CAHIR NOTES 5th AUGUST
ALDI STORE FOR CAHIR?
Cllr.Seanie Lonergan is very pleased with the decision of An Bord Planeala to grant permission to Aldi to open a store in Cahir. The Councillor led a petition recently and was amazed with the overwhelming response. The proposed store will be in the old Devereaux site in Abbey Street. When it opens, Seanie has been assured that there will be 25 people employed there and in the uncertain economic times that we now live in, this is a bonus for the town. The Cllr. adds that there are many people that travel to Clonmel just to shop in Aldi, these are the people he now hopes will stay and shop local in Cahir.

CAHIR TIDY TOWNS:
A second round of judging in the Tidy Towns competition will take place in August. It would be a great help if everyone kept their own area looking as good as possible. Another blitz clean-up litter collection will take place next weekend, and also the next Monday, August 10th. We ask everyone to give some help in cleaning up their own estate or street. Bags can be left in a central point, i.e. end of street or edge of a green for collection on Tuesday, August 11th. The distinctive tidy towns yellow bags can be obtained from the local county council offices at Erasmus Smith House on Church Street, also available are litter pickers and gloves. The next meeting of Cahir Tidy Towns group will take place on the first Wednesday in September, in The Shamrock Lounge.
CAHIR VISITOR GUIDE
Since the launch of the Cahir visitor guide last Thursday night at The River House, already visitors have been spotted walking around town referring to all the things to see and do in the area. One of the things that really set’s this guide apart from other town guides is the quality of the graphic design and photography which was done by local man Brendan Davis. Brendan's number one hobby for over 40 years has been photography. He gained his valuable experience of promotion whilst working as a Marketing Manager for an American electronics company that he was with for 27 years. Since moving to Cahir 11 years ago, he has been involved in print and web design. If the saying that "a picture paints a thousand words" is true, then the Cahir Visitor Guide is off to a great start.
The photography certainly is beautiful. Well done Brendan.

CAHIR DAY CARE CENTRE.
Tuesday 28th July proved to be a very special day at the centre, as we celebrated yet another successful year. We can say special because we had 75 members and guests in attendance. Stefan Grace, Tony O Dwyer and Ashling Purtel, set a great party mood with some well loved music and songs. This is the first time I have heard Ashling sing and like all in attendance was overwhelmed by her captivating voice. Well done Ashling we look forward to hearing you again. After a delightful lunch expertly prepared and served by cheerful members of the staff, we were entertained by the ever popular group of musicians “The Sunset Sound”.
The Jewellery Course is now finished and prizes have been presented. The first prize was sponsored by John Quirke Jewellers and was won by Ellen Marnane, second and third prize was sponsored by Breeda Burke. Second prize won by Ellen Marnane, third prize won by Nellie Burke. Needless to say the standard proved to be extremely high, and judging was a very difficult task.
The Day Care centre will close for the annual break Friday 31st July 2009, and reopen Tuesday 1st September 2009. May we wish everyone a very happy and enjoyable summer break and we look forward to seeing you all again in the autumn. Many thanks to Lil Davis, the staff and members of the public their contributions that make the centre a relaxing and sociable meeting place. We are indeed blessed to have such amenities on our doorstep.

TASKS IN THE FLOWER GARDEN FOR AUGUST.
Watering container plants, ensure containerised plants especially evergreens, never go short of water during the summer while they're developing their flower buds for next spring's display. A shortage of water now can lead to a case of bud drop next year for plants, such as camellias and rhododendrons. Pots that have dried out should be submerged in water and left to soak for a few hours, ideally in a bowl, bath or water-butt. Even if it rains, pots often remain dry as they stand in the rain shadow of a house and their foliage acts as an umbrella. Supporting plants, Support the stems of tall perennials and lilies with bamboo canes and watch out for lily beetles and their larvae. Pick any off and destroy them immediately. Deadheading, deadhead roses as the blooms fade, cutting off the flowers just above the uppermost leaf on the stem. Trim back lavender bushes after flowering to remove the old blooms and shoot tips. Take care not to cut back too heavily into any old wood. Removing faded flowers from perennials and annual plants will also ensure a continued display of blooms. Dried flowers, cut everlasting flowers, such as helichrysum and achillea, and grasses, such as pennisetum, when they are at their peak. Hang them upside down in a warm, airy position to dry naturally, ready for decorative arrangements. Prune wisteria, summer prune wisteria this month, shortening their long wispy side shoots back to about five or six leaves from the main framework. If the plant's flowering performance was poor last spring, drench the soil with a high-potash fertiliser for an improvement. Clematis, Clematis thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade, but make sure the roots and base of plants are in the shade to keep them healthy. Blackened shoot tips may indicate clematis wilt. Cut out affected stems, but leave the main pruning until late winter and early spring.

LIVE MUSIC!
I had the chance to visit Irwins Yard last Sunday where Johnny B and the Boogie Band were playing. Unfortunately the weather was too bad for them to play in the Yard but the reaction from the enthusiastic crowd said it all. Johnny B O’Brien the lead singer and guitarist has a great voice range, while the combination of Tommy Buckley playing some mean lead guitar and singing backing vocals, Hamish Brewster playing impressive bass and Obie Kelly keeping the pulses racing on drums, the place rocked right to the end. Their varied set list kept everyone dancing and singing along (including me!) and I think everyone would have been happy if they played all night! All of these talented guys are local too. While I must admit to loving dance music, you just can’t beat a good live band. Well done to you all, I think I speak for everyone when I say bring on the next gig!
