CAHIR NOTES 30th SEPTEMBER
CAHIR WOMAN LIFESAVER?
Cahir woman Marian Duffy deserves the highest praise for being on hand to save the life of a woman in Clonmel recently. Marian was in O’Gorman’s Cafe in Clonmel when an elderly woman suffered cardiac arrest, Marians nurses training was put into practice and she made sure the ambulance was called before administering CPR. Because of her quick actions the patient is alive today. Marian also completed a defibrillator refresher course with the Cahir Area Defibrillator Group. The Chairman of the group Cllr Seanie Lonergan said that the people of Cahir are all very proud of Marian.
They are Marian, well done to you.
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS
Cahir has achieved its highest marks ever in the National Awards for 2009 with 260 points and have won Category D in the county. In this section we levelled with Cashel last year and now put them and Tipp Town behind us for this year. Great efforts have been made by many individuals and Council Staff alike but more help is needed to achieve new heights. The National Judges referred to Cahir as one of the most picturesque towns that they have visited and has all the potential to go a long way in the National Tidy Towns Competition. The Natural Backdrop of the Cahir Castle, Churches and The Square are the envy of many towns and the River, the Mall and Swiss Cottage walk are an adjudicators dream. Full results and comments can be obtained from www.tidytowns.ie and are available on the night of the awards.
The local competition this year was by entry only, at a price of €5 and the closing date had been extended to accommodate those who didn’t see it advertised the first time around. The Council offices acquired the services of an outside gardener for the judging and while he commented on the many fine entries he had to judge, he also noted that there were many gardens and premises that had not entered and could possibly have won prizes. The areas entered were as follows; Best Individual Garden, Best Hanging Basket, Best Estate, Best Shop Front, Tidiest Business Premises.
All entrants are invited to the Shamrock Lounge on the 6th October where a broken down score sheet will be available. Prizes will be awarded to the first 3 and a highly commended certificate to some sections because of the high quality of entries.
The judge has commented that we should change the categories around a bit for next year and the Chairman would welcome further recommendations from residents either on the night or at the next meeting. For Cahir to achieve higher marks in the future we will need the help of many more volunteers to give a half hour a week to look after your own area. There is a true saying that Many Hands make Light work and don’t forget the Awards Night in the Shamrock Lounge on October 6th.
ALLOTMENTS?
Cllr Seanie Lonergan has not forgotten about the allotments in the Cahir area. There were a couple of points to be ironed out with the South Tipperary Council, mostly red tape. He has a motion put down at the next monthly meeting which should bring closure to the holdup. Permission for the Woodview allotments is also in the final stages. The Cllr and the landowner went to the Cappamore Allotments to see firsthand what everything entailed, so watch this space for further news.

NEW EXHIBITION
Mary Hayes who is originally from Golden, Co.Tipperary and is now living in Cahir, completed B.A. Art (Paint) 2008 in Cluain Mhuire, Galway. Her exhibition ''Open Boundaries'' is a series of paintings which was developed from inspirations she has taken from the writings of the late John O' Donohue in'' Divine Beauty''. He talks about "The language of Light and Colour ''
''Colour is not simply a surface pigment or covering. The very heart of an object glows through its colour. Without our eyes there is no colour. The colour of beauty is an intricate play of presence and absence. Colour is never alone for each reflected colour arises through the interplay of other hidden colours." The exhibition runs from the 28th September to 24th October 09.

FUN DOG SHOW
The Dog Show at the recent GAA Field Day was great fun and although there wasn't a very big entry, there were some quality dogs in the ring, and well as some old friends. Maureen Calvert sent me the following results, adding how much she enjoyed the whole afternoon - particularly the great cakes.
Mrs Ryan - Tipperary Rosettes - donated the lovely rosettes once more, which were much appreciated.
"Amongst the young dogs present there were a lovely German Shepherd, a very promising Samoyed and 2 nice Staffordshire Bull Terriers. All were very promising and augur well for the future.
"The winner of his two classes and Best in Show was Pa Ryan's Rottweiler Bradson, he has matured into a very handsome chap indeed and went around the ring like a train - and a very well-oiled one at that, a pleasure to watch.
"The Fun classes were just that - everyone seemed to enjoy them and so did the judge. There were just three entries in the Fancy Dress class, which was a pity, but the dogs all looked great. When it came to the class for Veterans, there were two terriers aged 17 and 18 who tied for first - two lovely old campaigners and impossible for even Sooty to beat, as they have so many years on her. What a lovely class this was!
"The Rescue in Best Condition gave the judge a bit of a surprise when a Yellow Labrador came into the ring that had already been seen in Sporting, and more or less dismissed because of lack of condition. When talking to the owner, it was found that he had only had Beaker for three weeks. If he can present this dog so well in three weeks, what will he look like next year? Beaker has a gorgeous head and when he has muscled up should do well.
"The last event was the Dog & Owner Race, which was, as ever, hilarious and ended the day on a high note. As far as can be remembered, it was won by the Samoyed and owner, but the judge forgot to make a note. Sorry one and all, and thanks for your entries."
Thanks for the report Maureen.
THE LATE JOHN KIRWAN
The death took place on the 15th September of John [Johnny] Kirwan of Bengurrah Square Cahir following a short illness. Johnny was seventy years old and coming from an old Cahir family returned to the town every year. Since leaving Cahir Johnny lived in Billericay in Essex. He married and had 3 children with his wife May who hailed from Galway. For most of his working life he worked in the Midland Bank. Johnny and May had a passion for ballroom dancing which took up all their weekends. The remains will be interred in the cemetery beside the Billericay Catholic Church on the 30th of September. He is survived by his Sisters Maureen and Josephine who reside in Cahir. The people of Cahir offer their sympathy to his family. May he rest in peace.
CAHIR & DISTRICT LADIES CLUB?
The ladies club was back after a break for the summer on Monday 21st September. There are a very disappointing small number of members who are still supporting the club. We will be meeting on Monday 5th October at 9pm in the hall to decide what the future of the club now is. Insurance will be due in November and it is just not viable to ask the few loyal members who are supporting the club to pay for it. It is a pity to see the club go as we have done so many great things together and enjoy meeting up, so come on ladies let’s get back to it!!
A WORD OF THANKS
Following my return from the European Fly-fishing competition in Killarney, I would like to express my gratitude and whole hearted thanks to many people and companies in Cahir who supported me in my pursuit. It was an outstanding field of competitors and the Irish teams fought hard and earned 7th & 9th places, we were proud to have a team member, Dave Dononvan, achieve a bronze medal.
In the build up to the competition there were two fundraising events organised for me and I would like to thank the Shamrock Lounge for hosting the quiz night and the Abbey Tavern for the eye opening pyjama party and BBQ. For the donations, as well as those given in for raffle prizes, I would like to thank everyone, too numerous to individually list, however I will personally be thanking everyone again, without these events it would have been near on impossible for me to have the essentials to compete, so thank you everyone.
Above all, without Cahir & District Anglers Association, I would not have even had the proud and prestigious opportunity to fish for Ireland and for this I thank them for all that they gave to me, including support, guidance and the irreplaceable Irish Team blazer. I hope that in return, for years to come I will be able to assist future competitors in order to bring gold medals back to Cahir.
John Burke.
John also asked me to mention that the account that was opened for fundraising purposes is now closed. Thanks John and well done on your achievements, keep fishing!
C.D.A UPDATE
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
Are you short of publicity for your club or community group?
Do you want to show the public what your organisation has done over the years?
Then why not take part in our upcoming Photographic Exhibition in Cahir House Hotel on Sunday 15th November, 2009 from 1pm-5.30pm.
If your answer is yes and you would like to take this opportunity to showcase your organisation/group and its achievements all you have to do is;
(1) Bring/email all your old and new photos to Helen Quirke in the Enterprise Centre. By the closing date of Friday 6th November.
(2) Helen will catalogue, photocopy and return the photos to you, so there is no risk of damage or loss.
(3) We will then allocate you a space at the Exhibition and on the day we will need some assistance from you to put the photos in place.
(4) We strongly recommend that you should man the ‘stand’ so that you can answer any questions relating to the photos. This would also be an excellent PR opportunity and a chance to recruit new members and/or sponsors.
(5) The good news is that Cahir Development Association will do this at no cost to your organisation.
If you would like more information please call Helen Quirke on 052 7442616 or email her at reception@cahirda.com .

GOOD NEWS
Eric McEniry turned 4 this past July. Within the last month he has completed a year and a half of intense and often painful treatments. He is now finished with the chemotherapy line otherwise known as ‘freddie’ and has more energy than he ever had. This is a very long way from where he was last year and we his parents, Simon and Emma would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness over the past 17 months and announce with great pleasure that Eric has now reached a stage of remission. He is soon to travel to EuroDisney and has also started playschool and made lots of friends. We hope things will continue to stay well for us and would especially like to thank those who are continuing to pray for Eric, as we believe your prayers and support are what kept us going all along.
Thank you!
The McEniry & Fitzpatrick families.
That really is the best of news, well done Eric.
