CAHIR NOTES 3RD MARCH  2010

C.D.A. CHELTENHAM FUNDRAISER
I am delighted to announce that Cahir Development Association’s Cheltenham Festival Fundraiser has been given the go-ahead. It will take place for the 4 days of the Cheltenham Festival that takes place this year on 16th 17th 18th and 19th March and is definitely my favourite fundraiser of the year.
The ticket price for the four days this year has been dropped to €30, for which you get to pick a horse from each of the first four races on each day of the Festival. Your choices need to be in before 1pm daily, and can be telephoned (phone numbers and email address will be printed on the tickets and will also be announced next week in these notes) or e-mailed to us.
All you have to do is pick one horse for each of the first four races of each day. Points are awarded to all those that correctly pick out the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place winners in each race on each day. There will be a cash prize of €100 for the person with the highest points daily and at the end of this very exciting week, the person/group with the most accumulated points will receive a fantastic €1,000, the 2nd highest points winner will receive €300 and the 3rd highest points winner will receive €200. If, for any reason, you are not able to give us your daily choice before 1pm on the day, we will allocate the favourite to you.
As usual, this fundraiser would not be possible without the help many volunteers, Helen Quirke, Manager of Cahir Business and Training Centre being the most important, without her expertise this important fundraiser simply would not happen. Also the wonderful ladies in the B&T Centre who will take in bets via phone and email during the four days of the Cheltenham Festival.
Tickets are being printed as I write this and are available from the Business & Training Centre, members of the Management Committee of CDA and also from The Heritage and Dolan’s Supervalu from now on. This year we are asking that all ticket holders (if buying more than one ticket) would please use a different name on each ticket, as last year, tickets with the same name on more than one caused a bit of confusion. You will then have a ticket number, which is needed along with the name on the ticket when you send in your choices each day.
Joe Walsh has kindly given CDA the use of the shop space behind the new Sky Shop and next to the Lazy Bean, for which we are truly grateful. I will be there from 11am to 2pm each day next week, starting on Monday 8th March, to get the place set up and to sell tickets. It’s a great spot to be in, as we all get the full benefit of the atmosphere that is created in ‘The Lazy Bean’ and from people around the town. In the “Office” on the square will be Helen Quirke, myself and Callum Taylor, who has very kindly volunteered to help for the 4 days (and yes, he is related and my nephew).
Chairman of C.D.A, Patrick Caplice and Laura Donovan will also be at hand for cover where it’s needed. The funds from this entertaining week will go, once more, towards the Christmas Lights, so buy your ticket, get ready to place your bets and good luck to you all!

CAHIR PLAY WOWS AUDIENCES
The Fr Mathew players of New Inn performed a play by Cahir man Paddy Walsh for the first time in 47 years last weekend. The play “No home tomorrow” was last performed in February 1963 in Cahir by the then Cahir Amateur Dramatic Society, and was brought back to life by producer Tom Fitzgerald. Set in the early 1960’s the play covered emotive issues which are still pertinent today.
The cast put in a professional, authentic and flawless performance on each night in Cahir House Hotel, which was appreciated by the author Paddy Walsh and Bernie Boles who were both in the original cast in 1963. Paddy complimented the cast and the production team for their interpretation of his work.
MC, Gerry Duffy thanked the Fr Matthew Players for giving of their time freely in not only performing the play but also in erecting and dismantling the set which was a credit to them. He added that the proceeds would go towards worthwhile Lions Club projects, and in particular the Senior Citizens annual holiday in May this year. Cahir Lions President Cllr. Seanie Lonergan also thanked the cast for their efforts and Paddy Walsh for allowing his play to be adapted by the Fr Matthew Players. He made a presentation of a large framed photo of the cast on the stage, set on canvas to the Fr. Matthew Players at the end of the Sunday night performance.
Cahir & District Lions Club wish to thank Cahir House Hotel for providing the venue for both the Dinner Theatre on Saturday last and for the play on Sunday night. They wish also to thank the Fr Mathew players of New Inn for their commitment over the weekend and ensuring the success of the fundraising events. They wish to thank all the local sponsors of the raffles held there also.

CAHIR LIONS CLUB
The President of the Cahir and District Lions Club Cllr. Seanie Lonergan, would like to thank all those that contributed to the annual Church Gate Collection. Given the times that we live in, the response was very good. All monies will be dispersed to local charities. Seanie would like to remind the people that avail of the annual trip to apply only in writing, as he has to have written proof of intention to travel. This year the destination is Spanish Point in County Clare and there are only eighteen places in total allotted to the Cahir area. The Cahir Lions Club Committee, Seanie, Patsy, Jacqui, Tom, Liz and Gerry would like to thank the general public, all their sponsors and of course The Father Matthew Players for all their help in the past year.

CAHIR PARK AFC CENTENARY CHALLENGE
WATERFORD UNITED 3 SPORTING FINGAL 1
With a fine day dawning over a pristine Cahir Park pitch, the scene was set for an entertaining day’s football to mark the Centenary Challenge, another event in the calendar to mark 100 years junior football in Cahir.
Both teams were lead on to the pitch by Connor Cotter of the current Park U11 squad and Megan Ward, from the girls U13 squad – descendants of those who previously wore the Park jersey with pride.
First division United were first to press and had a couple of goal chances early, it wasn’t until the early part of the second half that the Dublin side began to take control and make any real inroads in the Blues’ rearguard.
With American Chris Konopka, a former Kansas player in US Major League football signing for Waterford from Fingal, many on either side had the measure of each other from very early on.
Waterford lead 1-0 at the break, scoring after 25 minutes – causing much discussion as luminaries from past and present in Cahir Park’s history took full advantage of the catering in the plush new club house that was opened for the day. The official opening will take place on 15th May this year. A cup of tea on the veranda now takes on a whole new meaning at the Park. What a credit to the committees from the last few years that such a fine building, fitting so neatly in the landscape, could come to fruition to add to the facilities in the club’s hundredth year.
On the pitch the Fingal defence, marshalled by an impressive Lorcan Fitzgerald, soaked up a lot of pressure with ex-Cork City and Derry City player, the Conna Maradona, Liam Kearney always involved.
Liam Buckley’s side got the equalizer when awarded a fortunate penalty-kick by ref Jim McKell when ex-Ireland international Glen Crowe tangled legs with Alan Carey 14 minutes into the second period.
Cahirparkafc.com’s man of the match, Waterford right-back Alan Carey, scored a fabulous second goal at 78 minutes when he placed the ball to the right of Brendan Clarke in the Fingal goal after a neat interchange with one of his strike partners.
There was still time for Stephen Henderson’s Suirsiders to turn the screw and add a third just before the final whistle to make it a happy day for them before the new season starts this coming Friday.
To Waterford United and to FAI Cup holders Sporting Fingal, added to the bill at short notice – the thanks of Cahir Park AFC. Thank you, you made our celebrations just a bit more special.

COLAISTE DUN IASCAIGH NEWS
COLÁISTE TEACHERS SHAVE OR DYE
The Shave or Dye campaign came to Coláiste Dún Iascaigh this week when a number of the staff of the college shaved or dyed their hair, all in aid of charity. Shave or Dye is a national fundraising campaign in aid of the Irish Cancer Society and is promoted by Today FM.
For the past week students and staff alike have collected sponsorship money for the charity. On Thursday afternoon “using your head” was given new meaning as the volunteers had their heads shaved or dyed, or had colourful hair extensions added. A number decided to go blond, the close shave was a popular choice for others, various colours and shapes were added in other cases. Many thanks to past-pupil Michelle O’Donnell of Allure Hair Salon, on-site hairdresser for the afternoon. On Friday the staff held a coffee morning with all money raised going to the Shave or Dye campaign. The total money collected will be known later in the week.

POULMUCKA SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB
The Poulmucka Sports and Social Club took a more relaxed walk on Sunday last along the banks of the Suir. We started at Cahir Castle Car Park and headed for Ardfinnan along the Swiss Cottage Walk and along the new extension. For a change of scenery we returned via the Clogheen Road. Duration of the walk was 1 ½ hours. Other more adventurous walkers headed for the Nire to investigate a walk for future reference. We were joined by some walkers from Clonmel and Kilmanahan and enjoyed the cup of Soup in Poulmucka on completion.
Subscriptions are still been accepted for the trip to Scarborough and anyone wanting to pay the full amount at the time of booking will be given the opportunity. Anyone with deposits paid will also be given the chance to take back what they have paid in before the flights are secured. For now, the committee would like to get an idea of numbers and a deposit could be given to Tom Walsh or any committee member as soon as possible. This trip is not confined to Social club members and will team up with the annual travellers to Scarborough from Cahir on weekend of the 10/10/2010. There will be no walk next weekend due to the match in Thurles as a lot of members will travel, but we hope to resume on 14th March with a stiff walk up Slievenamon or something similar.
The members of the Poulmucka Sports and Social club would like to offer their sympathies to the O’Donovan Family on the recent death of Tonys father, Larry O’Donovan of Coolmoyne and Cashel.
