CAHIR NOTES 19TH AUGUST

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION UPDATE
The C.D.A would like inform everyone that it is at present taking stock of the enquiries for participation in the Funday Sunday, which is rescheduled to take place in Duneske on 30th August. We will let you know what is happening in next week’s notes.
On a different note, after this year’s AGM, we identified a serious problem that the organisation has when it comes to recruiting new members. Most people think that the C.D.A is a closed shop – which we most definitely are not. And most people do not know what we do, so we put together a subcommittee to handle this problem and build the profile of the organisation.
When we sat down to discuss it, we speculated that a number of other voluntary organisations have not been advising the public of their success stories either. So we asked ourselves the question – ‘How do we let the public know of the achievements of the many hard working voluntary bodies that are operating in Cahir?’
Working on the premise that a picture tells a thousand stories, we believe that a photographic exhibition reflecting on 50 years of voluntary activity in Cahir would be a great way to tell all our stories. So with this in mind, we have approached Cahir House Hotel who are willing to give us the use of their ballroom FREE OF CHARGE on Sunday 18th October 2009 to exhibit our photos. We will be extending an invitation to all organisations to participate in this event, which will offer a fantastic opportunity to show what your organisation is doing within and for Cahir. So get ready to dig out your photos!

CAHIR TIDY TOWNS
The judging for the Cahir Tidy Towns Enhancement Awards took place last Thursday and Friday; the competition is kindly sponsored by Dolan’s Super Valu. Only those that have registered their entry were judged and marked. The awards night will take place in September. The town is looking very well at the moment and we encourage all residents to give a sweep outside their area and give a good impression to those visiting the town. The clean up blitz for August is the last Thursday of the month which is the 27th and bags can be collected at the council office and will be collected on the Friday morning. Any new estates or volunteers wanting to beautify their area should contact the county council office at Erasmus Smith House (052-7468900) for their bags and organize to have them collected on Friday 28th August.

CAHIR PARK AFC SPECIAL VISITORS
Cahir Park were delighted to have none other than Ray Houghton, Packie Bonner and FAI Ceo, John Delaney call in for a visit last week. They were invited by Anthony O’Gorman to come down and meet Club Officials and players, watch a bit of training and take a look at the well kept grounds. John Delaney is no stranger to Cahir Park, having played there many times during his football years and also living just up the road in Tipperary. In fact, John turned the sod for the new clubhouse only last May.
They were all present as part of “The Trip to Tipp “of Giovanni Trapattoni (ROI Manager) and the Republic of Ireland team who were training in Cooke Park, Tipperary, in preparation for their friendly against Australia on Wednesday last. They took a walk around the park before talking to the players present of the importance of clubs at local level and also of their own experiences, each one praising Cahir Park and the Club Officials. They happily posed for photos and signed autographs for the fans (me included!). John Delaney promised that they will definitely make a return visit for the clubs centenary year (2010) and check out the new Clubhouse.

ROAD TAR CAN KILL?

Just a word of warning to motorcyclists mainly, but anyone can take it on board. As the weather is getting worse, motorcyclists should be aware of smooth tar. The roads are getting patched up in different sized squares, which is better than meeting pot holes. However, the edges of these squares are sealed with tar about 3 inches wide. The problem is motorcycle tyres only have contact with the road with about 2 or 3 inches of rubber. Once the tyre hits the wet smooth tar the bike goes into a slide. This could be fatal!! Now to the experienced rider it’s scary but manageable, but could still result in a fall. To the novice, depending on the action he or she takes to get out of the skid, this could be fatal. Motorcyclists when riding properly have lines to follow, into and out of bends and the smooth tar is all over the place. You can avoid one and hit the next and do untold damage to the bike and more importantly the rider. Now I'm not sure of the solution to this problem, but maybe a few small stones pressed into the smooth tar when it’s hot might help. We lose too many lives on our roads every year, some of which could be avoided.
Here’s a question, does anyone know why manholes are always put in the middle of our roads? Your answers to Pat Cunningham on 086 151 853.

Thanks Pat, we appreciate the advice.

WORLD KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Cahir Karate Club take part in the World Karate Championships.
Barry O' Neill from the Sui-Shin-Kai karate club Cahir has just returned from the world karate championships in Athens, Greece. The Irish team won a gold medal in women’s kata. Barry and all at the Sui-Shin-Kai karate club Cahir wish to congratulate sensei Jackie O' Shea on winning the world Kata title. Barry says “I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the championships and took away some very valuable experience from them. The standard is extremely high and you can learn a huge amount for your own training from just watching the other competitors and doing your best to take it all in. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for all their help in getting me this far: Sensei's Mick Power and Darren Fennessy, who have trained me since I started Karate 14 years ago; my friends and training partners sensei's Derek Daly, Pat Beary and William English who continually beat me into shape every week; Mick Howlin for all his help with the quiz; Tom, Tim and Loretta Shanahan for their extraordinary generosity in fund raising for me at the Bell bar Cahir; Joe Walsh for his generous donation; Gerard Hawkins for his massive support and help with the fund raising; Brendan Daly for his fund raising support and for designing the quiz; Councillor Seanie Lonergan for being an excellent Quiz master; Duneske Leisure Centre Cahir, Dolan’s Supervalu Cahir, Clonmel Omniplex Cinema and Ming’s Court Chinese restaurant for their prize donations; my family and fiancée for their huge efforts in all areas; and finally all those who purchased tickets, came to the quiz and helped me get to the championships. I could not have gotten there without all the help and support. In closing, I would like to add that with the coming of the new school year, many parents may want to get their little ones active. If you are looking for activities for them then Karate would be perfect. It will make them fit both physically and mentally and teach them discipline. So no matter if you’re in Cahir, Clonmel or wherever, find your nearest club and bring them along. If you need to contact Cahir karate club then you can call Barry on 086-0696732 or email boneill81@gmail.com
Well done to all of the team.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES?
It has been another busy week for the club with challenge games against Piltown of Kilkenny as well as an U12 game against Thurles. The Piltown game was a tough strong game which Cahir eventually emerged winners. On Thursday evening Thurles made their way down to Duneske and although we were without three of our very strong players we emerged convincing winners. Aoife Collins had a great game in goal while we saw some stout defending from Siobhan Lonergan and Roisin Costigan. Aoife Corcoran again was tremendous at all ends of the field even scoring a fantastic goal from a free. Eadaoin O Gorman is showing real signs of improvement in the forwards while a goal from new player Jessica West was great to see. The introduction of Jessica Coffey, Emma O' Donnell, Allisa Keating and Niamh Costello saw all the panel take to the pitch ensuring a victory for all concerned.
We are very proud to be associated with two players from our club Emma Buckley and Emma Corcoran who both lined out for Tipperary's U14 panel in a game against Dublin last
Weekend, - well done girls.

DOG NUISANCE AND LITTER
I received a call from a lady last week who was charged by a large dog while cycling from Cahir House car park to the Swiss Cottage walk. Luckily, the lady managed to keep control her bike, otherwise it could have been much more serious. However she was very shaken and said that the dog seemed to be alone, although there were several people walking nearby. Once again just to let people know, all dogs must be kept on a lead while being walked by their owners, and dogs are not allowed to roam free on the streets.
The problem of dog litter has once again been mentioned to me by several people, on several different streets and I have also noticed it myself. There is nothing more off putting than going for a lovely stroll around the town, only to walk into a dogs mess and then have to go home and clean it from your shoes. So please clean up after your dog and don’t allow it to litter our streets.

CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Sharon and Denis Murphy of 35 Barnora Crescent, on the birth of their baby daughter Sophie Ellen, a new sister for Patrick and Scott. Best wishes from all the O'Connor Family in Woodview.

GET WELL SOON
Best wishes to our very hard working local Councillor Seanie Lonergan, due to ill health, Cllr. Lonergan will be unavailable to his constituents for the next five weeks, but he wishes to assure everyone that he will be back in action again once he fully recovers. We all wish you a speedy recovery Seanie.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
