into
the possibility of setting up an allotment scheme in the area. Concerns have been raised in recent weeks by local people that Cahir is missing
an opportunity to establish such a scheme. Cashel has secured land for allotments and Tipperary Town are in the process of pursuing same.
These are two such examples where allotment schemes have been piloted to considerable effect. The Clonmel Allotment Association has been
recently set up with regards to local food, how to grow your own vegetables and they have created a website to help with any queries you
may have. Dan sees no reason why Cahir should not organise such a scheme whereby the whole community could become involved in growing
local food. In the current economic climate with food and fuel becoming ever more expensive, Dan sees local food growing as a possibility that
should be explored further. If a site could be obtained allotments would present the community with the opportunity to grow local food and
create a sense of community spirit. This would be a great way to promote locally produced produce. Dan sees this as a vital issue and in
the forthcoming weeks he will be examining ways in which to highlight the issue. Dan believes that there is no reason why a site cannot be
obtained for such allotments and that the town of Cahir would benefit greatly if such a scheme were set up.

SPECIAL GUEST FOR TURNING OF SOD
Cahir Park AFC Officials were delighted to have none other than John Delaney FAI CEO present to turn the sod for the new clubhouse on
Friday last. Mr. Delaney expressed his pleasure at being invited to Cahir Park to perform what he called the honour of turning the sod for a new

when the pitch was full of lumps and bumps and commented on the overall good conditions of the park and pitches now. He wished Cahir Park AFC

INCREMENTAL PURCHASE SCHEME
As most people already know, a new purchase scheme was recently launched by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local
Government. This scheme is being made available to Social Housing tenants and households eligible for social housing. As the scheme is a
demonstration project, it is being confined to eligible persons within Cahir Town. These houses consist of 19 dwellings at Sraid Na gCuach,
Upper Abbey Street, Cahir (across from Avondale Court). If you are interested in being considered for this scheme, or if you
would like to find out more about this opportunity to become a home owner you are invited to attend an information meeting on 20th May,
2009, at Cahir House Hotel at 8pm. The meeting will be in the format of a presentation by staff followed by a questions and answers session.

COMMUNION CLASS, CAHIR 2009
WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Thanks to Micheal Power, founder and chief instructor of the Cahir Shotokan Karate club, based at Duneske Leisure Centre, for sending me
the news that two Cahir men will represent Ireland in Karate this July.
He sent in the following.
“I am proud to announce that Darren Fennessey and Barry O`Neill, my two assistant instructors, have been selected for the Irish International
Karate Team, to compete in Greece at the world championship in July of this year. Darren, who is from Clogheen, and Barry, who is from Lisava,
Cahir, have both been members of the club for the last 19yrs and 14yrs respectively. Both Darren and Barry have competed on the Irish and
International circuit for a number of years and have won at all major Competitions. Considering that this has been done at their own expense,
as we receive no funding or sponsorship, this is some achievement on their behalf. The lads are only just back from Holland, having competed
there as members of the Irish team. Their performance at this competition sealed their places on the International Team. On another
note, I would also like to congratulate Barry on passing his Nidan( 2 Dan Black Belt) grade under Hirokazu Kanazawa, who is the chief
instructor of Shotokan Karate Do Federation, Japan. Five other members of the club graded under Sensei Kanazawa and all passed with flying
colours. They were William English, 1st Kyu, Shane Flannery, 4th Kyu, Nathan Keating, 5th Kyu, and Michael Bridges, 9th Kyu. I would also
like to thank Pat Beary, from Abbey Street, Cahir, who is another instructor at the club, for his assistance in conditioning the lads for
the squad sessions. Also to Tim Shanahan and Joe Walsh, who on hearing of the selection of Darren and Barry to the International Team, have
assisted by way of sponsorship, for their trip to Greece.”
Good Luck to both of them.
2010 CALENDAR FOR CRUMLIN
The greatest calendar ever will be on sale around September. There are 12 great models and 12 beautiful children taking part in it. Bernie O
Brien from New Age Photography in Cahir is putting major work into this project and working to his usual high standard. I can’t thank Bernie
enough for helping me out on many occasions. So don’t buy a calendar for 2010 till you see this one.
I'm looking for businesses in the Cahir area to sponsor a page for about €200, I have 2 sponsors already so I only need 10 more, this will
cover the printing costs and any money made from the calendar goes straight to Crumlin Children’s Hospital. So if you would like to
sponsor a page, contact Pat Cunningham 0861511853.
CAHIR BOYS N.S. Discover Science Award Winners 2009?
Cahir Boys NS were announced as award winners in the Discover Primary Science Project in Primary Schools. Below is an account of the School
Science Open Day held recently. Every class in the school and parents of 1st & 6th classes were invited to see the demonstrations and
experiments. The room was packed and the atmosphere was electric. This was followed last week by the announcement from Discover Science of
achieving the Award of Science Excellence. Below is a brief account of the day.
On Tuesday 28th April 2009, 1st class and 6th class held a science open-day; we showed a variety of different science experiments.
Teachers, pupils and parents were welcome to come along to view them.
First class had demonstrations on bridge building, floating eggs, using salt in water, the effects of warm/hot air (dancing snakes), mixing
oil, water and colouring, exploding volcanoes and dancing raisins 6th class had a range of group projects.
One group made 2-D and 3-D Knex models, showing their engineering skills. A homemade lighthouse showed how an electric current can light
up a bulb. A tornado machine was made by connecting two plastic bottles and putting in some water and swirling it to create a tornado effect.
A diorama of the solar system showed how the planets compared in size.
Equipment and methods of measuring density, mass and volume were displayed to all who asked. Stop Motion, as a technique of animation
was demonstrated via a laptop and projector. There was also a computerised display of selected car facts.
A 3-D soccer pitch was built to show how a magnetic force can be used in a game. A glass prism, a battery operated spinner and spectrum or
rainbow coloured disks were used to show how to make white light.Self-made life buoys were put to work in a water pool. There was a
demonstration on static electricity and another on how to test if a substance was an acid or a base using a red cabbage indicator.
Many thanks are due to Mrs. Grogan, Mrs. Fahy and the SNAs Patricia and Sinéad for their huge work throughout the year, in providing a wide
range of science experiences for everyone. More information and photos can be seen on http://cahirboys.blogspot.com.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES
Many thanks to all our club members, who turned up on Sunday last to help celebrate the 125th anniversary of the GAA. It was a great day and
well done to the organising committee. Our U10 panel travelled to St. Mary's in Clonmel on Saturday to take part in the host clubs Blitz -
full report next week. Well done also to the Community Games Camogie team who defeated Thurles on Tuesday evening last in Duneske.
Some girls from the U10 panel recently attended a Camogie Blitz held by St. Mary's Clonmel. The girls put on a fine performance and played
teams form Moyle Rovers, St. Mary's (both of which they won) leading them on to play Carrick on Suir in the final. However Carrick proved
too strong for our girls but never the less they played with courage and commitment and that is all we ever ask for. The panel was as
follows: Dervla Buckley, Sarah Burke, Roisin McCarthy Orla Cashman, Lauren Noonan, Emily Donovan, Emma Quirke, Sophie Sheehan, Emily
Lenihan, Fiona McEniry, Niamh McKenna, Aoife Cashman, Sarah Malone and Leah Ward. Well done to all the girls but in particular the very young
U8's who travelled. We would also like to say a big thank you to Margaret McCarthy and all the parents who gave of their time to travel
with the children.
The County semi-final of the U14B league takes place on this Thursday (21st) evening at the County Camogie grounds in the Ragg. Our opponents
on the night will be Moneygall so a good game is to be expected. Starting at 7pm all support would be gratefully appreciated.
CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW
The very best of luck to Kilkenny florist Lucy Yeates and her sons Vinny and Gary, who will compete at the Chelsea Flower Show, for the
sixth time tomorrow. It is good to hear of Irish competitors.
CPR LESSONS FOR STUDENTS
The Irish Heart Foundation will give 27,000 transition year students resuscitation lessons this year. The leading charity said that vital
life-saving CPR skills should be taught to every child in the country. They also want heart attack first-aid classes on the official
curriculum. It could certainly save many lives. Fair play to them.
