CAHIR NOTES 28TH APRIL 10
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS
The Cahir Tidy Towns Group will have a meeting on this coming Wednesday 28th April at 7.30pm. The main purpose of the meeting is to complete the 2010 Entry Form for the National Tidy Towns. Any groups that have before/after pictures of cleanups and planting can bring them to this meeting for inclusion in the plan. The closing date is on 24th May and the first round of judging will probably take place in the first week of June. Anyone intending to paint or renovate should be mindful of these dates. It is important to put the best foot forward this year as it is the first year of the 3 year plan and over the 3 years different areas will be targeted to achieve the overall prize for towns of our size.
Also, the Bird Sanctuary will get underway (as per recommendation by previous adjudicators) in the near corner of the inch field. Cahir Anglers and Cahir Gun Club members will co-ordinate this venture and this is also in conjunction with Cahir Bingo and Tidy Towns. If the ducks and geese that will be released into the sanctuary migrate into the river this would be a great attraction for tourists and children locally who can feed them from the bridge.
The recent Blitz Day on cleaning up the town proved to be very successful with large amounts of litter cleared.
This week the Transition Year students have been on a cleanup campaign as part of their Green Flag Project for the Colaiste and hopefully their efforts will be rewarded with a Flag later in the year. The council has been very supportive of Tidy Towns and the litter collection and it is important to note that while some people think that the litter is the Councils responsibility, it is we that litter and not the council.
Groups like Tipperary Disability Forum, Cahir Anglers, Cahir Gun Club, Cahir Bingo, Cahir Schools, Cahir Youth Group, Tipperary Volunteer Agency and many residents groups and individuals have all come on board with projects. If you can contribute in any small way to the cause of Tidy Towns in Cahir, you can contact the Chairman Andy Moloney, C/o the Enterprise Centre or phone 086-3609110 and we can include your efforts in the entry form.
Remember, if it is only for 1 hour for the summer it is a great help.

ROMANCE BLOSSOMS AT KILCORAN LODGE HOTEL
The organisers of the very popular afternoon tea dances at the Kilcoran Lodge Hotel near Cahir (on the old N8) are tickled pink that romance seems to be blossoming amongst a number of people that have met at the dances there over the past few months.
“There’s certainly a hint of romance in the air and a number of people have hit it off in a big way, “Jackie Mullen, manager of The Kilcoran Lodge told South Tipp Today.
The afternoon tea dances, which were launched in Kilcoran last January, tend to attract quite a few more women than men, and the hosts have also put out a call for more men to attend on this Sunday, 2nd May when the Cork entertainer, Finbar Dennehy will provide the music from 3.30 to 6pm.
TR Dallas, the man that brought us ‘Who Shot JR Ewing’ amongst many hit songs, will be on stage on this Saturday 1st May. The May bank holiday weekend marks a ‘Lisdoonvarna Reunion’ of sorts at the hotel and it promises to be a mighty ‘craic’ altogether.
And, if that wasn’t enough, the man they call ‘Mr Brown Eyes’, John Hogan is a forthcoming attraction at Kilcoran on the following Sunday, 9th May.

The parent’s council of Our Lady of Mercy Primary School would like to acknowledge with thanks the support we received in our recent fundraisers. Proceeds from the sale of shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day amounted to €1,125.00, while the book sale netted a total of €435.00.We would like to extend our thanks also to G P Corry Ltd, Cahir Business Park, who kindly donated the slates for the roof of the GP Hall. Also we would like to thank Michael Hearne of Premier Blinds for his help and assistance in replacing and repairing classroom blinds.
TAE KWON DO FOR KIDS
Instructor Brian Corbett, who has a is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do has started a programme for children in the Community Hall in Cahir. The classes take place on Saturdays from 4-5pm.
New members are always welcome to come and see how it’s done. One parent informed me that she has found it very good as her child is very quiet and it is a good way of meeting new friends. She added that the instructor is very nice and that every 3 months they go grading and this helps them to move up to different belts, which in her experience with her child makes them very proud of themselves.
This sounds like an ideal way to burn off excess energy as well, good luck to them.

COLAISTE NEWS
Green Schools Awareness Week a huge success
A very successful Green Schools Awareness Week organised by the Green Flag Committee was held in Coláiste Dún Iascaigh from April 19-23.
Various activities took place throughout the week. These included litter sweeps, cleaning a litter blackspot, collection of items for recycling, a debate and a poster competition. Congratulations to Laura Keeley (First Year) and Jacqueline Ni Fhogartaigh (Second year), winners of the competition. In a number of subject areas teachers taught sections from their courses dealing with environment and environmental issues during the week. An oak tree was planted as part of the campaign to increase awareness of reducing our carbon footprint. Marie Phelan, environmental officer with An Taisce, visited the college on Friday to assess progress made towards attaining the Green flag. Marie was very positive in her assessment and the college is now awaiting the formal report from An Taisce on whether the Green Flag will be awarded or not.
Coláiste's 1st and 2nd years are Munster Camogie Champions
Coláiste Dún Iascaigh were crowned Munster Champions after winning the Munster Camogie C Blitz on April 21st. This is the Coláiste's second Munster title this year, having previously won the Munster 7's C Competition in September. This time round the girls won the title following victories over teams from Cork, Limerick, Clare and defeating Laurel Hill of Limerick in a thrilling final. Well done to all involved.
Junior Hurlers miss out on Final
The Coláiste's Junior Hurlers narrowly missed out on a Munster Final spot losing to Nenagh in a cracking semi final on 22nd April by just two points. It was a great campaign for the juniors who accounted for St. Ailbe's and Killenaule en-route to the semi. They showed great tenacity to recover well from a poor start with a good second half performance but it was not enough for victory on the day. It is a testament to the team that they were down six points on three different occasions during the match and brought the deficit back to the bare minimum. There is an old adage however that goals win games and Nenagh managed to get them at crucial times. Ultimately Nenagh had just that extra edge to see them through at the end on a scoreline of Nenagh 4-8 to Coláiste Dún Iascaigh’s 2-12.
CAHIR PARK AFC
On Sunday the 17th of April 2010 Moyglass brought teams ageing from 6 to 10 years to play our academy teams in Cahir Park. The brilliant sunshine along with the large attendance added to this colourful exhibition of football from both sides. Both teams were evenly matched which meant that the standard of football was extremely high so here’s looking forward to the next game against Waterford Crystal on May 22nd that is to be played in Waterford.
There will be a sponsored walk on the 3rdof May at 2.30 pm from Cahir Park to The Swiss Cottage. Come along for a family day out, all children must be accompanied by an adult. Refreshments, face painting and activities at Swiss Cottage.
Don’t’ forget the Cahir Park golf classic in Cahir golf course on the 18th of June. Team slots are going fast get your team in soon.
This is a photograph of the Cahir Park B team who were crowned Division Four champions after a 5-2 win over Peake Villa on April 18th.
Well done to everyone involved.
