CAHIR NOTES 11TH AUGUST 2010
SOUTH TIPPERARY VOLUNTEER CENTRE OPENS IN CAHIR
The South Tipperary Volunteer Centre last week relocated to the Carrigeen Industrial Estate in Cahir. The Centre has provided volunteers for many events including the recent Stage 2 Tri3 Triathlon Series in Cahir where 70 volunteers were required.
It seems that many people finding that they have a little bit of spare time on their hands register to become volunteers. Some have skills that are very useful as a volunteer, while others enjoy the time spent giving something back and maybe meeting likeminded friends along the way.
If you want to find out about more about the volunteering opportunities available without having to make a commitment or get information on hundreds of different volunteering opportunities, talk to someone with the how, why and where of volunteering and get ongoing support and advice if you want to get involved, they don't charge and everything is confidential.
Don’t forget they also help organisations. They will visit you and help with any issues about taking on volunteers for the first time, or to review current procedures. If you need volunteers they will try to source them for you. They will also come and talk to you about anything to do with volunteering, such as references, good practice, expenses....and much more.
If you would like to hear about some specific volunteering opportunities or if you would just like to hear more about the work of the Centre, please don't hesitate to contact them at Unit 3, Carrigeen Industrial Estate, Cahir, Co Tipperary, Phone number 052 7443407.
You can e-mail the Centre at info@volunteerSouthTipperary.ie or contact them by phone.
Hilery Tarrant who is the Centre Manager can be contacted on 086 8353091, Placement Officer Amanda Quigley on 086 0494840 and Placement Officer Derek Fanning on 0867721067.
South Tipperary Volunteer Centre is supported by the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs
South Tipperary Volunteer Centre is a member of Volunteer Centres Ireland - the National Centre for Volunteering.

CAHIR TIDY TOWNS GROUP
I think everyone would agree that the town is looking very tidy at the moment, a lot has been done, but there is still a lot more to do. The Cahir Tidy Towns group will be meeting this Wednesday night, 11th August at 7pm, in the Castle car park, to continue litter picking throughout the town and on the approach roads. Any volunteers would be very welcome. Please try to bring litter pickers - if you don’t have one, you can get them from the County Council offices or we can provide a few if needed. We will also provide bags. We urge everyone to keep the front of their houses or businesses free of litter. And also to the dog owners, please pick up your dog's litter! It makes for a more pleasant walking experience around the town.
The South Tipp Environmental Competition will be judged in the coming weeks and we need to keep up the good work. The Dolans Super Value sponsored competition will also be judged in the coming weeks and has attracted a record entry which is encouraging. With the 3 competitions running concurrent it is important to keep our guard up.
The ducks are moving around the river and even though many children were disappointed to see that they are gone from their rearing pen, this was the original intention. They are now moving between the main weir and the Doctors River and were spotted walking around the Car Park last Sunday evening and they seem to be adjusting well. Please keep up the feeding as it seems to be helping a lot and also keep an eye on their wellbeing.
For information regarding Cahir Tidy Towns Group please feel free to contact Andy on 086-3609110 or Janette on 086-8032687.
VANDALS INTERRUPTED
I have been informed that there have been a number of attempted break ins and several windows broken in St. Paul’s Church in Cahir in recent months. It seems that the out office has also been broken into twice. This week a petrol tin for the lawn mower was removed and a break into the hall abandoned due to the alarm going off. The petrol can was taken away by the Gardai. It was discovered that the padlocks on the gates had been cut away and the name plate on the gates had been torn down and broken. You could only imagine what these vandals would have done to our beautiful historic church with a can of petrol had they not been disturbed by the alarm and as it was damage was already done.
We must try to be more vigilant when it comes to precious architecture in our town. Maybe those living closest to St. Paul’s should try to set up a Neighbourhood Watch to include this area. It would certainly be welcome by all those citizens that own property along the river side as it seems this area has become a vandal’s paradise in Cahir town.
So please watch out when you are walking in this area and report any suspicious behavior to the local Gardai.
HOSPICE FUNDRAISER
A fundraiser will take place this Friday the 13th of August in The Gatehouse Bar, Castle Street, Cahir, in aid of The Hospice. The fundraiser will have a “Country Theme” with music by “Gundy and Friends” from 8pm. Your support would be much appreciated.
READING TREE AT THE LIBRARY
There are just 3 weeks left for the reading tree scheme at Cahir library. All you need to do is have a minimum of 6 books read by August 31st to get your medal. This year has the biggest readership so far with lots of children reading and the tree is growing really well.
The library will unfortunately be closed for a week from the 23rd -28th August but you will be able to return your last reading scheme titles during the following week.
The knitting circle is growing on Friday mornings. There are lots of members but there is always room for more to join in the fun and you can learn a new skill even if you have no experience. It is not limited to just knitting, there is crochet, tapestry, rug-making, etc. Come and have a look, a chat and a cup of coffee.
New members at the library are always welcome also. The yearly rates are recession busting, with adults at €7, senior citizens at €1.50 and school children are free. Opening times are Monday and Tuesday 2 - 5pm and 6.30 - 8.30pm. On Thursday they are open from 2 - 5pm and Friday 10 - 1pm and 2 - 5pm. They are also open on Saturdays from 10 - 1pm. The only day that they are closed is Wednesday.
I’m a big fan of the library and I think that every child should be encouraged to read so why not bring your child or in my case, grandchild down to Cahir Library to join, it’s free!
