CAHIR NOTES 28th JUNE
Letter from India for Town of Cahir
I had asked Amy Ryan and Marie Brennan to keep in contact with me while they were in India and was surprised and also rather touched by this lovely letter from a volunteer in the Boys home where the girls are also volunteering. Go ahead and read for it yourselves.
Dear Cahir,
You may be surprised to receive this letter all the way from India, but this letter is overdue. Two bright young women Marie Brennan & Amy Ryan from your town Cahir are in India working with underprivileged children at Udayan Boys Home in Noida. Their warmth and love have delighted the kids and have enthused new life into them. Be it Irish dancing, discovery Ireland or watching Ireland versus India cricket match, there is a bit of Ireland in all of us now. GO IRISHHHH !!! We have learnt that the town of Cahir contributed to the efforts of these young ladies and we would like to thank from bottom of our hearts the town and all those who were part of this noble deed and cause. Such gestures go a long way in promoting goodwill, brotherhood and human bonding across borders. The contribution of the town and its two bright ambassadors will surely be remembered by these children and all of us to come for its impact and well meaning thoughts. I hope that the town and its beautiful people keep doing their bit to change the world one child at a time and more towns around Ireland and the world will take lead from it and spread the goodwill all over the World.
With Warm Regards from all of India and a Prayer to God that someday one of us gets to visit your town and meet the people there.
Sameer Pathak.(Volunteer with Udayan Boys Home, Noida, India)

Cahir Tidy Towns Committeeþ
Moloneys Hot Air Balloon.
The Chairman of Cahir Tidy Towns Committee, Andy Moloney has praised the hard working committee who give up their spare time on Litter picking missions in the Estates and Walkways of Cahir for their efforts to date.
Moloney feels that the improvement of 23 marks in last year’s results was no freak, but he feels that there needs to be a better awareness of the litter situation in the town. To this end he plans running a campaign on Litter awareness and the first event will be a Hot Air Balloon Exhibition and flight in Cahir on Sunday August 2nd. This will be held in conjunction with Cahir Development Association who will hold a Family Day and BBQ in Duneske to coincide with the event. Hot Air Balloons were a common feature leaving the grounds of Rockwell College years ago and this is sure to be a novel event. This should be a great occasion and locals will get the chance to fly on the Balloon by buying a line for €5. These will be on sale in all the local establishments and local Residents groups.
Cahir Tidy Towns are working for the betterment of the town and the more people that get involved in their area the better. There is some great co-operation with the council on litter collection but resources are not there to do it all.
If there is anyone interested in flying in the Balloon, which will take 3 & 1/2 hours in total between setting up and flying, they should contact Andy Moloney on 086-3609110 or Tim Shanahan at the Business and Training Centre. More details will follow next week.
IRWINS YARD
Irwins Yard Traditional Pub & Beer Garden in the Square, Cahir have started serving Homemade Soups and Sandwiches from 11am till 4pm Monday to Saturday. From Roast Chicken & Stuffing Sandwiches to the favourite Toasted Special and follow on to the Fruit Scones with Jam & Cream and wash it all down with a Luscious Latte or Cappuccino. Call in and relax with some Comfort Foods and Hot Drinks while watching the Match or simply enjoying the Sun in the secure comfortable Beer Garden to the rear of the Pub . We can also provide Catering for Parties and Events.
Keep your eye on the Paper and on the Posters around Town to see what Live Music is on offer throughout the week at Irwins Yard. We feel that Cahir needs some more Live Music to cheer people up in these uncertain times. Where Tourists are thin on the ground this year, we feel it is vital to offer some entertainment in the area, so they may stay overnight in Cahir, thus spending more in the local economy. Our customers have expressed their desire for more live music during the summer here in Irwins. “Life is for living, so let’s live it!” was one comment from a loyal customer recently.
Live Music
Speaking of live music, I see that most pubs around the town are now providing live music for their customers. The Gatehouse has also recently started a traditional music night on a Thursday. Long may it continue, we certainly do need to be cheered up and entertained on occasion and the more choice the better.
Book Launch:
To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Ardfinnan, Ballybacon, Grange, Newcastle Gun Club will launch a book titled ’40 Years On’ on Thursday, 9th July at 7.30 pm in the Glenview Lounge, Goatenbridge. Authored by well -known game hunter and conservationist, Dr. Douglas Butler of Golden, the book will be formally launched by David Wilkinson, Chairman of IFA Countryside. The club wishes to emphasise that this is an open event and all members of our local community are invited to attend. Club members past and present are asked to make a special effort to attend.
Beech Park Residents
A skip will be dropped off in the estate on Friday 3rd of July and will be collected Saturday the 4th July. There was a great turn out of children for the clean up in the estate well done! Not forgetting the adults who helped. Thank you.
The new car park where the holly tree used to be is nearly finished, this will be of great benefit to those who have had to park on the footpaths, many thanks to the Council for their hard work.
YUMMY FOOD!
Everyone visiting the centre of Cahir recently could hardly have missed the new Chinese Restaurant (orange!) that has replaced the take-away in Castle Street. It is amazing how much space has been found for seating at the Yummy House.
I am told that the food is excellent - one person said he couldn't get better in Soho - and the service is just as good as the food. As it is such a large menu, it might be best to stick to the Chef's Specials, many of which haven't been seen in Cahir before. And good luck to them.
Tidy Towns Enhancement Awards
This is the final week for entries. There will be judging in five categories: best estate; most improved estate; best shop front; tidiest business premises; best hanging baskets; best individual garden. This year we are asking all those interested (Residents Associations, Businesses, Residents etc.,) to fill out an entry form and pay the small fee of €5 per entry and they need to be submitted by Friday, 3rd July. We are very pleased to announce that Dolan’s Super Valu in Cahir have come on board again this year, with their generous sponsorship. Details and entry forms can be obtained from Anne Burke at Erasmus House by calling in or phoning 052-7468902.
Cahir & District Ladies Clubþ
The ladies enjoyed a great night out in Bru Boru in Cashel on Saturday 20th June. We had a lovely meal and the show afterwards, then went in to join the session later where some of us danced to the music and sang along to the songs. We had a soft jig from Sharon that she had not done for over 20 years, but had great fun refreshing her steps and without too many drinks!!
We are going bowling and for a few drinks afterwards on Friday 3rd July. We are meeting at 7pm at the hall. Hope to see you all there. Thanks again to Tricia Brunnick for all her hard work organising talks and the nights out for the year.
Scarborough Friends
Mike Manning our good friend from Scarborough wrote to me last week and I’m sharing his very interesting news.
Hi Maria, I was pleased to read in the paper that Andy intends organising a Scarborough trip in October, also of the link between your diving club and Scarborough’s sub aqua club. We also have an active Flower Club, Choral Society, Hash harriers running club and some of my customers are Scout group leaders. I’m sure that there are many more groups in each town that would like to be linked up. I would be happy to put each in contact if anyone is interested in doing so. They can get my phone number or e-mail address from yourself. Best wishes to all and we look forward to your next visit. Mike Manning.
So if you are a member in one of the clubs Mike mentioned, you may be interested in meeting your Scarborough club counterpart and go on the trip to Scarborough this year. But anybody that is interested is most welcome. Contact Andy Moloney on 086 3609110 for details.
Cahir Boys National School
On Thursday 18th June, Cahir Boys National School were represented at the ‘Xperience Engineering’ National Final in The Helix, DCU, Dublin. The ‘Xperience Engineering’ competition is organised by Engineers Ireland and its aim is to promote engineering in primary schools. The theme of this year’s project was ‘Engineers Save Lives’. The boys in 6th class chose to look at Lifebuoys for their project as they felt that in a town like Cahir, Lifebuoys can help save lives.
The project also involved a classroom visit by Mr. John Sheehan from the Cahir River Rescue Unit. John is also a member of the Cahir Dive Club. He showed the boys the equipment used by the River Rescue Unit and by the Divers. We would like to thank both Brendan O’Dwyer and John Sheehan for their help during this project.
All the aspects of the project were recorded and photographed and entered into the competition. The boy’s hard work paid off when they were announced as one of the 20 finalists in the 5th/6th class category. Four boys were chosen to represent the class at the National Final; John Casey and Evan Purtill presented and explained the project to the judges and Sean Sweeney and Stephen O’Donoghue took part in The K’Nex Challenge, to build a robot. On the day of the Final the boys did an excellent job and it was a great experience to be part of the final. Within the school, the project has helped raise the awareness of the children as to the location, function and importance of the lifebuoys in the community.

A minute’s silence was held before they set off as a mark of respect for the young man who lost his life and the organisers would like to take this opportunity to convey sincerest sympathies to his family and friends.

Deepest Sympathies
I would like to extend condolences to the family of the late J.J. Grace of Bansha, who passed away suddenly last week. Especially to his wife Nora, his sons Tom and David, his daughter Colette, his daughter in law Amanda and also to his grandchildren. Sincere Sympathies too to all of JJ’s extended family and many many friends.
JJ had just retired from Tarrants and Nora and he were due to celebrate 40 years of marriage just days after he passed away. He was a huge fan of traditional music and it was only fitting that both the Church where the very touching ceremony was held in Bansha and the churchyard afterwards rang out with the sound of traditional music played by musicians who knew JJ so very well. You will be missed JJ. Rest in peace.

The winner of the raffle that was held on the 26th June, was Dylan Walsh of 45 Barnora Crescent.
