CAHIR NOTES 17TH FEBRUARY 2010
ST PATRICKS DAY PARADE
It is great news indeed to hear that this year Cahir will once again have a St. Patricks Day Parade. Who could forget last year’s parade, when the sun was shining and the streets were packed with people enjoying the very colourful and successful event.
This year’s parade is already shaping up to be another success with several groups already on board to participate. The Scouts, Majorettes, Ceoltas and VTOS Groups are just a few. There will also be Arts and Crafts Displays, like an old apple press and butter churn and face painting on the square on the day.
Of course everyone is welcome to take part from Community Groups to Local businesses and the more the better. This year everyone is being asked to fill in an entry form for contact names and numbers etc., and will be asked to give €20 per group (no matter how many people are in the group) to meet the cost of insurance for the day, which is essential when organising any event. Entry forms will be available by the end of this week from The Enterprise Centre and must be returned by 10th March (once again to the Enterprise Centre) to allow time to organise the order of participants in the Parade.
The Parade will start at Woodview, continue down Abbey Street, on up Castle Street and finish in the Square. Each group will be contacted prior to the event to advise them of their place in the Parade. Any other instructions will be given closer to the day. So watch this page for more details and meanwhile try to get your group/organisation/business on board. Let’s see if we can make this year’s Parade even better than last year’s, it’s up to you. Then all we need is a bit of spring sunshine to make the day.
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS & ENHANCEMENT COMMITTEE
Cahir Tidy Towns & Enhancement Committee is a subcommittee of Cahir Development Association and is chaired by Andy Moloney. There have been many people involved over the years in keeping Tidy Towns alive but the past few years have seen the marks reach new heights.
The Chairman has credited this to a 5 year plan in 2007 to landscape the towns approach roads and the provision of planted tubs and hanging baskets around the town centre. This was drawn up in conjunction with South Tipp Co Co, Grangemore Landscapes and was in conjunction with Cahir Development Association.
Since their new found success in winning the Category D of the South Tipp Environmental Awards for small towns, the committee engaged in talks with other towns of similar size and found that if the Town of Cahir was serious about Tidy Towns it would have to have a town plan. With that in mind, the committee acquired the services of Frank Donaldson Consultants to draw up a plan. This is the same agency that drew up the 3 year plan that helped Emly to achieve their goal in 2009 and win the overall National Prize.
This could not have been done without the financial assistance of the South Tipperary Development Board who realise that by promoting such a venture there will be benefits for both Trade and Tourism and the overall development of Cahir.

Cahir Tidy Towns Committee receive Category 9 in Tidy Towns Awards
Andy Moloney states that while we have the backing of the Town Engineer and many of the Estates and Schools we still need better participation of Traders and Residents in other areas. This 3 year plan that is at a draft stage can be viewed at the Enterprise Centre. There are many recommendations by the consultants and all areas of the town have been accessed. The report that was drawn up is often quite critical and also often not what we would like to read about the condition of some areas of our town, estates and businesses. However, Frank Donaldson has provided a frank, independent report and to progress any further we really must accept and act on what he has reported.
The recent meeting was attended by Marie Phelan (Environmental Officer) Ann Ryan, Cahir Town Liaison Officer and Hilary Tarrant (Tipperary Volunteer Agency). Marie Phelan presented a Hamper and Cheque to the Cahir Tidy Towns Group as their winnings in Category D of the 2009 Environmental Awards. There will be a another meeting once Frank Donaldson reports back with his final Draft and suggestions and additions can still be made to ann.ryan@southtippcoco.ie

You can then make your suggestions or recommendations and be involved in the plans that are at present being drawn up for your town. Also you could ring Ann Ryan on 087 948 3061 with same or email her on ann.ryan@southtippcoco.ie
LIONS CLUB THEATRE DINNER
This year the Lions Club have chosen to show a wonderful play by local author Paddy Walsh.. It will be presented the highly thought of Fr. Mathew Players from New Inn. It was staged in New Inn last weekend and has already received much praise. Here is an extract about the play from a National Daily newspaper dated 6th February 1965.
“No Home Tomorrow” is the story of an old cobbler in a small town enamoured of a pet rabbit which supplies him and his churful companion Crowdle Coen with an absorbing interest. Other more malign influences are also at work on the old man however in the person of a vindictive niece-in-law who wants to get him out of the shop. The whole question of what happens to the unwanted old man is the great point of the play- a question very much for discussion at the present time. It is discussed in “No Home Tomorrow” with great humour, compassion and understanding by the young author from Cahir.”
When the play was originally presented by Cahir Dramatic Society in 1963, it was an immediate success both in its home town and at festivals, where it won an astonishing number of 12 awards at Charleville, Limerick, Wexford and Tipperary too.
The much acclaimed play will take place in Cahir House Hotel on Saturday 20th February at 8pm with a Dinner and on Sunday 21st February without a meal. Tickets are available from reception at Cahir House Hotel. It will cost €30 for the Dinner Theatre on the 20th and €10 for just the play on 21st.
Good luck to all and well done to Paddy, I really hope I can be there.

ROSS PHARMACY
I called in to see Beatrice and Hilda in Ross Pharmacy last Monday and was treated to a lovely facial done with Freeze 24-7 Age-less Skincare Products. This is a beautiful range produced by the same makers as Skincode, probably one of my favourite skincare ranges. Freeze 24-7 products incorporate cutting edge technology which works to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other common signs of aging upon application and it absolutely did, and immediately too!
This is not a cheap range, but let’s face it (excuse the pun) no good skincare range is. However, it seems we are back to the putting items away and paying an affordable amount towards them each week times and Beatrice assures me that this is the case with all their products. I also had threading done to tidy up my eyebrows and as I had never had it done before, I was delighted to discover that it was quick, painless and I had little or no redness afterwards and most importantly, I could actually go out in public without embarrassment (usually I have to wear dark glasses or a hat). Why not pop into Ross Pharmacy and check out the New Freeze 24-7 range, along with all the other old favourites.
POULMUCKA SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB
The Poulmucka Sports & Social Club will be taking their walk to the Nire Lakes (Weather Permitting) on Sunday next the 21st February. In the event of poor weather at the weekend, please ring before travelling in case there is a change of plans.
This should be a good workout following the Charity darts for Haiti in Poulmucka on Saturday 20th February. This is a worthy cause and a chance to help the less well off following their disaster. This is a fun Darts night and will start at 9.45pm sharp.
Subscriptions for the Trip to Scarborough are been taken at the moment and those intending to travel should give their names as soon as possible.
DUHILL DRAMATIC SOCIETY
Presents “It Runs in The Family” for the Haiti Disaster Fund.
Duhill Dramatic Society is staging their wonderfully entertaining “It Runs in The Family” written by Ray Cooney and directed by Michael Pollard. It will take place in St Pauls Community Centre, Clogheen on Saturday 20th February starting at 8.15pm. It is said to be one of the funniest plays performed in this area for many years. Tickets can be purchased at Vee Valley Fruit and Veg Shop, Clogheen and also in Clogheen Post Office, by ringing 087 7984929 or also from any committee member. Please support this fundraiser and enjoy the laugh and don’t forget all proceeds will go to the Haiti Disaster Fund. Tickets cost €10.
OUR LADY OF MERCY PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our Lady of Mercy win the U11 B Football final.
On a cold foggy morning in Duneske, Our Lady of Mercy took on Ballyporeen in the U11B Football final. The game began in a haze of fog, with both sides starting strongly. Dervla Buckley and Rachel O’Donnell were doing a good job at midfield while Andrea O’Donnell and Emily O’Donovan in the forwards were very impressive. The half time score was 3-1 to 1-1 in favour of Cahir.
The second half began with the sun eventually shining through and Ballyporeen had found another gear and before we knew it the gap was down to 2 points. Emma Quirke and Orla Cashman were working hard in the back line and did very well clearing the ball time and time again. Tori Downey replaced Emily in the forwards and fought for every ball. Our player of the day had to be Lauren Noonan in goal where she saved us on many occasions, sometimes from point blank range and because of those saves we held on for a 2 point victory on a score line of 4-2 to 3-3. The rest of our panel Lauren Fitzgerald, Katie Noonan and Chantelle Pyke all played their part during the year. Thanks to Ballyporeen for an excellent, exciting game that could have went either way. Well done to all.

DEBATING CLEAN SWEEP FOR ROCKWELL
Rockwell College claimed victory in the recent final of the Munster Schools’ Debating competition in fine fashion, claiming first and second place. The Final, which took place in UCC on Saturday February 6th, was also contested by teams from CBC Cork and Ard Scoil na mBraithaire, Clonmel. It was the first time that Rockwell has won the final of this competition, which started last October with seventy teams from across Munster. The winning team, Lennard Lowe and Jack Moloney successfully opposed the motion “That this house believes neutrality is immoral”, while the runners-up, Eva Cummins and Jack Jeffries, proposed the same motion. Simon Covney, TD, was the guest Chairman for the event. The winners will now progress directly to the All Ireland competition while the runners up will have an opportunity to compete for a place in that final against the runners up from Leinster and Connaught. Congratulations go to the teams and also to coach Ms Audrey O’Bryne.
