NOTICE TO DENTAL PATIENTS
Ronan O’Donoghue from the Granary Dental Practice in Cahir sent me the following important information.
In the recent budget, PRSI treatment for 2010 has been restricted to exam only. If patients register with their dentist before 31st December they will be entitled to treatment under the present subsidised scheme for up to a further nine months. This entitles the patient to an examination once a year, a cleaning twice a year six months apart and further subsidised treatment. We would urge patients to contact their local TD and complain that they are paying PRSI contributions but to no benefit.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our patients, from the Granary Dental Practice.

Thanks for the information Ronan.

AN ACTIVE CHRISTMAS GIFT
An active Christmas gift can improve your child’s health, say Chartered Physiotherapists. Chartered Physiotherapists are recommending that people buying Christmas presents for children this year should include gifts that encourage active play, to help children achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity every day.
The Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP) is concerned that many of the toys that children are asking Santa to bring do not encourage play that is sufficiently energetic to help keep them healthy. “The most popular toys involve sedentary play, however the ISCP recommends toys which promote physical activity which is the key to ensuring children's health”, said Spencer Turvey MISCP, Communications Officer with the ISCP.
Chartered Physiotherapists are suggesting a list of alternatives to this year's big sellers. “Including just one of these toys in a child's Christmas stocking will help them have some healthy fun with active play. Hopefully this wish list will help would-be Santa’s ensure their children’s health”. Suggestions include (in no particular order):
1. Skipping rope
2. Roller skates
3. Football
4. Hula hoop
5. Frisbee
6. Basketball hoop
7. Tennis racquet
8. Swimming goggles
9. Plug in and play dance mat
10. Pogo stick
11. Nintendo Wii Fit Plus game
12. Trainers/plimsolls
Chartered Physiotherapists suggest that Christmas is an ideal opportunity to introduce children to fun active play, as alongside usual presents, one piece of sporting equipment or an energetic toy in their stockings will help children to get a bit of vital exercise while they enjoy Christmas time and all their presents. The presents on our wish list are reasonably priced meaning that keeping your children active and protecting their long-term health doesn't need to break the bank.
Definitely food for thought.

COLAISTE NEWS

Basketball update
The start of the 2009/10 school year has again seen the involvement of a large segment of the student body in extra-curricular sports. Such has been the case with school basketball this year where our U16 and U19 Boys and Girls teams have been competing in the local school regional leagues. From the start both sets of teams have shown considerable commitment to training and matches as well as a keen interest in learning about the game and in improving their skills. Each team has been training one evening a week in the school.
Thus far, the Coláiste has competed against schools such as Rockwell College, Loreto College Clonmel and CBS Bagnelstown, with the U19 Girls also achieving an impressive victory in their league match against Presentation, Clonmel.
As an extra practice session the Colaiste’s U16 Girls team recently competed in a friendly game against Christ King Secondary School, Cork. The girls travelled to Cork and took on the Cork regional champions from last year in a very enjoyable and entertaining game of basketball. Although unable to defeat the Christ King team on the day, the Cahir girls displayed an impressive range of skill and determination over the course of the game with outstanding performances from Niamh Myles, Laura Keating and Karen Keegan.
After Christmas the girls and boys teams from first and second year will begin their competitive fixtures – best of luck to all involved.
Christmas greetings
The Colaiste would like to wish a very happy Christmas and New Year to parents, staff and students of Colaiste Dun Iascaigh.   Beannachtai na feile oraibh go leir.
