Press Release

30/05/2009

Tommy Meehan has noted the need for a second major Bank Link Machine to be installed into the town of Cahir.  Currently we have just one main Bank Link at the AIB, with one minor in Dolans of Cahir and one in Spar.  Once Dolans and Spar is shut we are left with just one Bank link.

The issue comes as result of last weekend where AIB’s bank machine was down and therefore there was no Bank Link in working order in Cahir after Dolans and Spar are shut.  Local people were travelling to Cashel and Clonmel for funds for the weekend.

Tommy has sais “that is a disguise that for a town with an increasing population that we have only one major Bank Link in Cahir”

If elected this in one of Tommy’s issues that he hopes to resolve on behalf of the local people.

CAHIR POST OFFICE BECOMES NATIONAL SUCCESS STORY
Cahir Post Office has been hailed as a major national success story by Cllr Seanie Lonergan. According to Cllr Lonergan, Cahir Post office’s Post Bank service currently tops the national league in respect of new accounts being opened. This means that of the 900 post banks on the Island of Ireland, Cahir Post Bank is out performing all of its competitors.
Cllr Lonergan States ‘This is an extraordinary national success story. I am immensely proud of Cahir Post Office’s performance. In reality, on this measure, Cahir Post Office is the best performer on the entire Island of Ireland. I wish to sincerely thank Henry Reidy and the ten staff members for putting Cahir Post Office on the national map. Henry brings twenty five years of postal experience to the job which is very evident when one looks at his innovative management style. Sincere thanks also to the people of Cahir and surrounding areas for getting behind Henry and his team’.
Cllr Lonergan adds that ‘Across a range of other services the Post Office excels. For example, no less than 200 bill pays are processed every day. And looking to the future, the Post Office Counter is will be extended within the next week. This means that a third terminal will be available to customers. Cllr Lonergan concludes that ‘It is clear from these and other figures that Cahir Post Office is offering a top class range of services. It is also clear that our Post Office which was faced the threat of downgrading just two years ago has a very bright future. An added bonus was meeting so many members of the Active Retirement Association plus friends from various walks of life. One friend of mine pointed out the diverse planting arrangements in the planters and baskets around the town this year. CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES

Our U12 team recorded their first win of this year’s championship with a hard won battle over Toomevara. We have to expect tough competition this year as we are in the A championship so nothing will be easy. We were without some of our older players for this first game so some of the younger players on the panel had to step up to the challenge - and indeed they did, each one playing a vital part in the win. Special mention must go to our goalie Keely Halpin who had a fantastic game. The final score was Cahir 1-2 to Toome's 0-1.
The final of the U14 B league will take place in the Ragg on Wednesday evening June 3rd at 7pm where our opponents will be Moneygall.
Club track suits, hoodies, bags, sock's and shorts are now available. For further information please contact Martin Halpin or any club officer.

SOUTH TIPPERARY SINN FÈIN
New Planning Rules a disgrace – Kevin Brunnick
Sinn Féin local election candidate for the Cahir area Kevin Brunnick, has this week branded the new planning rules adopted by South Tipperary County Council a disgrace. A new County Development Plan was voted in by South Tipperary County Council in March that will have a significant impact on rural planning. “The new plan, voted in by the current councillors, has number of areas across the county which it refers to as ‘Amenity Areas’ where it is no longer possible to get planning permission for a rural house unless you are a farmer. The major problem is the extent of these areas. If a person drives from Newcastle to Ballyporeen all the land on the left is an amenity area, also from the outskirts of Cahir up to Bansha and across to Lisvernane is an amenity area.”
“The council and the councillors that voted this plan in have effectively ruled out new houses in these areas. While farmers are an important part of a rural community they are not the only part and for the council to effectively tell rural dwellers that their children will never have the opportunity to build their own home in their own locality simply beggars belief. If the people of the Cahir area elect me I’ll be seeking to change the County Development Plan to rectify this situation.

ICE CREAM SUNDAE
Many thanks to all who supported the Ice cream Party that took place on Sunday last at Hickeys in Ballingeary. The party was in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland. Your support
is greatly appreciated.

CAHIR COUNTRY MARKET
Why not drop into Cahir Country Market on a Friday morning between 9.30 and 11am. You are bound to pick up something you need as the market is full of a lovely range of breads, cakes, pies and buns, also beautiful handmade gifts and crafts. There is a selection of fresh vegetables, eggs and honey, and stunning arrangements of both fresh and dried flowers. I believe there is a new stall too. So get down to the community hall on a friday and have a cup of tea and do a spot of shopping as well.

POULMUCKA ROAD RACE
The Annual Poulmucka Road Race was a huge success again this year with 154 runners turning up for the 8k race. Co ordinatiing an event this size is not an easy task, but they are a special community in Poulmucka where everyone is always willing to lend a hand.
It is not always possible to thank everyone who helps out at events such as theses but the following are some of the many.
Tommy Cahill for his support and advice, we could not do this without you. Our sponsors whose generosity makes this race happen. To the Moloney Family, for their generosity and hospitality and the ladies behind the scenes who work so hard at the refreshments, making the race renowned for its hospitality To Niall who helps out on the road and organises the race each year and of course to the local Garda, without their help we could not hold this race. To all the boys, Charlie Shaw, Larry Molan, Sean Mooney, Donal Moloney, Tony Donovan, Kevin Corcoran, Martin Moloney, Tom Walsh, Bernard Gould and Cllr Andy Moloney for their help every year. To Vincent McDonagh, for leading the runners safely around on their journey. To those who took videos that we enjoyed watching afterwards, Thanky you. To the children who helped at the water station, Chantelle, Daniel, Richie, Aisling, Oisin and John. To all the children who took part in the first children’s race which was great fun and added to the great atmosphere. To Gerry Bell, for the music and the sound system. A very big Thanks to Clonmel Ac for their support and advice every year. To Edi Smith, for her invaluable work in taking the entries and to both Edi and Niall O’Sullivan for their work at the finish line.
Well done to all involved, we look forward to next year already.

SHAVEATHON AT THE BELL
Last Friday 29th May a Shaveathon took place in The Bell on Pearse Street in Cahir. It was held in aid of C.A.R.E Society that provides help, advice, support and aftercare to those who victims of cancer. There were several head shaves, a double leg wax, a beard shave and a really painful looking double arm wax! Thank and admiration are due to those who willingly obliged for this very worthy cause and they were, Philip Cleary, John Duggan and Dave O’Brien who shaved their heads, Deputy Mattie McGrath who had both his legs shaved, Liam O’Connor who had his beard shaved off and Jim O’Rourke who deserves a medal for putting up with several people who paid to pull the wax strips off his arms (some did it very slowly ouch!) I feel like I have forgotten someone, if I have, I will mention them next week. There was a great raffle with lots of great prizes, many thanks to the sponsors. There was great music and a great atmosphere in The Bell that night, and I certainly enjoyed myself. The amount that was raised before all the cards were in was a whopping €2,500 so far! Well done to all involved. I will let you know the final amount as soon as I get it.
