CAHIR NOTES 12TH JULY 10

CAHIR GO LÉIR FESTIVAL, 2010.
At first it was disappointing for the committee when we realised that for the first Festival in Cahir in 7 years it was going to rain. However, we were delighted to see that rain or not the people still came to the Square to see the show, so even though some things had to be cancelled, the show went on. Tipp FM’s Premier Afternoons Show with Norman Morrissey broadcasted live from The Square kicked off the weekend’s entertainment, while the stage was being built and the sound system was sorted out.
Mick Martin opened the Festival a little later than planned (as his flight was delayed) and had a great chat with our Compere, Gerry Duffy on stage before accepting a little gift for his birthday from Festival Chairman, Pierce Connell. In true festival form Johnny B and the Boogie men braved the weather to round off the evening’s entertainment to put on a fantastic performance and even the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd gathered on the street who danced until they finished.
Saturday saw more rain as the TRI3 Series event took place but it was a certainly a great success and ran smoothly with no injuries other than a broken thumb that happened on the way to the start of the event. By all accounts, the athletes thought it was a fantastic course and would love to compete here again. Well done to Tony Griffin, Paddy Quinn, Tomas Madigan and all those involved in the TRI3 Series Triathlon for putting on such a tight show and for clearing it all away so quickly afterward too. They would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Cahir for putting up with any disturbance or inconvenience caused. Well done also to all the local people who took part in the Triathlon, I know Ger Niland made very good time!
Cahir Farmers Market not only joined in the craic during the Cahir Go Léir Festival to operate for just the occasion in the Square on Saturday 10th July but also stayed open till 3pm. They will be back in their usual spot in the Granary car park this Saturday. Louise and Caroline O'Connor had strawberries and cream, there were new potatoes from Michael English, live music by Maurice, "Balloon Magic" for the children, Butter making with Jim and Sr. Eileen, and there were also some visiting local craft stalls.
From Erica and Simon Van Horn, a couple who publish their own very interesting books, Hilary O'Connor, with her range of quality fabrics and materials, Maria Mulcahy with the Knockara Pate stall and locally crafted timber bowls and platters. Also, Audrea Hassett and Norbert Thul who are artisan producers of gourmet chutney's, relishes, and pickles, to Mericia FitzGerald from Ballylooby, who was cooking and selling her home made German type sausages. All this added to the festival atmosphere.

Saturday evening’s saw the Cahir House Hotel Queens make their introductions and Kopy Kat Killers put on a fantastic show while the crowds gathered in a marquee put up for the night.
The Parade, sponsored by The Heritage and The Lazy Bean passed through the Square on Sunday with much applause from the huge crowds gathered as the rain held off and the day stayed fine. With Premier Harrier’s leading the way with horses and hounds, the impressive Celtic Thunder Motorbike Group, Cahir Bingo, The Abbey Tavern with the Umpa Loompa’s, and commercial such as Keith Cabs, Batman and Robin, SuperValu and much more made this a parade to remember. The Best Float on the day was awarded to Cahir Community Bingo and the Best Boat Float was deservedly awarded to The Abbey Tavern. Well done and thank you to all who took part.
The Festival Queens Competitors, sponsored by Cahir House Hotel then took to the stage where they were interviewed by Gerry, after which the Queen of the Festival was announced. In 1st place, winning €500 and a weekend away in Lismore House was Niamh Delahunty, representing The Bell, in 2nd place, winning €300 and representing The Heritage was Bernadette Dovermann and in 3rd place, winning €200 and representing Cahir Development Association was Sinead Phelan. Mary Ellen Flynn who was the last Queen of the Fair presented Niamh with her crown, sash and cup and Ray McDonnell, Marketing Manager for Cahir House Hotel presented all the ladies with their cheques. Chairman, Pierce Connell then presented each of the girls with a token of our appreciation. Well done and thank you to all the brave girls that entered the competition, you are all queens in your own way. Thank you also to the Judges, Brenda Burke and Maureen Calvert who had to make difficult choices.

The Funday Sunday in the Inch Field was an astounding success. There were many stalls with a range of lovely things to buy, children’s entertainment, lots of tasty barbequed food, and of course the hugly popular Dog Show, sponsored by Darren Ward Jewellers. There were 70 entries this year and Maureen Calvert and granddaughter Aine were run off their feet. Thank you to them both and all who helped to make the Funday Sunday a very entertaining afternoon.
The only casualty on Sunday was the ever popular Crazy Boat Race, sponsored by Dolan’s SuperValu. Unfortunately the river was assessed by the experts and deemed too fast to run the race safely, so the decision to postpone (not cancel!) was reluctantly made. It will be rescheduled for another weekend that is yet to be decided, as rain is again forecast for most of the week which will lead to a further rise in water level. The competition is still open as we now have more time. So, watch this space and keep your boats at the ready as we will be contacting all those who handed in Entry Forms to inform them of a new date for the Crazy Boat Race, either get your entry form from the Enterprise Centre, Market Yard, Cahir or email me and I will send you one. We will make a day of it whatever happens.
The evening’s entertainment on Sunday was provided by firstly Freeway, who are Charlie O’Neill and Pat Buckley, they stepped in last minute due to a cancellation and impressed the crowd with their set. Thank you to them. The Cahir go Léir festival came to a close with a fantastic performance by Knights of Leon and the crowd gathered really enjoyed themselves, singing along and dancing too. Thankfully the rain stayed away for the whole day and made it the most memorable day of the Festival.
Well done also to Barrack Street who suffered with the weather too but had a great weekend all the same.
There are always so many  people to thank after an event like this that it will have to be done in two parts, some this week and some next. But firstly the committee would like to thank the residents of Cahir for any disturbance or inconvenience caused during the weekend, South Tipperary County Council, South Tipperary Development Company, an Gardai for doing a great Rescue and Dive Club, all the community groups that participated, all sponsors, all the volunteers for the TRI3 and the festival, the brilliant Gerry Duffy, Paul Caplice, Kenny Garden Sheds, Grangemore, Craft Granary, Enterprise Centre, Cllr. Seanie Lonergan and both Girls and Boys Primary Schools in Cahir. More next week...

Next Wednesday (14th July) is the Walkthrough Town Litter Pick. Anyone interested in giving a hand is more than welcome.
The closing date for entries to the Dolan’s SuperValu Local Tidy Town Competition is Friday 23rd July. Entries will be accepted at the Council Office at €5 each. Fill in a category that suits you for a chance to win up to €500 in vouchers.
Many Thanks to the Cahir Gun & Angling Clubs, Cahir Bingo Group and Bill Coffey for the Wild Mallard and Geese Project that has seen all the ducks released onto the river. They are proving quite an attraction with locals and tourists alike.
There is a great community spirit about the group and if everyone could do a little in their own area we would be well on our way to National success. It only takes one to start and more help will follow.
Great work was indeed done and has made a huge difference, well done to Tidy Towns Group.
