CAHIR NOTES 16th SEPTEMBER
GAA FIELD DAY a huge Success
What a beautiful day it turned out to be too. Amid glorious sunshine the whole of the GAA grounds between the entrance gate and the end of the pitch was packed with lots of fun things to do and see for both adults and children alike and many turned up for the annual event.
The new addition of a “Battle of the Bands” contest gave lively background music to the afternoon’s entertainment and I must say that the wealth of musical talent that we have locally is truly amazing. Amongst the crowd walked the lovely ladies that were competing in the Miss Cahir GAA 2009 competition and I certainly would not have liked the job of choosing a winner, as they were all lovely and beautifully dressed too. There were also many gorgeous babies present with their proud parents, for the Bonnie Baby Show. The ever popular Dog Show was in its usual place and there were many dog owners walking their very well behaved dogs around as well. The Pets Corner is always irresistible and enjoyable to all the children (and me!)
Mary’s Afternoon Tea area went down a treat after a delicious burger from Wally & Teds Bar B Que. There really were some tasty cakes and desserts to choose from. With the many side shows and novelty events that were on site, just sitting down and watching the spectacle in the sun was really very enjoyable.
The Committee would like to extend their Thanks to;
David, Robert and Colette in Cahir House Hotel, where the girls who were taking part in the Miss GAA Competition were introduced, for all their help on Friday night and the week leading up to the event. Without their help and support the event would not have been such a success. To Noel Cotter and co. for the music they supplied on Friday night. To everyone who supplied prizes for the raffle, we are indebted to you for your generosity. To Joe Walsh for the use of his window to display the photographs. Thanks to all the shops, businesses and Clubs who took part in the Miss Cahir GAA Competition, without you the event could not have taken place. To all the girls who were willing to give up their weekend to participate in the event. To Melissa Hill and her husband Kevin who gave freely of their time to interview the girls individually in the hotel. To Andy Moloney who was terrific with the introduction of each girl on the night. Thanks to Margaret & Hughie O'Donoghue of the Shamrock Lounge for putting on a meal for all the contestants and Committee on Saturday night. Thanks to Sean O'Gorman for the use of his tractor and trailer and to Pattie Costigan, Margaret Corcoran, Jo Burke, Margaret O'Donnell and Bridget McEniry who spent all Saturday evening doing up the trailer for the girls.
Well done to all the committee, who said that when you had people of the calibre of Geraldine Hickey and Larry Molan as the driving force, the day was bound to be a success. When it comes to leadership, commitment and organisational ability these two together, have no equals.
Thanks to Bill Noonan and Michael O'Brien for making the Church Car Park available and supplying us with chairs for the day. The winners of the Baby Show were Mia McCarthy, Cashel, Twins - Sasha & Layla Tideswell, Clogheen, Sean Lee Hanrahan ,Tipperary & Dean O'Connor, Waterford. Thanks to Evelyn O'Hara for judging.
Winner of Miss Cahir GAA Competition was Elaine Flanagan representing €2 World, 2nd Place, Leanne Barrett representing Cahir Credit Union and 3rd Place Cathy O'Donoghue representing The Shamrock Lounge. The winner was presented with a cheque and a beautiful trophy and tiara, which were sponsored by John Quirke Jewellers. Thanks to John who has been a valued supporter and sponsor of the club over many years. Thanks to Melissa Hill and her husband Kevin for judging the competition, which they said, was the one of the hardest decisions they had to make, as all the girls were wonderful. Thanks to Breeda Ryan for making the beautiful sashes.
Winner of Battle of the Bands were Army Rising. Thanks to Johnny B. O'Brien for organising the bands, it was an outstanding event. All the bands were excellent and provided great live music on the day. Some of us ageing rockers relived some of our youth on Sunday.
Thanks to Maureen Calvert for organising the Dog Show.

Thanks to all the volunteers on the day from the gate to the shop, teas & coffees, face painting, Teddy Bears Picnic, and the side shows. To all those who organised the blitz and the races. To the chefs on the BBQ, who turned out some culinary delights on what was an extra hot day for them. Andy Moloney, as MC on the day, was his usual witty self and thanks to Gerry Bell for the loudspeakers. Thanks to Martin & Gertie Moloney who had a wonderful display of birds and animals which was a great attraction for young and old alike.
Well done to all involved, it certainly was a lovely, well organised day out.
TIDY TOWNS RESULTS
As you are all aware, Emly in County Tipperary won the coveted Tidy Towns Award last week and congratulations to them for all their hard work and commitment. This reflected in their high score in the national competition.
Cahir also did much better this year in the ratings, with a result of 260 points. This result is seven points higher than last year. Cahir came first in its category in Tipperary, scoring higher than Cashel and Tipperary.
Cahir Tidy Towns Committee is to be commended for their constant efforts to improve our lovely Town. However, now is the time to think about next year’s competition and how we can do more to achieve an even better result. With this in mind, the present Committee is now urging people to volunteer to be on the committee for next year. The more people that volunteer, the more that can be achieved. The workload can be spread around and the town will look so much better for it. Facing into next year, a three year plan will be drawn up in time. So go on, give an hour or two of your time and be part of the team.
COUNTRY MARKET CELEBRATES 35 YEARS.

Choral is back to Thursday nights! Following the recent extended recess since Christmas, Cahir Choral Society will begin rehearsals again this Thursday night 17th September at 8pm, at New Haven. We look forward to meeting all our members again and will heartily welcome new members.
No experience of music is necessary and we have no auditions and no competitions. We just love to sing; enjoy learning beautiful songs; and in these depressed times we all NEED to sing. Our first performance this season will be in St Paul's Church for the Harvest Thanksgiving on Sunday 11th October.
There are some great singers in and around Cahir and the bigger the Choir, the better the sound. Choral is fun, so come along on Thursday nights at eight. Please don't hesitate! Get involved now and join our Choral group. Contact Maureen Ahern on 087 231 9639.

COLAISTE NEWS
September heralds the arrival of a new school year, and this year it promises to be another busy one for students and staff alike. The Colaiste welcomes the new first year students who appear to have settled well, helped by the Induction Day and the programmes run by the Guidance Department. We also welcome the many newly enrolled students in other year groups to the Colaiste, and new staff members Mr. Cian Corrigan and Ms. Treasa Byrne.
Students were delighted with their Junior Cert results on Wednesday last. The high standards achieved were in keeping with recent years. Many students achieved high grades, but most importantly, the vast majority achieved their expected results or higher. Congratulations to the student’s, and also to their parents and teachers on the high standards achieved.
A key to success in exams is consistency and effort in homework. To that end, students can avail of after-school study in the Colaiste for an additional fee. Study runs from 3.40pm to 5.55pm Monday to Friday and provides an ideal environment for students to work and study. Parents interested in availing of this for their sons/daughters should contact the college on 052-7442828.
CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES
?Blessed with glorious late summer sunshine, our U10 and U8 girls took the limelight on Saturday morning last in Duneske where they took part in a club organised Blitz. Our near neighbours Moyle Rovers and St. Mary's came out to take part in a very successful morning. With proceedings getting underway just around 11am, the girls then enjoyed over two and a half hours of Camogie, played in a lovely atmosphere with their proud parents looking on. Each player received a medal for their endeavours and the morning was finished off with some refreshments, all enjoyed in the beautiful surroundings of Duneske with the Galtee mountains in the background. Again, none of this would have been possible without plenty of organisation and many congratulations must go to Margaret McCarthy and her crew of helpers, who made the day so successful. Also to the parents who gave up their morning to watch the young Camogie players of the future in action. We are also indebted to the older members of the club who helped out with the refereeing of the games, Shauna, Marion, Aoife, Emma C and Emma B, - many thanks girls.
TIPP FM/CAHIR BINGO
Cahir Bingo is holding a special fundraising bingo night for Tipp FM Day, next Tuesday 22nd September. All monies raised on the night will be donated to Tipp FM as they are raising funds for Our Lady's hospital in Crumlin. There will be extra raffles and chances to win even more money. The lucky number last night was €930 plus €70 for the full house. We all know people locally that benefit greatly from Crumlin Children’s Hospital and we would appreciate your support on the night. It starts at 8.30pm in the Community Hall and all are welcome.
JOHNNY B & THE BOOGIE BAND
On Sunday 20th September from 6.30pm yet again, the Irwins Yard team are gearing up for a superb Sunday Session in the guise of Johnny B & The Boogie Band. This 4 piece band blew the socks of the crowd who packed into Irwin’s on the August Bank Holiday Weekend last. The crowd witnessed a Top Class set which included Kings of Leon, Kaiserchiefs, Bob Marley and Queen, to name but a few. Local lad Johnny B’s talents are to be commended and his voice is extremely diverse. On speaking with Johnny B, he confirmed that he has agreed a monthly event in Irwin’s for the foreseeable future. Get yourself down to Irwin’s early next Sunday, as this Gig promises to be packed to the rafters again. Who said Rock & Roll was dead? I will most definitely be there.
COTTAGE ANIMAL RESCUE
Pat Crotty and Friends are holding a Bric a Brac Sale in aid of Cottage Animal Rescue on Sunday 20th September, in the Community Hall, Cahir from 2pm to 4pm.
There will be jewellery, handbags, sunglasses, children’s toys and much more. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Al monies raised will go to ease the suffering of the many abused and unwanted animals that are rescued by Cottage Rescue. It is a very hard and often sad job, but helping the animals in desperate situations can also be very rewarding.
