CAHIR NOTES 22nd JULY
FUNDAY POSTPONED!!!!
The Funday that was planned for 2nd August in Duneske, has been postponed until 30th August. This is due to the fact that although there was some response from Clubs and Associations to get involved with the Funday, unfortunately it was nowhere near what would be required to hold a Funday with sufficient entertainment and activities for the expected crowd. So in the hope that there will be a better response this time, Cahir Development Association are once again putting out the call to all local Groups, Clubs, Associations etc., to get involved in providing activities and entertainment(no matter how small) on the day and while doing so perhaps raise a few euro for your group/club. There are some fantastic groups out there that could do this and that have the manpower too. There are so many events happening in different towns at the moment and these are all down to communities pulling together and making a real effort.
The new date for the Funday has been set for 30th August, so as to give everyone a chance to plan their activity/entertainment, even though some groups/ clubs have broken up for the summer, still it may be very worthwhile to get together for this. There will have to be a deadline as we will have to meet and discuss who wants to do what and also to organise insurance for the event. The deadline for this is 7th August. So call the Enterprise Centre anytime on 052 7442616 or even drop in and leave the name of your Club/Group/Association and we will call you back to confirm. This is something that requires community effort and community spirit and Cahir has plenty of that. So get involved and hopefully together we can organise a Funday to remember.
HERITAGE GRANTS?
Cllr. Seanie Lonergan has applied for grants from the Heritage Council for the improvement of Tobair Iosa in Cahir and Lafford’s Forge in Ballylooby. The Councillor is assured that these two projects will be given attention in September. Local people are delighted that the sacred site of the Holy Well will not be forgotten. Seanie paid tribute to Frank Hogan and others for all the care that they have put in over the years.
ALLOTMENTS
There is a lot of interest in allotments all over the country and not the least in Cahir. Cllr. Seanie Lonergan and the landowner that is prepared to rent out land for allotments travelled to Co. Limerick to look at existing plots and were very impressed with what they learned. South Tipperary County Council will have to look kindly on people that are interested in starting these ventures. So contact Seanie should you have an interest in growing Fruit, Flowers or vegetables in your spare time. Gardening is not only good for mind and body, but it is also very satisfying to harvest and eat your own fresh fruit and vegetables.

IRWINS YARD
I popped in to Irwin’s last week with my sister and my mum to check out the new Lunch Menu. First of all I was very pleased with the menu itself as it offered plenty of healthy and hearty choices without being too fussy and long. My mum opted for a bowl of Beef stew which was accompanied by either brown/white bread and I must say that it was very tasty indeed. My sister and I ordered soup and sandwiches. The soup of the day was vegetable and it was delicious, the chicken sandwiches were reminiscent of the old “Crock of Gold” chicken sandwiches, jam packed with the freshest cooked chicken. All of this washed down with a lovely pot of tea, which held enough for a second cup (I do love my tea). The prices are also very good, for soup, sandwiches and a pot of tea I had change from €9. I can certainly recommend Irwin’s for a wholesome, inexpensive lunch.

AN EVENING OF CELEBRATION IN ADULT EDUCATION
A lovely, fun filled, evening was had by all who attended the recent “Certificate Presentation” evening in Cahir House Hotel for all the ECDL students of Cahir Business & Training Centre.
Recently elected Cahir area Councillor, Marie Murphy presented certificates to nearly a hundred students, and was able to identify with the recipients celebrations as only last year she had collected her own ECDL certification with Cahir Business & Training Centre.

“Laura Sweeney receiving her ECDL Expert Certification from Councilor Marie Murphy and Helen Quirke, Centre Manager”
Helen Quirke, the centre manger gave an interesting presentation on their achievements throughout the year and how Cahir Business & Training Centre is part of the overall Cahir Development Association Organisation which has brought several community projects to Cahir including Duneske Leisure Centre and The Cahir Bears Childcare Centre.

“Students from the 2009 FAS Return to Work Course",
Back row L/R Jana Proskova, Aoife Duggan, Stacey O’Brien, Jenny Hutton, Lisa Marie O’Keeffe, Megan Foskitt and Laura Sweeney,
Front row L/R Edward Fogarty, Alan Joyce,Tutor and Helen Quirke, Manager
Included this evening were students from the very successful FAS funded “Return to Work” programme which includes ECDL, book keeping/payroll , job seeking skills and personal development enabling participants a stronger application in the jobs market. This particular programme is a very popular and successful course and would not be possible without the continued support of the FAS.

“Some of the participants of the “Digital Photography” group showing their work”
Also present on the evening were participants from the newly introduced “Digital Photography” courses and an exhibition of their photographs were on display. With over forty wonderful photographs ranging from portraits to landscapes, still life to study shots everyone really enjoyed the exhibition and all agreed the standard of photography was outstanding.
Well done to everybody and we look forward to repeating such a wonderful evening next year.
CAMOGIE NOTES?
The U14 team were back in action this week in the first game of the League. We played host to Clonoulty who travelled down on Monday night to Duneske for a 7pm throw in.
Under a bit of pressure from a strong enough opposition as well as being short some of our more experienced players through holidays and injuries, this proved to be a challenging game. We saw some fine work from the panel throughout the game in particular from Carl Casey at wing back, Kirsty Downey at centre and some fine saves from goalie Sadhbh O Donnell. A goal from the ever improving Joye Arbuckle added to the teams tally to ensure a 4 point victory for the Cahir side. Friday night saw the U12.s out in the A League against Toomevara who also made the journey to Duneske. Again this proved to be another entertaining game to watch which saw much improvement from Grainne Quirke and Eileen Flannery in the forwards while Aoife Corcoran worked tremendously hard all through the game ensuring another victory for this young side with a score line of Cahir 1-7 Toomevara 2-0.
Fixtures for the coming week: U12’s will travel to Drom on Thursday evening for a 7pm start while U14's take on Brian Borus in an away game on Monday evening next.
Well done to all who took part in last week's GAA camp which once again proved to be an outstanding success and a reminder to all that lost property can be collected by contacting any of the club officials.

4 THINGS YOU PROBABLY NEVER KNEW YOUR MOBILE PHONE COULD DO
Number 3
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. If your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it, can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.
TRIP TO SCARBOROUGH
Just a reminder to anyone interested in travelling to Scarborough from 9th October to 12th October please make contact with Tim at (086)0432288. Presently there is very good value with a return flight from as little as €57 each. A non refundable deposit of €100 each will secure your place on this very enjoyable trip. When we determine numbers travelling, we will be able to negotiate a favourable rate for accommodation from one of Scarborough’s many fine Hotels. So get your names in as quickly as possible.
DICK DOYLE EXHIBITION
Another reminder is that this is the final week of the latest exhibition by self taught Cahir Photographer Dick Doyle. It is on show in the Craft Granary, Church Street, Cahir. Titled “Contre-Jour Landscapes “the landscapes featured include many sunrises and sunsets in local areas such as the Galtees, Nire Valley, The Vee and coastal areas near Dungarvan, The exhibition finishes on 29th of July and is worth checking out.
CONDOLANCES
Sympathies are extended to Teresa Tizard and family on the death of Teresa’s husband Jim Tizard who passed away last week. He will be sadly missed by all his neighbours in Abbey Crescent.
CAHIR COUNTRY MARKETS
The ladies at the folks at the Country Market are very busy at the moment. Last week they had a stall in the Clonmel Show, they will have a stall in the National Sheepdog Trials in Burncourt on 1st August and they will also have a stall in the Bansha Show later on that month. Just goes to show that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to Cahir Country Markets. There is so much on offer from home baked breads, cakes, pies and buns ( don’t forget some of these are made in the traditional Egyptian style by Merfat )Beautiful handmade arts and crafts, fresh eggs and honey, fresh and dried flower arrangements and of course a wonderful selection of fresh vegetables and plants. Most importantly because all of their produce is made at home, it is reflected in the very competitive prices This Friday 24th July is a Cake Sampling Day, with a delicious selection of cakes for all to sample. So why not come down to the Country Markets in the Community Hall between 9-11am and try some of the lovely cakes that I’m always raving about.
CONGRATULATIONS
Belated Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary to Liam & Nancy Simpson who celebrated in style with a wonderful buffet and evening of celebration in Ballykisteen Hotel on Friday 17th July. May you have many more happy years together.
CAMOGIE NOTES EXTRA?
Our Junior team lined out on Sunday last in Duneske against Borrisoleigh. Unfortunately due to lack of commitment from some players, the management found it almost impossible to field a team. With help from the younger players they eventually managed to get 15 girls on the pitch and those who did play made a gallant effort against a much stronger Borrisoleigh side. Great credit is due to all who gave of their time last Sunday morning and we saw some great play especially from goalie Aoife O Gorman who brought off some lovely saves. With a final score line of Borrisoleigh 3-11 to Cahir's 2-5 we can only hope that we will see all the panel back in training on Wednesday night next and also that they will give the management some form of commitment if the club is to keep playing in this competition.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Belated Happy 3rd Birthday wishes go to Abbie Collins, who celebrated her birthday on 17th July. With love from Mum, Dad, Brendan and all your family.
QUOTE FOR THE WEEK
There are two kinds of people, those that do the work and those that take the credit. Try to be in the first group, there is less competition there.
