CAHIR NOTES 28TH OCTOBER

THE OLD SILO
Cllr Seanie Lonergan has been in touch with the demolition company that have been given the tough job of taking down the old silo and he has been informed that the concrete structure will be demolished next week. The asbestos sheeting has already been almost entirely removed. The Labour Cllr. says that the dangerous lagging or powder asbestos has already been disposed of for some weeks now. Seanie added that Alchemy Properties are to be commended in carrying out this massive operation. The only possible hold up to the operation would be adverse weather conditions. The Cllr. has also been informed that the cost of removing the structure is around one million euro.

ALDI STORE
Work is to commence on the new Aldi store shortly. Cllr Seanie Lonergan says that the planning issues have been sorted out now and the site is being cleared as you read this. The Labour Councillor was hopeful that it would be open by Christmas, but it will now be into the New Year. The Cllr says that the new store is eagerly awaited by the populace of Cahir.

BRIDGE STREET
Work is almost complete on the Bridge at Bridge Street. Because the bridge was in worse condition than was first anticipated, the works were delayed. However, the County Council engineers and staff as well as the contractors have done a first class job in carrying out the essential repairs. Cllr Seanie Lonergan commends all those involved. The work has ensured that the bridge will be there for hundreds of years to come.

I think we now all realise how important that bridge is, as far as access is concerned and I’m sure like me, can’t wait for the bridge to be in use again. MT.

P.A.W.S. and Cottage Rescue
There was a draw in Super Valu on the 17th October in aid of P.A.W.S and Cottage Rescue and Pat Crotty would like to thank most sincerely the following people for their help on the day:-

John and Carmel Dolan & Staff of Super Valu, for kindly allowing the use of their premises to sell tickets and for providing teas and coffees to the ticket sellers, the great friends who stood for hours selling tickets, to everyone who bought tickets and also anyone who gave donations.
The total amount raised was €1,775.00 and this has been divided between P.A.W.S. and Cottage Rescue. Gina from P.A.W.S. and Hannah from Cottage Rescue would especially like to thank the people of Cahir for all their support over the years.
The winner of the lovely Hamper sponsored by Cahir Credit Union was Georgina Enright.
Pat would like to remind people to lock their animals indoors at Halloween, as this is the most distressing time of the year for them and keeping them indoors is the best way to spare them from what is considered to be fun for us human’s, but unfortunately absolute torture for the animals.

NEWS FROM COLAISTE DUN IASCAIGH
Debating Society
On Tuesday 20th October the Debating Society enjoyed its first outing of the year at the University of Limerick, in the preliminary rounds of the Denny Debates.
Two teams represented the Colaiste on the night – Erin Grant & Monika Gaciarz and Thomas Sampson & Dean Buckley. Both teams spoke in favour of their motions – “That the House believes reality TV shows have a duty of care to their contestants” and “That the House condemns the release of the Lockerbie bomber” with great skill and many valid points. They were unfortunate not to qualify for the quarter finals this round, but are hopeful of better fortune in the next preliminary round, when they will have another opportunity to qualify.
Safety on the roads
Micheal O’Gorman visited the collage last week and gave a talk and demonstration to students in LCA and Transition Year on various aspects of safe road usage. A very impressive speaker, he included in his talk a wide variety of examples to the students of how young people’s lives had been brought to premature ends as a result of reckless driving.
This car safety demonstration is grant aided by South Tipperary County Council. The Road Safety Programme that is delivered to Transition year students is promoted by the Road Safety Authority. Students will engage in other safety activities throughout the year.
Colaiste girls lose narrowly to Fermoy
The senior girls football team were most unlucky to finish on the wrong end of a 2-11 to 2-9 score line when they faced Loreto Fermoy in their Munster “A” Campaign last week. Level at 1-6 each at half time with the goal coming from Eimear Myles, Loretto stormed 6 points clear early in the second. The Cahir girls then lost both Geraldine O’Donnell and Eimear Myles to injury, but responded with a magnificent fight back. A great goal by Siobhan Heffernan with 5 minutes remaining made it a one point game, but Loretto scored again to leave 2 points between the sides at the final whistle.

The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity.
