CAHIR NOTES 25TH JULY 10

CRAZY BOAT RACE

The Crazy Boat Race which is sponsored by Dolan’s Supervalu will go ahead on the rescheduled date of Sunday 1st August. Posters with prize details are up around the town. The race had to be cancelled at last minute during the Cahir go Leir Festival due to high water in the river.

The Committee has decided that since we are going to run the boat race we may as well try to make a day out of it too. We intend to have a similar Field Day as the original Funday Sunday of the  Cahir go Leir festival from 2-6pm with live Music, hopefully even more stalls (please call me for details), children’s entertainment and BBQ too, but it is too soon to have another  Dog Show so that will have to wait till next year. All we need now is the weather, fingers crossed and enjoy!

TIDY TOWNS EXTEND CLOSING DATE
The Cahir Tidy towns Group have extended the closing Date of the Dolans Super Valu local competition to Friday 31st July due to the amount of late interest. This will most definitely be the closing date as judging of hanging baskets needs to take place while they are in full bloom.
The litter pick last week was abandoned due to poor weather and will meet again this Wednesday at 7pm in the Castle Car Park, all are welcome.
There was some disturbance to the duck project last week with some youths throwing stones and people are asked to be vigilant and report any wrongdoing to the Gardai if they notice anything.
There have been many positive comments about the improvements around the Town and everybody who has made an effort is to be complimented. Residents are asked to tidy outside their own doors for the next few weeks in an effort to maintain the work already completed.

CAHIR TO SCARBOROUGH TRIP
This Friday 31st July will be the last day to secure your seat to Scarborough in October. The trip will commence on Friday 29th October and return on Monday 1st November.
For further information on the trip please contact Andy Moloney or the Enterprise Centre, Market yard on 086-3609110.

LIONS CLUB
On behalf of the Cahir Lions Club, Seanie Lonergan would like to thank all those that donated their used spectacles. Seanie said that there was a huge response in Cahir and the surrounding villages. The third world will benefit greatly from these collections. Apart from the eyesight test, the volunteer medical people can test for other ailments like Diabetes and so on. The collection yielded around 500 pairs of spectacles.

TIOBAR IOSA?
Cllr Seanie Lonergan is grateful to Teresa Lafford for letting him have this rare poem .It was written by Laura McCraith who was born in Loughloher in 1870. Before soldiers left to fight in the wars they used to pray and take three pebbles from the well.

TIOBAR IOSA---WELL OF JESUS
A mountain spring in its stone ring
beneath the holly trees.
Where the whitethorn and the blackthorn,
Spread veils of summer snow,
And whispering round deep meadows
there, the wandering waters go

Tiobar Iosa,  Tiobar Iosa,
at the foot of the Galtees.

Near the little well of Jesus, There is a sign cut in stone,
carved deep of old by hands long cold.
The cross thrice there is shown.
Long years may go much water flow
And men be born and die.
Still these grey old stones bear witness to God on high.

Tiobar Iosa,  Tiobar Iosa
still unchanged as years go by.

From the little well of Jesus three pebbles I will take,
Carry the three along with me,
for sweet remembrance sake.
Some say, maybe, some memory,
Tipperary sweet of thee
may come when I am far from home and give new sight to me.

Tiobar Iosa   Tiobar Iosa.
I will take a memory.

At the little well of Jesus I will breathe a whispered prayer,
Leave a rag--something for offering,
just a token there.
Worlds ways are wide, much may divide.
Days come when friends must part.
Still sweet springing wells of healing rise in these hills of home.

Tiobar Iosa  Tiobar Iosa
I am leaving there my heart.

A beautiful poem Seanie, thanks for sending it in.

CRAFT GRANARY
A beautiful new exhibition by landscape artist Teresa Moran is on display at the Craft Granary in Cahir from 5th to 29th August. Teresa, who is originally from Carrick-on-Suir, is showing landscapes of Tipperary, Waterford, Cork and further afield. The exhibition will be officially opened by Michael Coady, the award-winning Poet and Author, at 7.30pm 5th August at the Craft Granary. If you would like to see some beautiful landscape paintings and hear some wonderful prose, do come along for an enjoyable evening.
Nature is Teresa’s passion, and her work captures the vibrancy and atmosphere of the moment. This exhibition, entitled ‘Echoes,’ is inspired by our beautiful landscape, and the generations who have enjoyed and admired it. Reflections on water echo the land which has accompanied us through time. Her oil paintings and limited editions reflect the ever-changing colours of the mountains, the expanse of the sky, the calming effects of the river, and the power of the sea.
Trained in Italy, in 2005 the artist was invited to show her work at the 5th International Biennale of Contemporary Art in Florence. She exhibits regularly in Ireland and her work is in private and public collections.
See a selection of the artist’s work at www.artbyteresamoran.com.

CAHIR GO LEIR DOG SHOW RESULTS
BY MAUREEN CALVERT
The Dog Show was sponsored by Darren Ward Jewellers.

It was a great pleasure to judge such a large entry, particularly as many of the pedigree dogs were of such high quality. The class winners would not be disgraced at championship shows, and the Best in Show was outstanding, as was the winner of the Open Class, which I am sure will go right to the top when he is mature – he was only 8 months old on the day.
However, it was disappointing and even rather difficult to cope with the late influx of competitors, due to the fact that the times were incorrectly entered on the Programme, the Posters and the Website. The only place that had the correct timing was the info within the Brochure on the Dog Show itself. This being the case particular thanks are due to my seasoned helpers, Aine Geurin, Stacey O’Brien and Keith Cashin, who kept their cool and sorted everything out to perfection.
The results of the judging are as follows:
Class 1 – Puppy
1st - The Taylors’ Boxer Katie; 2nd – Rua, a Red Setter belonging to Tom Coffey;
3rd – Kiaya, Liz Moloney’s Siberian Husky (Golden); 4th – a Shar Pei called Bo Bo, owned by Joanne Clery, Bansha (first Shar Pei at one of these shows).
Class 2 – Terrier or Toy
Winner and subsequent Best in Show, James Kennedy’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier Vic; 2nd – Michelle O’Halloran’s Cavalier King Charles Sally; 3rd – Marie O’Brien’s Chihuahua Chilli; 4th – Eileen Murphy’s West Highland White Terrier Susie.
Class 3 – Non-Sporting
1st – the Husky Kiaya, as before;  2nd – Lisa Dergan’s Bernese Mountain Dog Carly (Mullingar); 3rd – No 51 (no entry form available); 4th – Bo Bo, Shar Pei as before.
Class 4 – Sporting
1st – The Smullen’s Golden Retriever Duggie -see comment above - (Moyglass); 2nd – Russell McFarlane’s English Pointer Buddy (Clogheen); 3rd – No 64 (no entry form available); 4th – Eileen Murphy’s Susie, as above.
Class 5 – Open
James Kennedy’s Vic, Staffi, as above; 2nd Max, a Belgian Shepherd owned by Michael Collins; 3rd – Leanne Rode’s Husky, Alaska; 4th – Brendan Hennessy’s Bullmastiff Massive (well named).
At this point we all took a break, rather later than usual because of the complexities at the start. There was plenty to see and do in the Inch, with great food and some lovely stalls – definitely something which should be built upon in the future, then on to the Fun Classes.
Class 6 – Best Fancy Dress
It was great to see that people are beginning to make an effort for this class, with great results!  1st -  No 57, a really great effort, ‘Bygone Days’ a dog pulling a little cart of sticks, congratulations! 2nd – Casey Allen’s Chloe,  representing a Day Out (Clogheen); 3rd – Gerard Walshe’s Benson as a Scout; 4th – Sasha Buckley’s Rosie, as a Ballerina.
Class 7 - Handsomest Dog & Prettiest Bitch
 Ladies First: 1st – No 57 again; 2nd Rosie again; 3rd -  No 70, Princess; 4th – Henry McFarlane’s Ragz (Clogheen). Now the boys: 1st – Linda McFarlane’s Hugo (Clogheen); 2nd No 60, a very handsome Wolfhound; 3rd – John Shakeshaft’s Bobby; 4th Shane Phillips’ Oscar.

Joseph Browne with Robbie winner of The Darren Ward Dog He Would Like to Take Home Class

Class 8 – Best Veteran
1st – John Shakeshaft’s Bobby, who had recently celebrated his 16th birthday, and is as handsome as ever; Pat O’Halloran’s Patch; Pat (can’t read the name) and his Rose. Some old-timers from past years were missing – their owners have my sympathy.
Class 9 – Dog Darren Ward Would like to Take Home (Darren sponsored the handsome trophies. He picked out the first, and then passed the job on to his daughter – wise man!) 1st – Joseph Browne’s Robbie;  2nd Melanie Devereaux’ lovely Husky; 3rd – No 60, the Wolfhound again; 4th – Jack Smith’s Pug, Jay.
Class 10 – Best Six Legs
The first time this class has been included. Great fun, although two girls in ‘skinnies’ were absolutely unable to bare their legs. Everyone else rolled their trousers up over their knees.   1st – Linds McFarlane & Hugo (again – Clogheen);  2nd – Shane Phillips & Oscar (again); 3rd – Rory Brown & Scrappy; 4th – John Shakeshaft & Bobby (again).
Class 11 – Rescue in Best Condition
All these dogs were such a credit to their owners – why on earth would they have become rescues to begin with? 1st – Freddy McFarlane’s Peppi, rescued from Limerick, after being hit by a car; 2nd – Loren Ward’s Molly, who had a massive wound when she got her; 3rd – No 57; 4th – Sharon O’Connor’s Ruby (Ballylooby).
Class 12 – Dog & Owner Derby
1st – a Samoyed (last year’s winner – entry form gone missing) 2nd, and if I had had another 1st prize, I would have judged this a tie, as this owner ran around the tree instead of touching it and returning – and he still came 2nd” 3rd – Rory Brown’s Scrappy – a bery fast Yorkie! 4th – Gerard Walshe’s  Benson.
Thank you all for your entries. Maureen Calvert.
Thanks Maureen and well done on coping so well with all of the 74 (I think) entries.
