CAHIR NOTES 24TH FEBRUARY 2010

TRIATHLON FOR CAHIR
It is good to have some positive news for a change, and I am happy to confirm that Cahir has been targeted by Promoters to host a Triathlon event in the town on Saturday 10th July 2010. Triathlons are a growing sport and are being very well supported wherever they go. The people responsible for promoting this event estimate that up to 500 people will compete, and from their experience we can expect support from up to 3000 people, bringing an estimated €225k in revenue to the town.
With this in mind a meeting will be hosted by the Promoters of the Triathlon on Monday next 1st March at 7.30pm in Cahir House Hotel and everyone is invited to attend. Last Wednesday a meeting took place with South Tipperary County Council in relation to the Triathlon and they are equally enthusiastic about the event. The meeting was attended by a cross section of the community and the conversation soon turned to the possibility of resurrecting our Annual Festival in town and that the 10th July would be the perfect weekend to run it. With the 3500 people attached to the Triathlon expected on the Saturday of that weekend, it would give us a terrific head start.
Although the Triathlon would be run entirely by the Promoters, the organising and running an Annual Festival is something that will require the assistance of as many people in the town as we can muster. We would therefore encourage all interested parties to attend the Triathlon meeting on Monday 1st at which time we can also discuss the merits of organising a Festival.

CAHIR TIDY TOWNS & ENHANCEMENT
The chairman of Cahir Tidy Towns & Enhancement Group, Andy Moloney, has welcomed the news that there will be extended opening hours at both the Swiss Cottage and Cahir Castle for 2010. This is a much needed boost to Tourism in the area and puts the onus of the Tidy Towns Committee to have the surrounds looking well earlier in the season.
He has welcomed the 3 year Tidy Town Plan that is to commence with immediate effect and further discussions on it implementation will take place between the Schools, Residents and Tidy towns Committee in the near future.
This Plan is the work of Frank Donaldson, the man behind the plan that masterminded the Emly Tidy Towns success in 2009.
Anyone wishing to add their weight to the Tidy Towns Committee, by giving 1 hour a week, can do so by leaving their name with their Residents Association or by leaving their name in the Enterprise Centre C/O Andy Moloney. Over the past few years there has been great progress made. Anyone that took a look around on St Patricks Day last year could see the fun and excitement of the day was further enhanced by a background of a tidy town with clean buildings and neat flowerbeds to compliment the town.

DEBATING CLEAN SWEEP FOR ROCKWELL
Rockwell College claimed victory in the recent final of the Munster Schools’ Debating competition in fine fashion, claiming first and second place. The Final, which took place in UCC on Saturday February 6th, was also contested by teams from CBC Cork and Ard Scoil na mBraithaire, Clonmel. It was the first time that Rockwell has won the final of this competition, which started last October with seventy teams from across Munster. The winning team, Lennard Lowe and Jack Moloney successfully opposed the motion “That this house believes neutrality is immoral”, while the runners-up, Eva Cummins and Jack Jeffries, proposed the same motion. Simon Covney, TD, was the guest Chairman for the event. The winners will now progress directly to the All Ireland competition while the runners up will have an opportunity to compete for a place in that final against the runners up from Leinster and Connaught. Congratulations go to the teams and also to team coach Ms Audrey O’Bryne.

POULMUCKA SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB
The Poulmucka Sports & Social Club had another successful trek on Sunday last. Over 30 walkers were prepared for the Nire Lakes but due to heavy fog they had to change direction and head for Lake Muskery on the Galtee Mountains. This was the most difficult walk to date and was not helped by our guide Kenny (now named Tom Crean) who took us the difficult route.
Nevertheless, when the journey was completed and the grub arrived back at base we were glad to have completed the mission. There was a good sprinkle of new walkers with the group and it has been decided to keep it going for another while into the spring. There will be a handy walk this coming Sunday, where we will stay on level ground and walk from the Car Park in Cahir Castle to the Swiss Cottage and on along the new walk.
This walk will be suitable for families and runners but please wear sufficient footwear.
We will meet at Poulmucka at 12.30pm or the Castle Car Park at 12.45pm. Once again all are welcome. Total length of this walk will be almost 5 miles or approx 1 ½ hours. This will be an out and back course so anyone falling behind can be picked up on the way back.
The Cahir /Scarborough Challenge Trip is still open for names and deposits can be given to Tom Walsh or to Moloneys Bar.
Finally, well done to all who took part in the recent Haiti Charity Darts night last Saturday which was run by Martha and Co. Total amount raised was €500 and some new talent as unearthed for the Darts Team.
