CAHIR NOTES 19TH MAY 10

CAHIR TIDY TOWNS
At the Cahir Tidy Towns Group meeting last Wednesday Carmel Dolan of SuperValu in Cahir presented Residents Groups within the town with High Visibility Vests and Supervalu cleanup kits. She commended the work that has been done by all involved in Tidy Towns Group over recent weeks.
The Tipperary Volunteer Agency have offered assistance in many areas where some manual work is involved and will be out and about on Thursday for some rough work and on Mondays & Tuesdays for lighter jobs such as painting etc. Anyone that would like to volunteer some free time for this worthy cause can contact our coordinator Kay (also a Volunteer) who has been given some space in the council offices or you can call 052-7468900.
Irish Rail have been contacted and also the owners of the huge unsightly Billboards and will cooperate with the Tidy towns Committee to make an effort to increase our marks. There are many individuals, both residential and commercial who will conduct their own redecorating over the coming weeks and are sure to brighten up the streets for us all to admire.
The committee has forwarded funds that were generously donated to the group by Cahir Bingo Group and to various planting projects around the town.

Anyone visiting the Inch Field this week will notice that a holding pen has been erected to help acclimatise a group of Mallard Ducks into the river. If all goes well and the ducks are happy in their surroundings they will hopefully return to this part of the river every year.  The committee ask that people respect the bird sanctuary as the ducks will be a great attraction in the river. It is hoped that children will come down to feed them and in this way help them to get used to people. The area will be covered by CCTV once the ducks have arrived to keep them safe while they grow. This project is part of the 3 year plan for the town that included the introduction of wildlife to the area. This is a joint effort with Tidy Towns and Cahir Development Association, along with the help of Cahir Gun Club & Cahir Anglers and with the financial assistance of Cahir Bingo Group and Bill Coffey, Plant Hire.
“Cahir should be one of the busiest inland towns for Tourism in the South and we are not capitalizing on it” Chairman of Tidy Towns Group, Andy Moloney said. “If Cahir was thriving as a busy Tourist Town it would automatically generate business in shops, eateries, hotels, B&B’s and many of those businesses in turn would have to hire extra help. This in itself would generate revenue for the area. We need to utilise the 100,000 visitors that come to the town each year.”
“We are all only too aware of the economic situation and for the foreseeable future we will have to gather as a community to help ourselves and I would like to think that we are doing that. As the phone rings everyday with someone offering to help in some way it is very heartening for the committee, and while it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to attend meetings, it’s all about getting work done on the ground.”
With this in mind, the Chairman said “The Judges are coming and together we can make a difference”.
The next meeting will take place on Wednesday 3rd June at 7.30pm in the Shamrock Lounge. The next Blitz Cleanup will take place on Tuesday evening of the 2nd June. Bags and gloves are available from Kay (Tidy Towns Group) at the council offices in the mornings only.

POULMUCKA 5 MILE RACE.
The eagerly awaited Poulmucka 5 miler has arrived.
On Friday 21st May at 7.30pm sharp a record entry is expected at the Poulmucka Cross Roads for the annual event which has been running for a number of years and is organised by the Poulmucka Sports & Social Club and Clonmel AC. Local athlete and secretary Niall O’Ceallaigh will hope to compete for the Over 40 prize, while committee member Tom Cahill will hope to take the over 55 honours. Our other committee member Kate McLoughlin has made a comeback with the Annerville 10k last week and will hope to challenge some of her colleagues in the senior ladies.
The Sports & Social Clubs Miss Cahir entrant of last year, Keeley Tideswell hopes to be back as a major contender, but as competition heats up it will not get any easier to collect the €200 prize on offer for both the first Man and first Woman home.
There are many newcomers to the road racing circuit this year and once again Liam Casey and James O’Brien have been proving that they are a match for anyone, while Rosie Casey and Helen O’Ceallaigh will complete the husband and wife duo on the night. Maybe we could have a prize for the fastest husband and wife combo over the line in which surely Dick O’Gorman and Miriam would be favourites.
The local Club have been very active all year with walks and adventures and we hope to see stewards assemble at 6.45pm on Friday evening to give a hand.
Teas and refreshments will be served to all athletes and anyone staying a little later can be assured of a good night and maybe hear Niall O’Ceallaigh sing….
So Friday evening at 7.30pm, entry €10, on a good course with plenty refreshment assured and good luck to all.
