CAHIR NOTES 26th AUGUST
SAINTS VISIT COMMEMORATED
On Tuesday 18th August, 50 years ago, a Saint walked the streets of Cahir and dined in Cahir House Hotel. St. Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei, visited the town of Cahir in 1959 during his one and only visit to Ireland. After his death in 1975, many people all over the world began to entrust their requests both material and spiritual, to St Josemaria and discovered he was a very powerful intercessor. After the Holy See confirmed that miracles had been granted through his intercession, he was canonised by Pope John Paul II in Rome on 6th October, 2002.
St Josemaria Escrivas visit was remembered last Tuesday 18th August, when the Cahir Commemorative Committee unveiled a beautiful bronze plaque at the Library in the Square of Cahir. South Tipperary County Chairman Liam Ahearn unveiled the plaque amid a sizable crowd, including 2 coach loads of people who travelled from Dublin to Cahir for the occasion.
Pat Meagher, Chairperson of the Cahir Commemorative Committee thanked Dony McManus a renowned Irish sculptor who designed the plaque, Margaret Meagher, the local Councillors who gave the occasion their backing, South Tipperary Development Company for funding the event along with other private sponsors and the Craft Granary for the reception afterwards.

FUNDAY SUNDAY
It has been decided that, even though there was a good response from local groups and clubs to provide activities for the Funday, there simply is not enough time to organise an event that would provide the many varied activities/entertainment that would make for a packed schedule on Funday Sunday, so it will not be taking place.
With this in mind, the Committee (C.D.A) have decided to put all their energies into organising a jam packed, three day festival, for next summer. With time to organise and also plenty of time for groups/clubs to take part, we will be sure to make it a festival to remember. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who responded to the call and were prepared to give of their time and energy for the Funday and we hope that they are on board for next year. Watch this space for information on next year’s festival.

THE LATE NED KEATING
Eamonn Keating has emailed this message from Australia to advise the local people of Cahir and surrounds of the recent death of his father Ned Keating.
Ned was originally from Kilcommon Cross in Cahir and has a surviving brother still living here, Mr. Geoff Keating Snr. Ned died on the 4th of August 2009 in Sydney Australia and is survived by his 3 sons (Seamus, Christopher and Eamonn) 7 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren.
My Father and Mother (Kitty Keating nee Cooke) immigrated / retired to Australia in 1982 to be united with their sons who were already living there. It was a very brave move at their age but was greatly appreciated by all the family here. My father was 88 when he died and always spoke very highly of all the great places and people in Tipperary, especially Cahir and Ardfinnan. Thank you, Kindest Regards, Eamonn Keating, Sydney, Australia.
Thank you for sharing your sad news with us Eamonn, our condolences to you and yours. Rest in Peace Ned.
