CAHIR NOTES 2ND JUNE 10

TREES IN THE SQUARE.
It has been suggested by the South Tipperary County Council under the town enhancement scheme that the trees in the Square be removed. Cllr Seanie Lonergan is vehemently opposed to this move, as are the majority of the townspeople. The Cllr. urges people to voice their opinion in the suggestion box at Cahir Library. The County Council is contravening their own forward plan by attempting this, as the trees are a protected entity. Cllr Lonergan says that this move will be met with strong opposition.

A Cake Sale will take place on Sunday 6th June in aid of the recent paintwork done in St. Paul’s Church. It will take place in the Butler Charteris Hall beside St. Paul’s between 2pm and 4pm. This is one of my favourite sales as there are not only cakes for sale but also books and bric a brac, a great way to spend the afternoon. Don’t miss it.

YOUNG WOMENS CLUB
A new Club has opened for Young Women aged 12-17 years. It takes place on Tuesday evenings from 7-8.30pm in the Youth Centre, behind the old VEC building on Church Street in Cahir.
Why not come along and take part in art, sports, beauty nights and much more.
Have your say in what goes on. Only €2 per week.

FOUL FORM
It has been brought to my attention and not for the first time that people are not only walking dogs on the fields in Duneske but that the dogs are fouling on the playing fields too.  This has become a very serious health and safety risk with so many children playing sports on the fields every day, especially as the summer camps are about to start there shortly. There is nothing more upsetting than to have a child upset after falling on to this filth and it simply cannot continue. Many people seem to feel that the pitches are ideal for walking dogs, but dogs are NOT allowed on the playing fields for any reason.

CAHIR TIDY TOWNS.
The Cahir Tidy Towns Group will hold their next meeting on Wednesday 9th June at 7.30pm sharp. The ducks have been released into the release pen in the inch field and will remain here for a few weeks while the get used to people and the environment. The local Gun Club and Cahir Anglers will release a few at a time in the hope that they will stay around the protection of their habitat. This project between the Tidy towns, CDA, Gun Club, Cahir Anglers, Bingo and Bill Coffey JCB, is about conservation of wildlife and is step 1 of a 3 year plan. Children are encouraged to come down and have a look at them and the general public is asked to respect them. There has been evidence of some anti social drinking at the back of the castle and it is hoped that this will not upset the birds. We hope that the authorities can get on top of this situation as there is a bye law in place in the town to curb drinking in public places to sort this out.
Also, the Salmon statue has arrived back from the By-Pass all cleaned up and looking well beside the footbridge into the Inch Field. There has been evidence of many buildings being painted and many more on a promise, but we must keep on top of the Litter. Planting has been carried out by Grangemore Landscapes but we need to stay on top of the maintenance. The Tipperary Volunteer agency will be active on the ground this week but we need more people to commit to areas outside their own doors to complete the maintenance plan. Anyone interested in helping please contact Derek on 086-7721067.
As reported in these notes previously, the option to restore the Fountain in the square is been hampered by the current trees surrounding it. Our experts have told us that any restoration on the fountain will be short lived unless the trees are replaced with a more suitable tree for this area and at present plans are on display in the library. The local council office would welcome any positive comment or suggestions. The display shows how the proposed plan will look and although it is a change, it is not too bad looking at all. It is important to clarify at this stage that this is only a proposed plan by South Tipperary County Council. Cahir Tidy Towns or Cahir Development Association is not part of the proposed plan, but you could be. Now is the time to give your input through the suggestion boxes, have your say and be involved in any changes in your town.
The important part is to keep up the good work and remember the Judges are coming and this could be the week. The next meeting will take place in the Shamrock lounge on 9th June 2010 at 7.30pm.

THE CRAFT GRANARY
The Craft Granary Church St Cahir is pleased to announce an exhibition of etching and oil paintings by Damien MC Carron. It will take place from 1st – 29th June.
His work involves two techniques, the etching process and oil painting, both are based on landscape. What interests him is the play of light that can be achieved through both mediums. He has always had a fascination with landscape since his early days in college and now he hopes to take this to a new abstract level. The ever changing countryside of Ireland inspires him. He likes to try and capture the mood and the colour of open natural spaces and he tries to create a sense of peace and calmness in his work.

A BIG SUMMER FLING IN KILCORAN
Having enjoyed a great season since it kicked off in January, afternoon tea dancing at Kilcoran Lodge Hotel will enjoy its ‘final fling’ on this coming Sunday, 6th June before taking a break for summer.
And, to celebrate the occasion, Catherine & Images, one of the top attractions on the dancing scene, will be on stage for a mighty hooley on Sunday.
As always, there’ll be lots of waltzing, quick stepping and jiving along, of course, with some delicious tea and buns to keep the energy levels up. And, if that wasn’t enough, Kilcoran Lodge Hotel have laid on a special post dancing menu so you can tuck in and enjoy some great food from an extensive menu after the dancing.
What more you ask for? .... Confirmation, perhaps, that afternoon tea dancing will be back in Kilcoran in October with all the top names, Michael Collins, Peter Burke, Patrick O’Sullivan etc. Contact 052 – 7441288 for more information.

THE COOKIE JAR MOVES ON
The stallholders at Cahir Farmers Market are sorry to lose the Cookie Jar stall which has just finished trading at Cahir Farmers Market.  Cate McCarthy, who originally comes from Massachusetts, tested her idea to provide American style biscuits and deserts, at the Market.
The idea proved right for her.  She has now expanded her business and is supplying to customers in many parts of the country.  Cahir Farmers Market stallholders are glad that the 'Market' was able to offer a stall to a start-up business, which has been able to build a larger business.  We wish Cate well.
Cate wishes to let her customers know that her Cookies will still be at Cahir Farmers Market, on Louis and David O’Connor’s stall.
Cahir Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning from 9-1pm in The Granary car park in Cahir.

THE LATE MICK CLEARY
Michael Cleary   1915 – 2010. The family of the late Mick Cleary of Loughloher, wish to thank sincerely all those who offered their sympathy and support following their recent bereavement. We would also like to thank the A & E staff of South Tipp General Hospital in Clonmel, who took care of dad during his final hours.
Beannocht de lena anam dilis.

CONDOLENCES
Sympathies are extended to Gerry Duffy and family of Mitchelstown Road, Cahir. Gerry’s sister Maureen (Kelly) of Phibsboro in Dublin, sadly passed away last Thursday 27th May. May she rest in peace.

POULMUCKA SPORTS & SOCIAL CLUB.
The trip to Scarborough will take place from the 8th October to the 11th October, 2010. Some athletes from the club will challenge the Yorkshire Boys over the Scarborough Coast 10k trip on Sunday 10th October. This event was covered by the BBC last year and attracted over 800 runners. The event is sponsored by McCain’s of Frozen Food fame and also includes a fun 3km run. This will be the end of the clubs road running campaign for the year as we will host the County 10 miler in August in the build up to the trip. Last week it was reported that we might be able to run this race in conjunction with an Open race but seemingly this cannot happen as we need to apply to the county board for permission.
A deposit of €100 is required by the Bank Holiday weekend in June to secure flights which will leave Cork on Friday Noon and return on Monday evening via Manchester. All deposits must be handed to Tom Walsh or Andy Moloney a.s.a.p.
Those interested in travelling from Cahir need to give deposits to Tim Shanahan before this date also. The next meeting of the Club will take place on Thursday 10th June at 9pm sharp.
