CAHIR NOTES 18TH AUGUST 10
CONSTRUCTION STARTS TO BRING NATURAL GAS TO CAHIR
Bord Gáis Networks have (August 12, 2010) unveiled plans for the construction project to bring natural gas to Cahir in Co. Tipperary. Representatives of Bord Gáis Networks met with key stakeholders to outline the €2 million construction programme, which will see work commence on 16th August, 2010. Bord Gáis Networks expects to have natural gas in Cahir by early 2011.
Cahir will be served from the existing Rochestown AGI (Above Ground Installation) off the Ardfinnan Road. The project includes a 5.8km Feeder Main from here to the edge of the town and approx. 7.5km of Distribution mains throughout the town. Bord Gáis networks has been liaising with the relevant authorities and organizations, as well as businesses and residents along the route of the pipeline, to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum and that all concerned are aware of the planned construction.
Ken Breen, Construction Project Manager, confirmed the company’s plans stating, “This is an important project for South Tipperary and the response from local authorities and key businesses has been very positive. Now that Cahir has met the necessary criteria and is economically viable, we sought and received approval from the Commission for Energy Regulation to bring natural gas to the town. We intend to do so in a way that minimizes disruption to residents and businesses. Local traffic management plans will be in place along the affected routes and all excavations will be backfilled and surfaces restored. ”
Businesses and residents located along the route of the new pipeline network in Cahir will soon be able to avail of clean, efficient natural gas like 640,000 other homes and premises in Ireland. It is anticipated that the first natural gas customer in Cahir will be burning gas early next year. Within Cahir, streets to be provided with gas initially include:
The Square, Church Street, Castle Street, Cashel Road (part of), Mary Street, Bridge Street, Pearse Street, Ardfinnan Road (part of), Convent Road (part of), Mitchelstown Road (part of),Old Church Street, Barrack Street, Clonmel Road (part of), Lower Abbey Street, Kilcommon (part of), Abbey Street (part of) and Carrigeen.
For further information on this project or on connecting to the natural gas network, contact 1850 200 694 or email cahir@bge.ie or log on to www.bordgais.ie/networks. Business customers may call our dedicated Businesslink service on 1850 411 511.
South Tipperary T.D. Tom Hayes has welcomed the news that construction works required to bring natural gas connection to Cahir is to begin in coming days and is to conclude in early 2011. He states;
"The costs incurred by households in heating their homes have increased so much over recent years - with harder winters, and higher oil and solid fuel prices, every household in the country is feeling the pain of fuel bills. I am welcoming this development as it will offer another clean safe alternative to oil and solid fuel heating. It is also a real positive factor for industry in the area."
PROMOTING CAHIR GROUP
The Promoting Cahir Group officially launched a new web-site for the town of Cahir and its surrounding area on June 8th, 2010. The site is aimed at providing information about the town and the surrounding area for visitors from overseas and from within Ireland. ‘Visitors’ would include tourists, people attending events in the area, people coming to do business in the town, people travelling on the M8 and calling in for lunch and so on.
The site already contains a lot of information for visitors—much of which will also be useful to residents of South Tipperary—and this will be added-to over time. The site is profusely illustrated with photographs to show visitors just how beautiful and interesting this part of the country is, and—whilst the main objective for the site is to get people to visit the Cahir area—other local towns are also well represented with information and links to their own web-sites.
The web-site is the second major production for ‘The Promoting Cahir Group’. Last year the group published a 28-page printed ‘Visitor Guide’ to the town which has proved to be very popular with visitors and residents alike. The web-site has actually been ‘live’ for several months and has already gained good recognition with the major search engines. Now that it is established the group will shortly be offering advertising space on the site in order to fund further enhancements and a reprint of the visitor guide.
Original creation of the web-site was partly funded by South Tipperary Development Company, The Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and the EU.
The Promoting Cahir Group is a volunteer organization. It was formed to further the growth of the Cahir area by attracting larger numbers of visitors. The website spearheads this campaign by developing an increased awareness of the area, on a world-wide basis, and the printed ‘Visitor Guide’ provides a useful and convenient reference once the visitor arrives. An effort to remedy the poor signage—so directing more visitors into the area from major roads—is also ongoing. For further information please contact Patrick O’Donovan (Chairperson) on 052 7442730.
If possible, please add a link from your own website to www.visitcahir.ie
For suggestions on content for the web-site (additions and corrections etc.) or for information on advertising and sponsorship, please contact Brendan Davis on 087 2268126.
Check out the website, it also has some fantastic pictures of the Cahir go Leir Festival, Tri3 Series Triathlon and the Crazy Boat Race. It has links to the Cahir Notes and would be invaluable to those who need to promote an event or business or check out/advertise what is available in Cahir and surrounds. Well done to all involved.
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS GROUP
The Tidy towns Committee are as active as ever on the ground with the Litter picking and cleaned up the Mountain Road area last week as well as a quick sweep through the approach roads.
We need residents in all areas to take ownership of their own patch to lighten the load on the dedicated Wednesday and Sunday morning groups. If anyone is interested in joining us or even just looking after your own area, we would like you to contact us so that we can give out information about collection dates and also provide bags and litter pickers. We will let you know about the services that are available and what judging is taking place.
You could also be in with a chance to win prizes for your area but need to talk to some of the committee to register.
The ducks are on the main river along with the Geese and are doing fine. We need to be vigilant on any disturbances to the birds in the coming weeks as this is an important time to get them settled. We will meet as usual next Wednesday evening 7pm to 9pm in the Car Park. For further Information contact Andy Moloney on 086-3609110.

MEMORIAL RUN
A memorial motorbike run took place recently to remember John O’Brien of Cahir who along with Mark Darcy also of Cahir died in a tragic accident last year. The run was in aid of South Tipperary Hospice. More than 60 bikes took part on the day, they gathered at The Punters Rest and by all accounts it was a great run with the weather holding too. The entire group stopped at the scene of the tragedy for a minute’s silence.
So far over €3,600 has been raised for the Hospice with more cards yet to come in. There will be a presentation of the cheque to the Hospice representatives in The Punters Rest on Thursday 19th August. Caroline Conran and family will have a list of thanks and sponsors for next week along with final amount raised.
Well done to all involved.
CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB NOTES?
Our sincere thanks to all who supported our recent cake sale and coffee morning in the Parish Rooms, your generosity as always is much appreciated. The U14 Team had a convincing win in the Ragg during the week over Thurles and is now into the A League County Final. Our best wishes go to the Community games U13 Team who will represent Munster in the all Ireland finals in Athlone on the weekend of the 21st of August.
The Junior B team had their first outing of the year in a game against Newport which was played in Duneske on Friday night last. Newport were a much stronger team but in saying that we saw some great performances from the Cahir Ladies. Aofie O’Gorman showed great courage in the goalmouth with some fine saves while Leanne Hickey played a powerful game at wing back. The two Ashling's - Condon and O' Connor were inspirational at centre field while Aoife Burke made great inroads when she moved position to corner back. Aofie Murray was excellent at wing forward while Marion O' Donnell took her opportunity well and scored a fine goal. Aoife Casey and Marie Claire McCarthy were very accurate with their point taking all evening long. Although each girl on the team gave 110%, alas it was not to be enough, and Newport emerged convincing winners. Their next game will be in Borrisoleigh on Sunday August 29th at 12 noon against the home side.
Panel: Aofie O’Gorman, Marion O’Donnell, Nicola Armitage, Rachel Doyle, Shauna O’Donnell, Aofie Casey, Leanne Hickey, Ashling Condon, Ashling O’Connor, Aoife Burke, Marie Claire McCarthy, Aoife Murray, Donna Casey, Leanne Barrett, Ciara Lonergan, Ciara O’Donnell.
