CAHIR NOTES 8TH JULY

CRUMLIN MOTORBIKE CRUISE?

The Remember a Friend Cruise took place last Sunday 28th July. This was all about remembering people who have lost their lives on our roads, the sadness and torment for families left behind and the survivors who have to live with the sad memories.
A tragic accident on the Tipperary road also last Sunday, took the life of a young motorcyclist on his way to Limerick and cast a very sad feeling over the event. We decided to do the run anyway as a tribute to our fellow biker and to do a safe and controlled run. After a brief talk on safety and the road conditions, and the change of route, we had a minute’s silence for the latest victim on our roads and our friends before him.
As the Gardai were very busy with the tragic situation, they could not accompany us as planned, so I led the motorcyclists to the road. A crowd of about 40 bikers turned up on a wet day and also 3 new bike enthusiasts. Colin was there on his moped too, He’s some man. The cruise headed to Mitchelstown and the weather picked up a bit (well for 10 minutes anyway) so we headed to Gallbally, Lisvernane, Bansha and back to Cahir for lunch. Every one drove perfectly and the new bikers did really well.
A Few Tips for Safety.
Safety
is all important especially on motorbikes. Taking Lessons is a must. Now there’s an idea for birthday or Christmas presents. I know it’s fairly good weather at the moment, but you must wear Proper bike gear at all times. Summer suits are available from all bike shops. They have the body armour and also vented to leave air in and around the body, although they are not as tough as the heavier gear, they are far better than shorts and tee shirt. It’s far better to leave material on the ground, than your skin! Boots, armoured clothing, a reflective jacket that zips up, gloves and approved helmet should be standard fare before you even get on a bike. By the way Bike buyers guide magazine are giving a free high visibility jacket this month, so see if you can pick one up at the newsagents or shop. Keep your bike in good condition, service it regularly, have good tyres and check tyre pressure frequently. There is a lot to learn about motorcycling and driving on the roads. You can’t beat experience and hearing of other peoples experiences.
We would also like to say get better soon to Shauna Flynn, who is recovering at the moment.
Thanks to Anne, Ciara, and Evan Cunningham for work before during and after the event and Joe, Maxi, Seamus for their help on the day. Thanks to all who turned up on a miserable day, we raised €1200 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital.
The Cruise took place as a mark of respect to the crash victim and we offer our condolences to his family. Our heart goes out to his family and friends and all involved in this tragic situation.
I will do this Cruise again next year as I think it’s a good thing to highlight the accident rate on our roads and try and save some lives, that’s the goal. I hope more people turn up next year and put photos on the wall, as this is what will get through to people. Drive safe, enjoy the scenery and freedom and keep your picture off the wall, that’s the rule. And just for the record, if I’m ever doing an event and God forbid anything happens to me, the show must go on.
Thank you to Patsy Cunningham for this report and safety tips too.

Richie O Mahoney DVD.
The Richie O Mahoney DVD is ready. The day was great and the music rocks. I will organise a night to show it in Ardfinnan and in The Gate House in Cahir. Copies can be ordered, just get in touch Pat Cunningham 086 1511853. Also coming up soon is the Euro a hug night. Emma McEniery and I will be visiting pubs and charging €1 per hug. So if you need a hug to cheer you up, we’re the ones to do it. All money raised goes to Crumlin Children’s Hospital and a hug will only cost you €1, where would you get it?? The Calendar for 2010 is well under way and it’s going to be fantastic. Some pictures have been taken by New Age Photography and they are amazing. It will be the best €10 you will spend this year, and hopefully it should be on sale by September.
Thank you to Patsy Cunningham for this report and good to see the all important safety tips too.

CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
W/E 27 06 2009
Breaking News! Our trip to Dublin will take place on the 30th July. The coach will be leaving Cahir @ 8.00 am sharp. We will be visiting Farnleigh House, Ardgillan Demesne and House Guinness Storehouse. Dinner will be at the Poitin Still. Monies for this trip can be paid to any member of the Committee.
There was an excellent turn out at the monthly meeting. After the business was discussed and refreshments taken, we were entertained by Steven Grace and Tony O Dwyer. The excellent music and great sing-a-long was enjoyed by all. Once again, many thanks to the willing volunteers for the light refreshments served at every meeting.
JOBS FOR JULY IN THE KITCHEN GARDEN.
Fan-trained fruit. Unwanted shoots should be cut off plums and apricots to maintain the fan shape. With figs, prune out the tips of any unwanted side shoots after the fifth leaf, or remove them completely.
Herbs. Woody stemmed herbs such as sage and thyme produce lots of fresh healthy new shoots at this time of year, which will quickly root if taken as cuttings.
Harvest beetroot and other crops while they are still young and tender. Early potatoes will be ready to harvest soon. Check one plant first to assess the crop size. Leave them to develop further if the potatoes are too small, and water the rows every week.
Fruit crops. Enjoy the fruits of your labours by picking rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, currants, cherries and gooseberries. Remember to net fruit bushes to keep birds away, but it is important to check the netting daily to ensure that no birds have become trapped.
Sweet corn. Plant out pot-grown sweet corn. Place the plants in blocks, not rows, spacing them out about 45cm (18in) apart each way.
Our weekly visit to Duneske continues every Thursday morning at 11 a.m. all welcome to take part in our keep fit course.
The Annual Summer Dinner will be held at the McAuley Room on Wednesday 8th July at 7.30 p.m. Light entertainment will be on hand to make this a memorable occasion.

CAHIR DIVE CLUB NEWS
On Friday 26th June, four divers and three non-divers departed Cahir for a weekend of diving and sunbathing in the Gaeltacht area of the Ballinskelligs, south west Kerry. The Ballinskelligs is a village in the south-west of the Iveragh peninsula in the Gaeltacht region of Co. Kerry. It is famous for the rocks, Skellig Beag, in an ancient monastic colony and Skellig Michael, a peaceful spiritual idyll and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. The town itself is also the site of an attractive beach and other historic features. Three dive sites were explored over the course of the weekend. The first dive was done on the north side of Puffin Island. Star fish, pollock, mackeral and jellyfish were the main attraction for the divers, while boat crew eagerly counted puffins.
The second dive of the weekend was Skellig Beag. On arriving to the Skellig, six seals were resting on a rock by the Skellig Beag and joined the divers underwater, proving to be very playful. Amused divers also saw crustaceans, and patrolling dogfish. The third dive took place late Saturday afternoon with plenty more sea life on display. The highlight of this last trip for the divers was the basking sharks seen on the way back to the main land. Basking shark are the second largest fish in the sea after the whale shark and are seasonal visitors to the coastline…lucky for Cahir divers, they only feed on plankton! Thanks to head chef, Jane for providing delicious meals throughout the weekend for the hungry divers. Much appreciation and thanks also goes to Willie, a local in the area, for coming on the scene with his tractor when difficulty arose due to high winds, when trying to get the boat out of the water.
Cahir Dive Club members will be seen taking part in the Clonmel River Fest, the “Tractor Tyre Tube Race” on Saturday 11th July. Two teams from the club are entered, The Blue Hole Divers and The Mugards Bay Divers. Make sure to come and cheer them along!

DEFIBRILLATORS
Chairman of the Cahir Area Defibrillator Group, Cllr Seanie Lonergan, is pleased to announce the placement of another lifesaving machine in the town of Cahir. The latest set was installed in Enzos Take Away on Abbey Street, the group wishes to thank Enzo and his staff for their help and permission in allowing their premises to service that side of town. This weekend also saw a further defibrillator placed in the Square of Cahir, for public access. Cahir House Hotel will hold the key and the telephone numbers to this defibrillator. Thanks go to Frank Walsh and company for the vandal proof stainless steel cabinet. Frank, of Cahir Steel and Agri. has been a fantastic supporter of the group since its inception. Cllr Seanie wishes to thank all the donors for their goodwill.

ALLOTMENTS?
Cllr Seanie Lonergan has contacted a landowner with a view to renting plots or allotments. The land is one and a half miles outside Cahir. This is an excellent idea for people that wish to grow their own veg., etc. Before any work takes place on the land, Seanie would like to see how much interest there is in the venture. The allotments would be in the region of €250 per year per plot and would be serviced with water and a communal toilet. This is not a new idea in this country but the present fiscal climate demands the return to the “grow your own “attitude. Feel free to contact Cllr Lonergan and express your interest or opinion.

You can put me down for on the list Seanie, it’s a great idea.

CAHIR U12S RETAIN COUNTY TITLE
On the lovely sunny evening of Monday 15th June, Cahir U12s ladies football team travelled to Monroe to take on Commercials in the U12A County Final. Cahir, having had impressive wins in the group stages, travelled as favourites and they lived up to it. They started strongly with a good goal and a point before Commercials raised the white flag. Cahir were dominating all over the field with very little passing the half back line of Grainne Quirke, Aisling Moloney and Katie Farrell. The score at half time read 2-4 to 1 point.
The second half began with 2 quick points for Cahir. Keely Halpin in goal and our full back line of Aoife Collins, Carol Casey and Roisin Costigan saw very little ball but dealt with whatever came their way. Commercials goalkeeper Jemma McCarthy did extremely well in goal making some fine saves, but could do nothing to stop the bombardment near the end. Our half forward line of Eadaoin O’Gorman, Roisin Howard and Rachel Hannigan were in fine form. Aoife Corcoran and Kerri Purtill controlled midfield. The fall forward line of Lorraine Doyle and Roisin O’Donnell who finished with a score of 3-1 and Andrea Moloney played their hearts out.
We have a large panel of players who all played their part at some stage during the year. They were Laura Casey, Megan Word, Dervla Buckley, Kirsty Arbuckle, Niamh Murphy, Roisin McCarthy, Emma Quirke, Rachel O’Donnell, Andrea O’Donnell, Sarah Burke, Shauna Burke, Hillary Gregson and Norah Sulllivan. Cahir finished with an impressive win on a score of 7-9 to 1 point. Well done to Commercials who held their heads up and played to the final whistle. Our joint Captains Keely Halpin and Roisin Costigan gladly accepted the Shield with delight.
Thank you to all the parents who helped during the year with training and driving to matches. Well done to all involved.

SCHOOL WEBSITE ADDRESS
The Cahir Boys National School website address is http://cahirboys.blogspot.com Its important to put in the http:// section in as it is not on the open web. I try to keep it up to date, as it is a good source of information for anyone seeking to look at the schools activities during the year and photos of events too. Why not check it out during the summer.

CAHIR BOYS SCHOOL IN FINALS OF XPERIENCE ENGINEERING COMPETITION

The ‘Xperience Engineering’ competition is organised by Engineers Ireland and its aim is to promote engineering in primary schools. The theme of this year’s project was ‘Engineers Save Lives’. The boys in 6th class chose to look at Lifebuoys for their project as they felt that in a town like Cahir Lifebuoys can help save lives.

The project began by researching Personal Flotation Devices and in particular Lifebuoys. A number of classroom experiments were then carried out to examine floating and sinking and to explain why certain materials float while others don’t. The boys then completed a site visit to The Mall in Cahir where they met Brendan O’Dwyer, the South Tipperary Water Safety Officer. Brendan spoke to the boys about the location of the lifebuoys in Cahir and the materials they are made from. He also talked to them about the correct way to throw a lifebuoy and the importance of looking after the lifebuoys in our community.

The project also involved a classroom visit by Mr. John Sheehan from the Cahir River Rescue Unit. John is also a member of the Cahir Dive Club. He showed the boys the equipment used by the River Rescue Unit and by the Divers.

We would like to thank both Brendan O’Dwyer and John Sheehan for their help during this project.

A large focus of the project is on the engineering skills of the children. The boys took part in the ‘K’Nex Challenge’ where they had to design a lifebuoy and use K’Nex to make their design. The boys completed a second engineering project to design, make and present a lifebuoy in class using everyday materials. The standard of the lifebuoys they produced was very high and each lifebuoy was tested to ensure it would float!

As part of the project the boys also produced a Water Safety DVD entitled ‘Lifebuoys in Cahir’ for the school. This DVD focuses on the location of the lifebuoys in Cahir town and has water safety tips which are particularly important for this time of year. The DVD also stresses the importance of looking after the lifebuoys.

All the above aspects of the project were recorded and photographed and entered into the competition. The boy’s hard work paid off when they were announced as one of the 20 finalists in the 5th/6th class category. Four boys were chosen to represent the class at the National Final; John Casey and Evan Purtill presented and explained the project to the judges and Sean Sweeney and Stephen O’Donoghue took part in The K’Nex Challenge, to build a robot.

On the day of the Final the boys did an excellent job and it was a great experience to be part of the final. Within the school the project has helped raise the awareness of the children as to the location, function and importance of the lifebuoys in the community.
