CAHIR NOTES 10TH MARCH 2010
CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL FUNDRAISER.
By the time this paper comes out, the “Office” shop space behind the new Sky Shop and next to the Lazy Bean will be open for the Cheltenham festival fundraiser purposes. Once more, Joe Walsh has kindly given us the use of this shop space for which we are truly grateful. I will be there from 11am to 2pm each day this week until Friday 12th March, to get the place set up and to sell tickets. It’s a great spot to be in, as we all get the full benefit of the atmosphere that is created in ‘The Lazy Bean’ and from people around the town. Next week in the “Office” on the square during the Festival will be Helen Quirke, myself and Callum Taylor, who has very kindly volunteered to help for the 4 days (and yes, he is related and my nephew).
Tickets are also available from the Business & Training Centre, members of the Management Committee of CDA, The Heritage and Dolans Supervalu. This year we are asking that all ticket holders (if buying more than one ticket) would please use a different name on each ticket as last year, tickets with the same name on more than one caused a bit of confusion. You will then have a ticket number, which is needed along with the name on the ticket when you send in your choices each day.
All you have to do is pick one horse for each of the first four races of each day (phone numbers to ring and email are on the tickets). Points are awarded to all those that correctly pick out the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place winners in each race on each day. There will be a cash prize of €100 for the person with the highest points daily and at the end of this very exciting week, the person/group with the most accumulated points will receive a fantastic €1,000, the 2nd highest points winner will receive €300 and the 3rd highest points winner will receive €200. If, for any reason, you are not able to give us your daily choice before 1pm on the day, we will allocate the favourite to you.
Chairman of C.D.A, Patrick Caplice, Laura Donovan and the ever-present Tim Shanahan will also be at hand for cover where it’s needed. The funds from this entertaining week will go, once more, towards the Christmas Lights. So, buy your ticket, get ready to place your bets and good luck to you all!
CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION.
Members continue to take part in our Fitness classes in Duneske Leisure Centre. Last Wednesday the group spent the first half hour using the various machines and enjoyed time in conversation at the water fountain. All members and interested people are welcome to join in this beneficial activity.
We would like to thank Liam Kelly for a most informative talk covering safety in the home and the community. To contact Tipperary Community Safety Project please e-mail communitysafety1@eircom.net or Phone 062 82561.

OUR LADY OF MERCY PRIMARY SCHOOL.
The Primary School is taking part in the AIB Better Ireland competition to try to gain a grant of €5,000. This would be invaluable to us to help us buy extra computers for the children attending, but we need your help!!
Please vote for the school by texting Cahir followed by a space, then the letter A to 51303, as many times as you can before the closing date of Monday 15th March. Or you could also vote online at www.betterireland.ie Press vote now on the top of the purple toolbar, then choose your county from the list, Tipperary, then choose the branch Cahir, then vote for Our Lady of Mercy, enter your email address and you can once again vote as many times as you wish, but only with a different email address each time.
We really do need as many votes as possible, so if you can pass this on to a friend or group at work, all the better, as the more votes, the more money. It should only take a minute and it would make a real difference to us. Thank you for your support.
COLAISTE NEWS.
COLÁISTE SHAVE OR DYE UPDATE
There are a few sponsorship cards still outstanding, but to date over €3,500 has been collected by the staff and students of Coláiste Dún Iascaigh in their “Shave or Dye” campaign in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.
MUNSTER JUNIOR HURLING
Colaiste Dun Iascaigh 2-25; St. Ailbe’s 1-01.
Coláiste Dún Iascaigh had an easy win over St. Ailbe’s in the Munster Junior Hurling Championship. The Cahir boys dominated proceedings from the start and lead by 0-15 to 0-01 at half-time. Cahir added a further 2-10 to their score in the second half, with St. Ailbe’s scoring their goal late on.
MUNSTER INTERMEDIATE CAMOGIE
Coláiste Dún Iascaigh 2-06; Kilmacthomas 2-08
Coláiste Dún Iascaigh were aiming for a return to a Munster final after a two year wait, but alas just came up short against a Kilmacthomas side that were clinical in front of goals.
This was a cracking game with the action going from end to end. Cahir had marginally the better of the exchanges in the first half but Kilmacthomas improved in the second and powered ahead. The Cahir girls battled to the end and scored a goal late on from Eimear Myles. Unfortunately it was not enough. Losing by two points after such a gigantic effort is always a bitter pill to swallow, but the girls can hold their heads high having played with such determination and passion. They are indeed a credit to their school and coach.

SOUTH TIPP HOSPICE HEADSHAVE.
Cllr Seanie before the Head Shave |
Cllr Seanie during the Head Shave |
A sponsored Head shave/ leg wax took place in The Gatehouse on Friday 5th March last. It was in aid if the South Tipperary Hospice Movement. Some very brave men put on brave faces and had their heads shaved for this worthy cause. First to go bald was our very own Cllr. Seanie Lonergan (who actually looks good without hair!) along with Paul Frazier and Pat Doolan, fair play to them. Alice Ward and Paul Conway organised this most entertaining night and everyone did enjoy it. I’m not sure who else did what for the cause (as I had to go to a quiz in The Hill) but I will reveal all next week, including how much was raised. Thanks are definitely due to Steve Maguire of Allure for shaving all those heads amid a crowded pub and also due to Jason Maher for hosting the event, and lastly to all those kind people who generously sponsored or donated money for South Tipp Hospice Movement.

A great night’s fun was enjoyed and very well done to the winners of the Table Quiz, Declan and Mary Lonergan, Mick O’Mahony and Tony Bates with a great score.
After a tiebreaker round, second prize went to Bernard O’Connor, Dan Dowling and Seamus Hackett and third prize to Debbie and Michael Sweeney, Philip Lawlor and Cathriona Flynn. Ann Fitzpatrick won first prize in the Raffle.
Many thanks to all who sponsored the prizes and special thanks to quizmaster, Marie Murphy and to Trish, James & family for all their help and for the lovely food they served. The great sum of €973 was raised on the night.
Vera will be travelling to Haiti on 25th April with the Haven Charity.
Good luck to you Vera.
CAHIR COUNTRY MARKET.
Spring is definitely here with the arrival of bunches of daffodils at Cahir Country Markets. There is also the usual fine selection of fresh fruit and vegetables along with a beautiful display of bedding plants and tubs of fresh flowers that will put you in the frame of mind to tackle the tidy up of your garden after the particularly long winter. This is also the time of year to put up nest boxes and bird feeders are important as the birds get ready to nest, these are also available at the market.
Of course, there is still the lovely assortment of homemade fresh breads, cakes, pies, biscuits, scones and buns to tempt the palate. Not forgetting fresh eggs and honey too. There is also lots of home crafts on offer with some beautiful ideas for gifts. So make some time to visit Cahir Country Market and stay for a friendly cup of tea.
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS?
The Cahir Tidy Towns Group would like to send their deepest sympathy to the wife and Family of the late Brian Gallagher. Brian’s wife, Breda, is the vice chairperson of the group and our thoughts are with them at this time. The Tidy Towns meeting schedule for this week will take place at a later date.
