CAHIR NOTES 2nd December
TIDY TOWNS PLAN AHEAD
The Cahir Tidy Towns Enhancement Group is pleased to announce that they have secured the funding needed to draw up a 3 year plan for the Town. On Monday last, the consultant Mr Frank Donaldson visited Cahir, accompanied by the Area Engineer in a visit of all the local schools. After lunch, he met with Traders, Residents and members of the Public in a series of meetings that went on well into the evening. Mr Donaldson was responsible for the town plan for Emly, who had great success in the Tidy Towns Awards this year. The Chairman, of Cahir Tidy Towns, Andy Moloney, said that this is a great opportunity for the town of Cahir to contest the top honours in the Tidy Towns Competition. He added “We have to plan now for the almost certain cutbacks in council budgets over the coming years. The Council have committed to the usual services, but more input will be needed by the townspeople. With the current economic situation, people may not have time to lend to this worthy cause.”
Mr Moloney continued “South Tipperary Volunteer Agency was also present on the night to add support to the organisation and they will also have an input in the 2010 plans. We must now wait until the report comes back and we can then look at the areas that need to be targeted. A forensic study of the town will be carried out over the coming weeks and we hope to call everybody together early in the new year, when all will be briefed on the proposed plans.”
The Chairman would like to thank the Council, South Tipp Development Board, Cahir Development Association and those who have kept Tidy Towns alive over the years. He hopes that with this renewed effort, local people will come back on board to support Cahir Tidy Towns and play a part of in making Cahir an award winning town.
Any comments or ideas can be passed on to Andy Moloney, through the Enterprise Centre, Market Yard, Cahir.

TRANSITION YEAR STUDENTS TO HELP CAHIR GARDAI .
On Saturday last the 21th November, Minister Eamon O Cuiv launched the Cahircashelalert.com web page at Cahir Business and Training Centre. This web page covers activity from the 18 Community Alerts and 11 Neighbourhood Watches in Cahir Garda District. Sgt Peter Butler of Cahir welcomed Minister Eamonn O Cuiv, Deputy Mattie McGrath TD and Guests to the Launch in Cahir. He stated that in 2006 there was an increase of Burglaries in the Cahir Garda District. (ie Cahir , Cashel ,Clogheen, Ardfinnan , Ballyporeen, New Inn )He has compiled a Crime Prevention Poster which was designed by Helen Quirke and her staff at Cahir Business and Training Centre at a very reasonable cost, which was paid for by the District Committee Formed in 2000.
500 Laminated Forms were distributed at the Annual Older Persons Party in Jan 2007 and over 1000 Posters were distributed through the 18 Community Alert and 11 Neighbourhood Watch Groups. Sgt Butler stated that he was happy to report that in 2007 and in 2008 there was a decrease in the number of burglaries in the District. This was he believed, due to increased Garda activity and support of this local project by the Community. This Crime Prevention Poster has been updated and is now on the New Web Page.
He stated that the aims of the District Committee of Community Alert /Neighbourhood Watches are to Prevent Crime and to improve the quality of life of all living in these Communities. Improving the quality of life is done by various activities throughout the year, but the first event each year is the holding of The Older Persons Party every January in Cahir House Hotel. On January the 15th, 2010 we will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary and from the mere 100 people that attended in 2000, we are now planning to look after over 400 people next January, due to the increase in popularity.
He also stated that the various groups have been busy installing Social Monitoring Alarms and visiting the Elderly since 2000 and before Sgt Butler took the opportunity to thank the Minister and his Department of Community Rural and Gaelteacht Affairs for the Funding they have received to date, he also stated that as a result of the Community and the Gardai being involved in this project, it meant that the Gardai knew the older persons in the Community well and more importantly still, the Older Persons knew the Gardai well too. Sgt. Butler also stated that 21 of this year’s transition year students from Colaiste Dun Iascaigh have agreed to help the community improve the quality of life for all and he thanked the two representatives from transition year for attending.
Sgt Butler finished by thanking Alan Joyce of Inspireit.ie who trained the 7 Committee Members and three Gardai in designing the new web page. He stated that it would have not been possible only for the support that they had got from Helen Quirke and her Staff at Cahir Business and Training Centre. He also thanked President Martin Quinn, Muintir na Tire, Liam Kelly National Coordinator of Community Alert, Deputy Mattie McGrath, Garda Pat English and Mr Bill Coffey both for their attendance and their support over the last ten years. They would encourage people visiting our web page to also Visit the National Garda Web Page and the Muintir Na Tire site also.
