CAHIR NOTES 12TH AUGUST
CAHIR ANGLER TO REPRESENT IRELAND
Local angler John Burke has been chosen to represent Ireland in the forthcoming European Fly fishing Competition at the Killarney Lakes this year. This is a great achievement for both John and the Cahir Angling Club. The Competition this year has entries from 22 European countries, the most countries to compete to date. The week long competition is split into 2 categories, with some competitor’s lake fishing and other competitor’s river fishing. John Burke will be competing in the river fishing category.
One rather surprising bit of information is that this sport is not funded in any way and competitors are expected to pay their competition fees and costs out of their own pockets. It seems to me that when Irish Trophies/Medals are few and far between, perhaps, in the future we should look to get angling competitors funded. And although John Burke has committed himself to competing this year, it may be that some fundraising might be necessary, so watch this space and when the time comes, give your support to our local Angling Ace.
And the very best of luck to you John.
TIDY TOWNS NEWS
Andy Moloney, Chairman of Cahir Tidy Towns sent me the following;
I met with some Irish tourists that were on holiday in Co Kerry at the weekend and on their journey down they couldn’t help but comment on how well the Town of Cahir looked when passing. They decided to stop and have lunch in one of the Hostelries locally and then made their way. Still impressed by the Town in general, they decided to book into a local B&B and use Cahir as a half way stop for their journey home.
It is in my view that the prettier and more attractive a town and its surrounds look, then the better it is for business. The tidiness of the Town is as a result of hard work by the local volunteers in Tidy Towns and the co-operation of the Council and it is only when you meet people like these two mentioned holidaymakers, that we have the courage to continue.
So Tidy Towns Volunteers, (most of which have no business affiliation in Town) and Council staff, take a bow, your hard work is appreciated.
I totally agree with you Andy.
DINING DEALS
In the present thrifty atmosphere, the Management of Cahir House Hotel has come up with one or two new ideas and even more accessible pricing. The most interesting, perhaps, is the Evening Dining Deal, offering a choice from two starters, two mains and two desserts, with tea or coffee, at only €18.95. Not only that, but you can take your own wine, without corkage fees (BYO). I imagine there will be a limit to this - if a party of fifteen each took a bottle - ?!
The Bistro Specials include a really great value lunch - main course plus soup or dessert - for €13.95.
Something that should appeal to many sports fans is the ability to watch sporting events on their big screens or in the Beer Garden, with complimentary finger food.

TASKS IN THE GARDEN FOR AUGUST.
General care; holiday watering; There are several things you can do to help prevent plants drying out. Move any baskets and containers out of full sun to a position where they are shaded at the height of the day. Stand terracotta pots on gravel trays topped up with water, so the pots can gradually absorb the reservoir of liquid. You can also install an automatic trickle watering system on an outside tap, which is controlled by a timer and will turn water on and off each day. Take Cuttings; continue taking summer cuttings of fuchsias, pelargonium’s and tender perennials. These root quickly at this time of year, forming sturdy young plants that will successfully overwinter on a bedroom windowsill. Many houseplants, including coleus and African violets, can also be propagated from cuttings now. Trim hedges, especially hedging conifers that can become tall and annoy neighbours. Be considerate, and cut their tops down to 3m (10ft) at a maximum. Pests; watch out for ants nesting in patio pots, where they can disturb root growth and reduce a plant's performance. Standing pots in a large saucer of water helps deter them from settling in. Vine weevil is a particular problem in greenhouses and patio pots. Now is a good time to treat compost with biological pest control nematodes, which search out and kill weevil larvae. They can also be applied to the soil around attacked plants. Lawns; to achieve a fine finish, cut your lawns more than once a week. Spot treat and dig out weeds, filling holes with gritty compost, and rake a little grass seed into bare patches if necessary. In hot, dry weather, keep grass longer by setting the mower blades higher. Weeds; hoe weeds out of gravel paths, then carefully apply a residual path weed killer to keep the area weed-free. Pond care; top up the sunken water-levels in garden ponds. Bulbs; order spring-flowering bulbs from mail-order suppliers ready for autumn planting.
Biodiversity of South Tipperary -HAVE YOUR SAY.
Biodiversity is short for ‘biological diversity’ and means the variety of all living things on earth, including all plants, animals and micro-organisms. Some other words that are used to describe biodiversity include: flora and fauna; wildlife; habitats; ecosystems; ecology, natural heritage or nature. It is the basis for all life and helps sustain us by providing food, pollination, medicines, raw materials, clean air and water, and beautiful countryside.
South Tipperary County Council Heritage Office is drawing up a Biodiversity Action Plan and need your input to make it work. The five-year plan will include an overview of biodiversity in the county and actions to help look after it. You can help by giving feedback on a form that can be obtained by emailing or phoning Biodiversity Action Plan facilitator, Ms. Mieke Muyllaert, mieke@eircom.net - 052-6127930.

NEW ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SHOP
I popped in to see the Ladies in the new shop in Abbey Street last week to see how they are settling in. I was amazed at the floor space and rail and shelf space too. There is now a room solely dedicated to furniture, which is very good, as in the other shop you had to make your way carefully around any furniture and said furniture also sometimes blocked access to the shelves. There is also a spacious toilet, changing room, a brand new kitchen for the ladies to have their lunch in and lastly there is plenty of much needed storage space upstairs. All in all it is a lovely premise’s that is both bright and cheery. Congratulations to the ladies on the new shop and also for sorting all the goods out so quickly.
STUART MANGAN
I was saddened to hear of the death of Stuart Mangan, the 25 year old rugby player from Fermoy in Co. Cork. Stuart was a talented rugby player who was paralysed after severing his spinal cord while playing a match for his club Hammersmith and Fulham last year.
Many Rugby stars such as Ronan O’Gara and Paul O’Connell were inspired by Stuart’s bravery in the face of such adversity and many fundraisers were held all over the country in his aid. After 16 months of courage, Stuart’s battle is now over and I hope you will all join me in sending sincerest condolences to Stuart’s family in their time of grief.
Rest in peace Stuart.
GAELIGE, IRISH CLASSES
Irish classes for adult beginners or revisers will be held in Cahir, in the old V.E.C building on Church Street, in September. For enquiries please call Marie Ui Chathain on 087 2782071. Early booking is advised.
MOBILE MAGIC
You know how sometimes you just want to leave a voice message on someone’s mobile phone, rather than disturb them or send them a text (many people I know have never gotten the hang of texting) Just put a 5 after the prefix of all 085, 086, 087 or 089 numbers and it will go straight to voicemail, where you can leave your message without the receiving phone even ringing. So, for example you can dial 086 5 or 087 5 etc., and then the rest of the number. I tried this on all of the mentioned phone prefixes and it worked every time.
Inaccurate Information
Recently I put a piece in the notes about ATM reversal, where, if in time of duress (e.g. someone was making you withdraw money from your account with intent to steal from you)you entered the pin number of your ATM card in reverse, the gardai would be alerted to your location. Unfortunately, although this information came from a very reputable source (Crimecall UK) after some research, I have discovered that this is not so. The origins of this system were first imagined by Joseph Zingher, a Chicago businessman in 1998. The SafetyPin system he proposed would alert police that a crime was in progress when a cardholder at an ATM keyed in his pin number in reverse. The backwards pin would serve as a panic code to notify police that an ATM customer was acting under duress.
Because palindromic pin numbers (e.g. 2002, 7337, 4884 etc) cannot be reversed, Zinghers system included work commands for such numeric combinations. However, Zingher had little success in interesting the banking community in SafetyPin. Despite pitching SafetyPin with great persistence over the years, to date he has not succeeded in interesting the banking community in the technology.
Seems like a shame to me, surely in this day and age a system like that would be a godsend. Still, it’s food for thought eh?
