CAHIR NOTES 2nd September
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS
The next meeting of the Cahir Tidy Towns committee will take place in the Shamrock Lounge on Castle Street, at 7.30pm, on Wednesday 2nd September. There will be an update on the results of the National Competition. We will also be discussing an application to the South Tipperary Development Company, for funding towards a project to enhance the town. It has been suggested that this application should be made on behalf of the restoration of the fountain, in the Square. Any input and suggestions can be made at the meeting. All are welcome.
SCARBOROUGH TRIP UPDATE!
The latest price for the trip is as follows -
Flights are costing €72 each - or €106, if you include luggage and insurance - and accommodation costs €73 each sharing or €147 or a single room. So that is between €145 and €253 for return flight and three night’s accommodation.
The only added extra after that which needs to be organised, is transport from Manchester Airport to Scarborough return. We cannot finalise this until we know whether we need a minibus or a coach. So, if you are interested in travelling on 9th October to Scarborough, returning on 12th October, then we need to know by Friday 11th September 2009. Call Tim on 086-0432288 for details.
THE Cllr. SAYS THANKS
Cllr Seanie Lonergan wishes to thank all those that sent good wishes in the last few weeks. The Cllr. assures me that he will be ready to serve his constituents as usual in the very near future. He extends his thanks to the staff of South Tipperary General Hospital for their excellent care and attention.
RECYCLING CENTRE
Cllr Seanie Lonergan is happy to announce that there has been an application lodged with South Tipperary County Council, to have a Recycling Centre in Cahir, however there has been an objection lodged and this could delay the process for some time .This facility is badly needed in the town and its inception would curtail the illegal dumping around the area. The plans are for a state of the art plant and guidelines by the Environment section of the County Council would be strictly adhered to.
QUIZ?
This Thursday night 3rd September, there will be a Quiz in the Gatehouse, as a fundraiser for the Girls Soccer. So please come along and support the girls. Cllr Seanie Lonergan and Tom Fahey will be your hosts on the night. Last Thursday night in the Abbey Tavern, the same duo officiated at the Childline Quiz that was attended by a large crowd and with the help of John Orme a tidy sum was raised. All concerned would like to thank Bridie and John Kendrick for their hospitality.

The meeting was well attended by local Garda, Community Alert and Neighbourhood Watch representatives, Muintir Na Tire, County Council and members of the public. All presentations were short, concise and very informative. Refreshments were served afterwards and most stayed for an informal chat.

Jobs in the garden for September.
As the summer winds down to fall, it is time to clean up the garden and plan for next spring. Water trees and shrubs less, allowing them to harden off before winter sets in. Remove spent annuals and put in some compost. Keep after the weeds and the slugs!
QUIZ NIGHT
There is a Table Quiz taking place on Thursday 10th September, at 8pm, in the Shamrock Lounge on Castle Street. This is a fundraising event in aid of John Burke, who is representing Ireland in the forthcoming European Fly fishing Championships in Killarney. To enter a table of 4 will cost €20. Lots of spots prizes on the night.
As I have already mentioned in a previous weeks notes, Angling Competitors are not funded in any way to take part in competitions, even in a European Championship. With this in mind, an account has been set up in the Bank of Ireland, should anyone wish to contribute to this very important cause. It is a current account number, 35411758, sort code, 90 59 34. Any donation is greatly appreciated.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish John the very best of luck in the European Championships.
SATURDAY SOCCER IS BACK
Cahir Park AFC Soccer Academy is back, beginning this Saturday 5th September for Registrations. Registration cost for the year is once again €5 per player. Those born 2001-2003 register between 10am and 11am. Those born 1999 - 2000 register between 11am and 12noon. Chris, Sean and Paul will once again be there this year, but we do need more volunteers for the Academy. So, if you have a child attending the 2001-2003 age group and you can spare 1 hour per week, or even every other week if work is an issue, we need your help. Coach training can be provided through the FAI and you will have experienced coaches with you for advice, support etc. This is open to Mums as well, so any person can call Chris on 085 7033509 if you are interested, and I will answer any questions to the best of my ability. We would like to welcome Sean and Leo Coffey, who will be coaching those born 1999 - 2000. Welcome on board. As our centenary draws ever closer, we welcome any new players and look forward to events that the Academy can be part of and in doing so shape the long term future of Cahir Park.
Thanks to Chris Richards for this report.

IRISH WORLD CHAMPION WRESTLER
I kid you not, Irishman Micheal Wall, who fights under the name of Conor Hurley, was crowned the Power Trip Wrestling World Champion, at a sold-out fight in Kent, England last week.
The 27 year old from Callan, in County Kilkenny, beat English opponent Aaron G, in an 18 minute bout. This makes Micheal, Ireland’s first ever wrestling world champion and guarantees him a place in the history books.
After the event the champion said” This is one of only two titles in Europe that has world title status, so I’m honoured.
We are too Micheal, Well done.
BARNORA RESIDENTS
The winner of last week’s draw was Veneera Sweeney of 44 Barnora Crescent.

THE VILLAGE INN
It is nice to hear of somewhere that has just reopened, instead of just closed in these current economic times. The Village Inn reopened on 28th August under the new management of Sammy Quinn. Congratulations and the best of luck.
GOOD LUCK
To all the children that are back to school this week.
Also to the Tipperary Hurling Team who are playing against Kilkenny next Sunday 6th September in Croke Park.
CONGRATULATIONS!!

Congratulations to Nancy and Liam Simpson who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently
FREE FOR ALL
I visited a couple of websites recently that offer all sorts of things for free, to anyone who wishes to collect them, yes for free!
If you are looking for free household goods, there are several sites you can visit to check out what’s on offer. Dublinwaste.ie (Dublin area), Jumbletown.ie and Freecyle.org (both outside the greater Dublin area) for example, are sites where people are giving away everything from electrical items, musical instruments,, bikes, trampolines and furniture and even the odd car.
You have to register on these sites before you browse, but that’s free too. These sites work because they help people get rid of unwanted items without having to pay removal costs. The deal is, you see something you would like, you email the householder and arrange to go and pick it up. You do have to provide the transport to take the item away, but that really is a small price to pay. There really are some nice things too. Alternatively, if you have an item you do not want any more, you can take a photo of it and offer it for free on these sites too. Also, if there is something you really need (say a mattress) you can put in a request for it too! Check out these sites.
CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
There was no Jackpot winner of the draw last week and the numbers drawn were, 13, 21, 22, and 26. The following received 30.00 each for the lucky dip; Ian Buckley, 3 Hillview Crescent,
Pat Hickey, Moorestown, Cahir, Jim Cantwell, Barnora, Cahir, Brendan Rowe, 13 Hillview Crescent and L Cagney, 4 Bengurragh Square, Cahir. The next draw will take place on Wednesday, 2nd September at 12 noon. The Jackpot for this week is €2950. Profit’s servicing community projects in Cahir.
WRONG SCORE!!
Oops, I printed the wrong score last week when mentioning the winners of the Shield in the Pub League. The proper result was Kenneally’s Panelbeaters 3- and Morrisseys 1 and not 4-1 as I printed last week. Sorry!!
Also it has to be mentioned, a very important man was left out of the photo printed last week, Cahirs very own Tommy O’Neill, who scored the last goal for the Panelbeater’s, a much admired player and important member of the team. Good on you Tommy.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Do not protect yourself by a fence, but rather by your friends.
