CAHIR NOTES 23rd SEPTEMBER
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS
As mentioned last week, Cahir scored 260 out of 400 points in the National Tidy Towns competition. The adjudicators were very complimentary. They considered Cahir to possess all of the ingredients to make it Ireland’s tidiest town, and a wonderful experience. Their report included the following
THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND LANDSCAPING:
Cahir is truly a heritage town, with the heritage buildings well maintained. The town square is the focal point, with a relaxed atmosphere despite the traffic. Trees and landscaping make the Square attractive. The side of the street leading to the granary is the town pride. In other parts of the town centre, the painting lends a shabby appearance, as in the case of the AIB. Bilingual signs are suggested. Some of the flower beds are well maintained, others are very shabby. The flowers at the monument, the landscaping on the Clonmel and Limerick approach roads and the GAA pitches and Cahir Park were well admired. The adjudicator had a wonderful time on the new walk at the Swiss Cottage and saw the contribution of the anglers to wildlife along that stretch.
LITTER CONTROL AND TIDINESS:
They praised the co-ordinated clean ups. Back areas suffer from open air drinking. Cigarette butts are a problem all over, particularly around the Tourist Office and bus stop. They complimented the schools for attaining the Green Flag Status. They drew attention to the weeds along the kerbs.
RESIDENTIAL AREAS:
Some estates were immaculate; some had too many weeds and litter.
The full report is with the Tidy Towns committee or can be read at www.tidytowns.ie

HOSPICE MORNING AT THE LAZY BEAN
Karen Donovan of the Lazy Bean held her annual Coffee Morning in aid of South Tipp Hospice last Thursday 17th September. There really was a great atmosphere amid the lovely array of tasty cakes and treats and the continuous flow of coffee that we all enjoyed for free that morning.
Karen would like to thank sincerely all who supported and attended the event, specially the team of people who help every year to make the day the success that it is. A very special mention must go to the loyal staff of the Lazy Bean who gave their services free for the morning and also donated their wages to this very important cause.
The current count is at €3,200 and still rising. Well done to Karen and the girls for this very successful fundraiser.
I won a lovely prize in the draw!

TAEKWON-DO SCHOOL OPENING
Cahir Community Hall will be the venue for a new Taekwon-Do school starting next Wednesday 23rd September at 5.00pm, under the inspection of Alek Milanov. Milanov, age 34, is a fifth degree black belt with the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) and will be testing for 6th Degree in three weeks time in Spain. Alek won the Bulgarian National Championships at the young age of 15 and therefore qualified for the ITF World championships in Korea. Soon after his family emmigrated to the USA where he obtained US nationality, as an “alien of extraordinary ability” due to his exceptional achievements in the Taekwon-Do arena. In fact this was the first time in US history that an individual had achieved US Nationality through ITF Taekwon-Do achievements. While in the USA, Alek won over 40 tournaments including such major events as the World Cup and Pan American Championships. As a result of his amazing run of wins in the USA he was picked to assist the president of the ITF (the world ruling body) Master Choi Jung Hwa on numerous international trips. He was also selected as the head referee for the finals of the World Championships in Argentina in 2002.
When asked about the new club in Cahir, Alek said “this is a great sporting town and the national association was very keen to bring a top class club here. Taekwon-Do is fantastic for developing confidence in children as well as discipline and respect. Of course it is an excellent form of self defence. I would like to develop a world class club in Cahir and I look forward to many fruitful years ahead.” The new classes will begin next Wednesday at the Cahir Community Hall (5.00-6.00pm). All are welcome. Contact number 086-8761749, email: bulgartkd@hotmail.com.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES?
If you were looking for excitement, skill, tenacity, a high scoring game or indeed all of the above, then the place to have been was in the Ragg on Friday evening last, for the County U14 B League semi-final. Cahir lined out against Roscrea on a fine evening with a good crowd of spectators who were lucky enough to witness such a fine display of camogie from both teams. This was no arena for the faint hearted and each player on the field were tested and tried to the limit. Cahir opened the scoring with a goal from Joye Arbvuckle. We added four more points from the sticks of Ashling McCarthy, Roisin Howard, Kirsty Downey and Ashling Moloney before Roscrea put their names on the score board with a point. They quickly followed this with a goal and another point but were answered by Cahir scoring 3 more points in quick succession. One could not take their eyes of the game for a second as the speed of this contest was so fast. Two more points form Roscrea and 3 more from Cahir saw the score at half time - Cahir 1-9 Roscrea 1-4.
The second half opened just as lively as the first half ended. When a quick point from Ashling Moloney was answered by a goal from Roscrea, no one had time to rest on the ash! The mid- field pairing of Kirsty Downey and Aofie Corcoran were constantly busy while the two Ashling's - McCarthy and Moloney were sweeping and clearing at every angle of the field. The two Emma's - Corcoran and Buckley were under constant pressure and it was seldom they were found wanting. Clara O' Donnell and Ciara Lonergan along with Alana Bourke also did great work clearing their lines. Roisin Howard was on fire in the forwards and frustrated her marker taking her well out into the mid field area and then turning to race back in with the sliothar on her hurley, more often than not finishing with a score. A super point from the stick of Rachel O' Dwyer and a great goal from Kirsty Downey saw Cahir win through to another County Final in the coming weeks. Final score: Cahir 5-13 Roscrea 4-4
Panel: Sadhbh O' Donnell, Ciara Lonergan, Emma Corcoran, Alanna Bourke, Clara O' Donnell, Emma Buckley, Carl Casey, Aoife Corcoran, Kirsty Downey (1-1), Ashling Moloney (0-6), Ashling McCarthy (0-1), Rachel O' Dwyer(0-1), Ashley McEniry, Roisin Howard(3-4), Joyer Arbuckle (1-0), Katie Farrell, Alina Newmeritsky, Grainne Quirke, Eadaoinn O Gorman, Roisin Costigan.
As the days are growing shorter, this Wednesday evening - September 23rd will probably see the last of the outdoor training for this season. We will be going indoors at Colaiste Dun Iascaigh for the young players on Wednesday September 30th.

BALLOON CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Irish Hot Air Balloon Championships will start next Sunday 27th September. The week-long event will take place in the skies above the lovely Woodlands Hotel in Waterford. READERS NEWS AND VIEWS
My weekend was almost ruined when I discovered that the only bank machine in town (besides Supervalu, which is closed at night) was out of order all weekend. Am I the only person who feels it is about time we got another one?
If you have any news, views or notes for the Cahir page, you can contact me on 086 1022014 or email me on caplicetaylor@hotmail.com. By Sunday, because that is when I do the notes. Thank you.
