CAHIR NOTES 31ST MARCH

CENTENARY OF THE IRISH COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION.
An Post has issued a stamp to commemorate the centenary of the founding of the ICA on 25th March last. The stamp and first day cover were designed by John Conway. The ICA was founded on 8th May 1910. The first branch meeting, under the name of the United Irishwomen, took place on 15th May, 1910 in Bree, Co. Wexford. The objective was to organise a women’s rural organisation. The name was changed to the Irish Countrywomen’s Association in 1935.

Henry Reidy Post Master Cahir, presenting the ICA Centenary Issue stamp

There are approximately 12,000 members in almost 700 Guilds, both in urban and rural areas of Ireland today. It offers a network of support, education, social events and friendship to its members. It has been to the fore in demanding improved conditions and services for women. It has been successful in lobbying for improved healthcare, equal pay and improved working conditions and has also campaigned on issues such as adult education, rural electrification, water schemes and breast cancer screening.
The ICA organises a wide range of social, cultural and educational activities for its members. There is an ICA Adult Education College in Termonfechin, Co. Louth that has a wide range of courses available for members and non members alike. Further information is available on the website www.ica.ie
Congratulations to all the ladies who are part of this fantastic organisation, keep up the good work.

CAHIR TIDY TOWNS
Cahir Tidy Towns meeting was held last Wednesday, March 24th. We received a generous donation of €1000 from Mary Lonergan and Jean English of Cahir Bingo, to help with our wildlife programme, in conjunction with Cahir Anglers and Cahir Gun Club. We are inviting applications from individuals or resident’s associations to apply for funding towards any project that would come under the remit of the 3 year plan. As only small amounts of money are available for these - about €50 - such projects would include getting plants for flower beds. Please send in a plan of what you intend to do with any funding to "Cahir Tidy Towns" at the Enterprise centre or e-mail janette.kennedy@ireland.com.
There will be a blitz clean-up on the weekend of April 10th and bags will be collected the following Monday or Tuesday. Bags and gloves can be obtained at the County Council offices at Erasmus Smith House. Please submit accounts of any tidy-ups or environmental works to us at Tidy Towns, even if you are not attending meetings by the May Bank Holiday weekend. This is important for our application. Please also submit any photos. You can send them to the email address above or drop submissions into the Enterprise Centre.

NEWS FROM COLÁISTE DÚN IASCAIGH.
GREEN FLAG COMMITTEE

Transition Year students Graham Halley and Aisling Kenny attended the recent Cahir Tidy Towns Committee meeting and outlined their plans for the spring clean-up on the week of April 19th – 23rd. This is being done as part of the ongoing efforts to achieve Green Flag status for the college. The work of the college Green Flag Committee will also enhance the prospects of the Cahir Tidy Towns Committee in increasing the town marks in the National competition.

CARA GROUP
On Friday March 26th the Cara Group together with the Transition Year class organised a revision-style table quiz for first year students. Rounds based on subjects the students have been studying this year, such as Irish, Science and History, kept the students busy. General knowledge, sport and celebrity rounds were also featured. Well done to all involved.

SOCCER BLITZ
The annual first and second year soccer blitz was held in good weather conditions on the Coláiste’s soccer pitch on Thursday March 25th. With three groups of five teams altogether there were over 90 students playing. The final itself was a tense affair between Ian Flannery’s Real Madrid and Stephen Duggan’s AC Milan. The game was settled by a moment of magic from team captain Ian Flannery and ended with Madrid the winners by a goal to nil.
This was the fourth year of the blitz and by far the most successful. Almost €2,000 has been raised and great credit is due to all students who collected money. Special praise is due to Eoin O’Donoghue for collecting the most money.
