CAHIR TIDY TOWNS COMPETITION LAUNCH?
Cahir Tidy Towns Wednesday Club did a complete power wash and paint of the Market Square last week and it looks very well now. This coming Wednesday 30th June, we will meet at Tobar Iosa while another group will meet in the Castle Car Park for some painting.
Wednesday 7th July we will meet at the Railway Station to tackle that area and we will also have a brief meeting in the open air before we finish for the evening.
A Church Gate collection has been applied for and we will also launch the Cahir Local Tidy Towns Competition. This Dolan’s SuperValu sponsored competition had great interest last year but the Judges said that some gardens that were not entered would have won if they had entered.
So, if you think your garden is up to scratch, entry forms are available from the local Council Offices in the Erasmus Smith House or you can call 052-7441322 for details. The closing date for Entries will be 23rd July and a cost of €5 per garden will apply.
Chairman Andy Moloney said that the goodwill shown to Tidy Towns has surpassed all expectations and that those not directly involved with the group are also doing their bit for the town.
You can help in your own area by identifying a spot that needs attention, taking a photo before doing work on it and another after the event. We will include this in the entry form next year and try and increase our national marks.

BIRD WATCHING IN CAHIR
The swans and their little signets are really one of the most beautiful sights I have seen in Cahir this summer so far. The crowds that have gathered to watch the local celebrities in their often unsteady progress as they learn to adapt to life on the river is heartwarming. From the time that the eggs were laid, people watched with interest to see what would happen and since the signets have emerged from their eggs the bird watching has increased tenfold. Apparently they have now passed under the bridge and continue to thrive in our beautiful river. So, keep watching!
The famous mother and her babies enjoying the River Suir in Cahir

It seems that the swans are not the only birds locally that are learning to adapt to the river as the 50 ducklings and 2 geese that were kindly acquired and housed by Cahir Gun and Angling Clubs are also thriving in the sanctuary in the Inch Field. They will be released shortly in the hope that they will return to nest in Cahir each season. Please feel free to bring them some bread to eat as it is also hoped that they will become used to being fed by the public and they will make a lovely added attraction on the river.
I have also learned that the Dove Cote at the start of the Swiss Cottage Walk is being occupied on a regular basis by nesting pigeons and other birds too. This is also very good to hear. Although I feel I should mention that for some reason people throw litter into the dove cote which, because it is locked looks very unsightly until it is cleared out. To those that throw litter there, please take your rubbish/cans/ bottles to the recycling bins in the car park just down the steps. In this way we can continue to encourage the wide variety of bird life in Cahir and enjoy watching them live their very busy and often entertaining lives.
IRISH HEART FOUNDATION
A Church gate Collection will take place in Cahir for the Irish Heart Foundation on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of July. Please support this worthy cause.
ROSEMOUNT NOTES
The regular monthly clean-up in the Rosemount area will take place on TUESDAY NEXT, 6TH JULY AT 7:30 P.M. We ask that as many people as possible from the various areas of the estate participate in this. As stated in the Tidy Towns Bulletin, the judging for this year’s competition is in progress at this time. A litter-free area will make a difference. Thanks to all who have been helping so far.

BEECHPARK RESIDENTS
It is time again to clean out the attics as we will have a skip for the residents on Friday 9th July. It will be picked up on the 10th July.
Thanks again to all those who play the 50/50 Draw. It is the money collected for this which allows us to pay for the skip, flower beds and the painting of the poles. This was brought to our attention by the Tidy Towns Group. Since these things have been done everyone has commented on how well Beech Park is looking. Of course, Willie is keeping the grass cut to perfection, so hopefully the Tidy Towns Judges will give us a mention.
The last 9 winners of the 50/50 draw were; Linda Healy, Christy Baker, Breda Donoghue, Tara Spencer, Chi Chi Caplice, Ita Peters, John Shakeshaft, Margaret Griffin and Kevin Hubbard. Congratulations to all.
The Residents would like to extend their sympathy to the Hanraghan Family on the death of their Father. Rest in peace.

HEAD SHOP BILL UNWORKABLE – Ó SNODAIGH
Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh has described the Criminal Justice (Psychoactive Substances) Bill published today as unworkable and far short of what is needed.
He said “The Bill is unworkable. It fails to put in place the infrastructure that is needed to tackle the emergence of new dangerous drugs in an ongoing way. It contains a vague definition of a psychoactive substance. So-called legal highs are being invented at a rate of one per fortnight, with this Bill the government is proposing to assign to Garda the role of identifying each of them. In reality this job requires expertise and input from science, the medical profession, pharmaceutical industry, addiction treatment services, the community and Garda. Assigning this task to Garda alone is simply unfeasible.”
Mr Ó Snodaigh added “Without a new Authority bringing together the necessary knowledge and experience, like that proposed by my own Bill published in April last, the Garda won't have a hope in hell of using this legislation to effectively tackle head shop drugs. The new Authority proposed by my own Bill is needed to guide and assist Garda, Customs and the Courts to identify the psychoactive substances in question, the forms they take, what they look like, how they are used and their street names etc.”
He concluded, “In addition to the civil law provisions contained in the Justice Minister's Bill there is ultimately an admission by government that the criminal offences contained are unworkable and wide open to challenge. By Minister Ahern's own admission the sections providing for civil prohibition orders will be the crux of the state's response. The suggestion that the emergence of a society-wide new drugs crisis can be responded to by allowing individual Garda to seek an order from a district court, to prohibit a specific individual from selling a specific substance, beggars belief”.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Mary O’Donovan and Jonathan McLoughlin on their recent engagement. Best wishes from all your family and friends.
WELL DONE
I would like to say well done to musician/song writer Fran Garry Marnane who was one of 10 finalists to compete in this year’s “Tipperary International Song of Peace” Competition which took place in The Excel Theatre on Sunday the 20th June. Although Dave Murphy, won with his song “love is all we need”, Fran’s beautiful rendition of a song that she wrote called “Sweet, Sweet Harmony” gave her a most respectable 4th place. Fran is a hugely talented vocalist, bass player and songwriter who, I have no doubt will be recognized for her song writing ability in the future. Good on you Fran.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Wishing a very happy birthday to Travis McLoughlin from Barnora who will celebrate his 1st birthday on the 4th July. Lots of love from Mam, Dad, big brother Joshua and all your family.
Birthday wishes also go to Carmel Curry who will celebrate her 50th birthday on 10th July. Best wishes from family and friends.
