CAHIR NOTES 15th JULY
BALLOON TRIPS!!!!
Cahir Tidy Towns & Environment Committee will hold a draw for the Balloon Trips that will be held in Duneske on Sunday August 2nd. In an effort to highlight our awareness of Tidy Towns we hope that people will support this very novel idea and we have now teamed up with Duneske Leisure who will hold a Family Day and BBQ to coincide with the occasion. Chairman Andy Moloney has said that we have to build on the progress of last year, and that in these recessionary times people could afford some time each week to tidy outside their own door. With everyone working together we can continue to improve the town visually and enhance our locality.
Tickets for the Balloon Trips can be bought in most shops and also at the Enterprise Centre in the Market yard. We will also help to accommodate anyone who wishes to bypass the raffle procedure and pay separately, but this would have to be booked soon as there will be a limited supply. This can also be done at the Enterprise Centre.
FAMILY FUNDAY
On 2nd August, Duneske will be holding a Family Funday in the Leisure Centre – a day for all the family. On the day it is hoped that all Clubs, Residents Associations and Community Groups will come together to provide a wide range of entertainment .The day’s activities will start on the River when we see the return of the ever popular Crazy Boat Race. Always popular with everyone, the Race has a free entry and the entry forms and rules are available from the Enterprise Centre – (052)7442616. When all contestants eventually drag themselves from the River, there will be a parade leading everyone up to Duneske, where in addition to all the side shows and other activities, there will be musical entertainment and a barbeque.
Running in conjunction with the Funday will be a raffle for places on a Hot Air Balloon Trip. Tickets will cost €5 each and can be purchased at pubs, shops and other outlets between now and the 2nd August and will determine the lucky 16 people that will win this trip of a lifetime. This raffle is being run by the Cahir Tidy Towns Committee in an effort to gain greater exposure for the efforts of the group.
Any group or individual who feel that they can contribute to an enjoyable Sunday Funday should please contact the Enterprise Centre as soon as possible. It may offer your group and opportunity to raise a few bob.
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS EXTEND CLOSING DATE?
Cahir Tidy Towns and Environment Committee have extended the deadline for entries into this year’s Enhancement Competition. Chairman Andy Moloney felt that there should have been a better response to the competition following the town’s terrific achievements last year at a National Level and also from the local awards night in Cahir Castle. The committee are seeking €5 per entry this year to ensure that everyone that enters will be judged and have a chance of winning a prize. Super Valu have come on board again this year as the main sponsor. The new closing date is Friday evening the 17th July and forms can be obtained from the Council Office or by ringing 052-74442332.
Andy also explains that the Hot Air Balloon flights will go ahead in Duneske on Sunday 2nd August as a promotional exercise for Tidy Towns and Environment and will be held in conjunction with the Duneske BBQ and Family Day. Tickets are on sale for flights on the Balloon in all local establishments. These activities along with the Crazy boat Race will add to the enjoyment of the Bank Holiday weekend.

DEFIBRILLATORS?
Cllr. Seanie Lonergan Chairman of the Defibrillator Group has given me the locations of the Defibrillators in Cahir town. Enzo’s Takeaway on Abbey Street, Morrison’s Chemist, the Doctors Surgery, Cahir Park Golf Club, Duneske leisure Centre, Cahir Day-care Centre and there is a set in the Square on the Library wall. There are also Defibrillators in Ballylooby, Burncourt, Clogheen, Ardfinnan and New Inn. Seanie has appealed to all sports clubs and factories to purchase their own machines in the interest of saving lives. Thanks Seanie, I have heard that one in Cahir already saved a life, keep up the good work.
CAHIR PARK SOCCER
The new Clubhouse is well underway; the foundations were poured last Friday. The 5000 sq ft building is ECO friendly and is a Cedarwood Structure. The Centenary committee held a meeting in the Shamrock Lounge to organise and discuss upcoming events. They are still on the lookout for old Cahir Park photos and such like, should you have any, you can contact any member of Cahir Park soccer. The Club will be a hundred years in existence next year and there is a host of events organised for the whole year. Funds are much needed and anyone with any fundraising ideas is most welcome at meetings. The next meeting is in the Shamrock Lounge on the 24th July at 8.30pm.
HERITAGE TREES IN SOUTH TIPPERARY
A survey of the Heritage Trees of Ireland is being undertaken for the Tree Council of Ireland in association with Crann and the Irish Tree Society. A heritage tree may be defined as a tree of biological, cultural, ecological or historical interest because of its age, size or condition. The project is being undertaken as an extension of the Tree Register of Ireland which is a record of Ireland’s champion trees. We are appealing to as many people as possible to tell us about their trees!
We want to hear about giant, important, mysterious, sacred, historical, fabulous, bizarre-looking or ancient trees, and generally trees with a story! There are all sorts of trees that would qualify for inclusion, for example: rag trees; hanging trees; military trees (planted in military formation to commemorate battles); those of exceptional girth, height or age; any associated with historical events, people or structures; and those which are important to a community.
We want our heritage and ancient trees to survive as long as possible and to do this we need to protect them. The only way we can do this is to know where they are. We need to find them, map them, photograph them and record them. For further info please see the Tree Council’s website:http://www.treecouncil.ie/tree_council_heritage_tree_hunt.htm
Please contact Kate Crane at cranoggin@eircom.net or 087 821 4817 or call Aubrey Fennell on 087 620 3906 to tell them about a heritage tree in your area.
DINING DEALS
In the present thrifty atmosphere, the Management of Cahir House Hotel has come up with one or two new ideas and even more accessible pricing. The most interesting, perhaps, is the Evening Dining Deal, offering a choice from two starters, two mains and two desserts, with tea or coffee, at only €18.95. Not only that, but you can take your own wine, without corkage fees (BYO). I imagine there will be a limit to this - if a party of fifteen each took a bottle - ?!
The Bistro Specials include a really great value lunch - main course plus soup or dessert - for €13.95.
Something that should appeal to many sports fans is the ability to watch sporting events on their big screens or in the Beer Garden, with complimentary finger food.

May we thank Bob Condon and all the committee for the hard work and organising of this popular event. The meal was of the highest standard, and the quality of service was excellent. The catering was carried out by our local caterer from Newcastle Eily Condon, may we all sing our praises to Eily and her staff. Music and entertainment was provided by Stefan Grace and Tony O Dwyer. Many of the guests made their contribution and sang various songs. As the sun was setting we made our way home happy and content after a pleasant evening with our friends. CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES?
Cahir Camogie club represented Tipperary at this year’s Community Games Final (Munster) in Limerick's UL on Saturday last. In the semi final they had a comprehensive win over Clare's Sixmilebridge with a score line of 8-3 to 2-1 - the scores coming from Roisin Howard, Clara O' Donnell, Ashling Moloney and Emma Corcoran. The final between Cahir and Douglas of Cork was an absorbing contest played in a downpour for the first ten minutes Douglas lay siege to Cahirs goal but super saves from goalie Sadhbh O' Donnell and great defensive work from Emma Corcoran, Emma Buckley Carl Casey and Lorna McEniry kept them at bay and limited Douglas to scoring only 3 points. The rest of the half was all Cahir thanks to the hardworking midfield of Alina Neumerxkitsky, Ashling McCarthy and Aofe Corcoran who got great ball into the forwards where Roisin Howard showed her class by scoring 2-1. An injury to Emma Corcoran forced Cahir to rejig their team moving Emma to the forwards where she finished the half with a great point on the run. At half time Cahir led 2-2 to 0-4. Cahir battled bravely in the second half to hold their lead with great defensive work from the stick of Ashling Moloney, but a bigger and stronger Douglas hit back scoring 2-3. However, back came Cahir and scored 2-3 through, Ashling Moloney and Ashling McCarthy helped on the hardworking Clara O Donnell. The game finished in defeat for Cahir by a single point but the team can be proud of their brave, wholehearted display against the best U14 team in Ireland. (Douglas won Div 1 of Feile a few weeks ago). Mention must also go to Roisin Costigan, Joye Arbuckle and Eadaoinn O Gorman who also contributed to what was a great display of Camogie by Cahir Final score 3-6 to 3-5Scorers: R. Howard 2-1 A Moloney 1-2 E Corcoran 0-1 and A McCarthy 0-1. Many thanks to all who came to support the team and to Martin O' Keeffe who organised a most welcome bite to eat for the war weary soldiers on their way home. A small reminder to all the older players who have not yet paid their membership - could you please do so as soon as possible as the club will be forced not to play unpaid members in official games. Also we are hoping to collect €2 from all players and members for tickets that we are obliged to sell for Munster Council. We will have a draw amongst all those who contribute their €2 for a special
prize.
