CAHIR NOTES 9th SEPTEMBER
NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SCHEME LAUNCHED
Sommerville Close Estate in Cahir launched their new Neighbourhood Watch Scheme last Wednesday 2nd September. Prior to the launch, the Residents Association of Sommerville Close surveyed the estate, asking all residents whether they wanted a scheme implemented in their area. A Public meeting was then called. The Gardai attended this meeting and explained in more detail what was involved. Subsequently, a committee was formed and Garda Dave Barry of Cahir was appointed as the Liaison Garda for Sommerville Close.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH INFORMATION
Neighbourhood Watch is a partnership between An Garda Siochana and the public. It is a self help crime prevention and community safety programme for urban areas. Every member of a community, young and old, can help to improve the quality of life, by keeping a look out for their neighbours and reporting suspicious activities to the Gardai. Every community or neighbourhood, no matter how large or small, can set up a scheme. A scheme can cover just one street, an apartment complex, a part or the whole of a housing estate. The heart of every scheme is the commitment of each household taking part in it. Every Neighbourhood Watch scheme has a Liaison Garda to make sure there is a formal link with the local Garda Station. The Gardai recognise the important help we get from the public to reduce and prevent crime, either in a Community Alert Area or a Neighbourhood Watch Area.
This is great news for Sommerville Close, Well done to all involved. Thank you to Sgt Peter Butler for this report.
BICYCLE BAYS
Cllr Seanie Lonergan has at the request of some townspeople put down a motion with the local council to have some bicycle stands around the town. In the present climate more people are taking to riding bicycles for their health and the environment. The days of leaving ones bike against the shop front are gone and there has to be a facility for bicycle riders.
WELL DONE WILLY
The grass cutting in town cannot have been easy to manage this year with the weather, but Willy Lonergan did a great job in keeping up with all the work. This is a big thank you from the estates, to Willy. Here, here.

THE BELL FOR DINNER
I made a good decision last Saturday evening, when feeling the start of a cold coming on, I took my granddaughter and headed to The Bell on Pearse Street, for dinner. They have just introduced a new menu, so I was eager to have a look.
It didn’t take us long to make up our minds as the menu is short, sweet and simple. With light bites and desserts on one side and a choice of 6 main courses on the other. I opted for the steak (protein for my cold!) which came with a portion of creamy homemade coleslaw, (not too much mind) a lovely salad garnish. My steak arrived done exactly the way I ordered it, resting on a bed of sautéed mushrooms and onions. I had chosen the pepper sauce, which was served in a little ramekin on the side, as were the chips. It was delicious.
My granddaughter ordered chicken goujons with sweet chilli sauce and chips, and it certainly was a generous portion. They were not the processed variety and were served with a golden crispy coating and were gone in about 2 minutes! We were actually both too full to think about dessert, but then we decided to share a chocolate cake with ice cream, boy I was glad we did, everyone knows I love chocolate, but dark chocolate is my favourite. The cake arrived warm with a warm chocolate sauce and a creamy vanilla ice cream. I can tell you it was very hard to resist the urge to lick the plate!
The Bells new menu is covers all the old favourites, all served with a salad garnish and I must say tasty chips, which makes for a more substantial meal. The premises are warm, clean and inviting and the staff very friendly and obliging. I will definately make a return visit.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES
The U12 Cahir team created another little bit of history on Saturday morning last when they captured the County A title in a fine game of camogie against Toomevara.
Cahir opened the scoring within the first two minutes of the game when Ashling Moloney converted a point from a "45 with great accuracy. Aoife Corcoran and Katie Farrell were working like Trojans at centre field and a lovely flick on to the Hurley of Roisin Howard resulted in another point just inside the 10 minute mark. The half back line of Grainne Quirke, Ashling Moloney and Roisin Costigan continued breaking down the ball, making it very hard for the Toomevara forwards to bring the sliothar into our danger zone. Eilleen Flannery and Roisin O' Donnell were taking their task to heart and again bringing the sliothar into our forward line keeping the Toome back line under constant pressure. Another fine pick up by Roisin Howard resulted in a point to bring the score at half time to Cahir 0-3 to Toomevara's 0-0.
Within 2miutes of the opening second half, Roisin Howard had another point to add to the score board. As a result of the puck out from that score, the ball was gathered at mid field by Aoife Corcoran, who sent it on its way into the forward line where it was met by Jessica West, who in turn passed it on to Eadaoin O' Gorman, who made no mistake in rattling the back of Toome's goal. Another great clearance by Ashling Moloney saw the sliothar back up in Toomes back line and a lovely pull on the ground by Derbhla Buckley saw another goal being added to Cahir’s tally. After getting the feel for scoring, young Derbhla was not content with one goal and soon added to her tally with another fine goal. Although Toomevara's scoring ability was not strong on the day, they had some fine players and did not give Cahir an easy passage. For five minutes or more of the second half's twenty, they bombarded the Cahir back line. But stout defending from Carl Casey, Siobhan Lonergan, Kirsty Arbuckle and with a cool head in the goal, Keely Halpin of Cahir limited Toome's scoring to 2points.
When the final whistle sounded it was with great joy and relief that joint captains Roisin Howard and Ashling Moloney lifted the shining cup on behalf of the Cahir team. No success comes without work and the practise and commitment of the panel showed on the day. Tremendous credit must go to the management and trainers in the form of Mary Howard, Martin Halpin, Jane O' Gorman and Anthony Corcoran who give of their time, week in, week out with the team.
Many thanks to Martina, Margaret and Jane who organised refreshments for the team and supporters back in the GAA dressing rooms after the game. We would especially like to acknowledge the support for the team on the day, it was great to see so many up at the Ragg shouting on this very young and promising team.
PANEL: K Halpin, S Lonergan, C Casey, K Arbuckle, G Quirke, A Moloney, R Howard, A Corcoran, K Farrell, R O Donnell, R Howard, E Flannery, J West, E O Gorman, D Buckley, L Casey, A Collins, E O Donnell, A Keating, J Coffey, S Burke, N Costello, R McCarthy.
Final score Cahir 3-5 Toomevara 0-2
A reminder that the camogie Blitz for the U10 and U8 team’s, takes place in Duneske on Saturday 13th September next, starting at 11am.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you'll find one at the end of your arm. As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others.
