CAHIR NOTES 7TH APRIL
“TOWN CLEAN UP BLITZ DAY”
The Cahir Tidy Towns Group has organized a “Town Clean Up Blitz Day” on this coming Saturday 10th April. All Residents Groups and concerned townspeople are asked to pick up their special refuse bags from the council office in Erasmus Smith House during the week and inform the council of the collection point for the litter. The full bags can be left out for collection on Monday 12th April by the council staff.
Great progress has been made in the town over the past few years by all concerned and an all out effort to blitz the spring clean up will be of great benefit to the Town Judging later in the year.
Groups are asked to take a picture of the area before and after the clean up and send it into The Enterprise Centre as you might be in line for a Black Spot prize later in the year.
The Chairman of Tidy towns, Andy Moloney, said that a wildlife area will be provided in conjunction with the Gun and Angling clubs and also in conjunction with Cahir Tidy towns and is kindly sponsored by Cahir Bingo. The South Tipperary Disability Forum has added their support to the Tidy Towns Group and have pin pointed areas of concern to them.
The Chairman has said that everybody needs to be on board to achieve top marks for the town in 2010 and any estate that does not have a residents group might get together and organize a cleanup. Bags, Gloves and collection have been organized by the Council, so all that is required is an hour’s effort for litter picking.
It is hoped that the blitz will make people aware that we are active on the ground in trying to improve our town. Don’t forget to collect your empty bags supplied by the Council during the week and inform them of the point of collection.

COLAISTE NEWS
SENIOR CYCLE INFORMATION EVENING AT COLÁISTE
An Information Evening for parents of Third Year and Transition Year students will be held in Coláiste Dún Iascaigh on Wednesday April 14th at 8pm.
At this time of the year students in Third Year are anticipating moving on to the Senior Cycle Programme. The Career Guidance Counsellor has already spoken to them about the decisions they will be making. They have choices to make about moving directly to a two year Leaving Cert cycle, doing Transition Year or taking the Leaving Cert Applied option. Students currently in Transition year will have the option of following the traditional Leaving Cert cycle or taking the Leaving Certificate Applied option. Students who opt to take the traditional Leaving Cert have to decide on subjects for the Leaving Certificate.
These are obviously very important decisions. The meeting of April 14th is being held to provide parents with information about these options. The college’s Career Guidance Counsellor will provide information and advice to parents on the night. All parents/guardians of Third and Transition year students are invited to attend.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES?
Suffice to say that the girls on Wednesday night at indoor Camogie had a spring in their step was no exaggeration! The first game of the night between the Angels and the Magnets was a thriller to watch. Even though we were a bit short of players on the night this did not distract from the enjoyment. Drafted in for the night were Killian Halpin and Evan O' Regan who willingly threw on their helmets and got in on the action. Ciara Brenan and Emma Casey were in the centre for the throw in and both battled hard all night for their teams. Meabh Casey was helping out in the back line for the Magnets and was clearing well with the odd exception getting past her. Killian was in goal for the Magnets and was doing a superb job but not even he could keep out Caoimhe O Brien for the Angels as she swept the first goal of the game past him. Not to be out done the Magnets scored a fine goal from the hurley of Rosanna Kiely to bring the game level. Niamh Costigan then put another score on the board for the Angels which was closely followed by another from Camoinhe O Brien. Again the Magnets levelled with scores from Meabh Casey and Ciara Brenna. We had super play from Megan O'Brien and Caoimhe Costello for the Magnets and Anica Moloney for the Angels. With scores coming from Ciara Brennan and Emma Casey the game ended level pegging with 5 goals each. All to play for next week!
The second game saw the Nuggets and Elfs in action. Again the services of Evan and Killian were required and also Meabh Casey who played for the Nuggets. Leah O’Donoghue was on cracking form for the Nuggets, while Erin O’Regan for the Elfs chased every ball that came in her direction. Grainne White was fantastic on the back line for the Nuggets along with Fiona McEniry who has perfected the art of striking the ball on the run. Katie Halpin was just terrific for the Elfs who along with Margaret Reidy and Roisin McLoughlin put tremendous pressure on poor Killian in goal for the Nuggets. Margaret was clearing great ball for the Elfs while Roisin was executing fine passes across the goal line. New comer Elma Casey showed great promise and scored some lovely goals. With the final score 7-5 in favour of the Nuggets, again all is to play for next week. This Wednesday night will be our final indoor training session for this season, so all junior infant players up to 3rd class come along and enjoy our closing night at the Colaiste.
THE LATE PHILIP MCGRATH?
It is with great sadness that the people of Cahir learned of the death of Philip [Philly] McGrath of 50 Woodview, Cahir. Originally a native of Fethard where he was born 80 years ago, Philly took the emigrant boat to England where he was an employee of the London Water board and in between he was called up for National Service. Philly met and married his wife Bridget on Saint Patrick’s Day 48 years ago while in England. Philly and Bridget had four children Philip Jnr., John, Anne, and Maria who sadly passed away at the tender age of just 14.
Phillip and Bridget returned to Ireland in 1975 and settled in Cahir. He secured work in Murray Kitchens, Ardfinnan. Philly immediately became involved in the community, he became involved with the Cahir Park Soccer Club where he eventually progressed to Referee and he was a Park supporter until the end. When the Fas first initiated, he became a supervisor and he also worked in security during the Swiss Cottage Restoration. He became a member of Cahir Tidy Towns Committee. He was a founder member of the Cahir Youth Club, a member of Cahir Development Association and a member of Woodview Residents Association as well as the Fair of Cahir Committee.
Philly passed away on 7th March and was interred in Saint Mary’s cemetery on the 10th March. The Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr O Dwyer and Fr Knight. Apart from his immediate family, Philly is survived by his sister Mary Ashby and his grandchildren. The town of Cahir offers its sympathies and grateful thanks to a great friend. His like will not pass this way again, may he rest in everlasting peace.
Phil and his family have long been good friends and neighbours of mine. Phil was a one of a kind, someone who was always involved in the community in some capacity. He was also a true gentleman. He will be missed by all.

SHAME ON YOU
A lady has emailed me with some rather unsettling news. She has been having problems with somebody taking things from her child's grave in Cahir. This hasn’t happened once or twice but quite a few times and it is making this lady very upset. She has good reason to believe that someone from Clogheen is doing this and that is why she has asked me to put it in the Cahir notes.
Shame on you whoever are, this lady has clearly been through enough and does not need someone adding to her troubles.
A BIT OF EASTER HUMOUR
Q: What do you call rabbits that marched in a long sweltering Easter parade?
A: Hot, cross bunnies.
Q: What do you call ten rabbits marching backwards?
A: A receding hareline.
READERS NEWS AND VIEWS
Once again on an important weekend in the social calendar, many people discovered that the only Bank Machine in town was out of order all weekend, making it impossible to obtain cash without driving to another town. So once again I am asking, why is it that there is not at least one other outdoor cash machine in town? It has been proven time and time again that one machine is not sufficient to support a town of this size.
If you have any news, views or notes for the Cahir page, you can contact me anytime on 086 1022014 or email me on caplicetaylor@hotmail.com. By Sunday at the latest please as that is when I do the notes. Thank you.
