CAHIR NOTES 25ND AUGUST 10
CAHIR TIDY TOWNS GROUP
The Cahir Area Tidy Towns committee has been busy with litter picking on Sunday Mornings and Wednesday evenings too from 7 – 9pm. As the evenings are getting a bit shorter with daylight fading earlier we will have to look at the work that needs to be completed on busy streets and consider the safety of our members.
Next Wednesday we will meet at 7pm in the Car Park and anyone who would like to contribute should bring along a shovel or brush and wear their High Visibility Vest.
The local Tidy Town Competition is being judged at present but results will not be announced until late September/October. The Committee will hold a meeting in early September to discuss the work completed and also the 3 year plan and what we need to do to move forward.
All residents and traders in the town are asked to make a special effort to maintain the work already completed and make Cahir the most attractive town to visit, work and play that it can be. If the town is thriving in business then it will have a spin off all round, but it’s in our hands to make a difference.

CAHIR CAMOGIE COMMUNITY GAMES
Cahir's U13 Community Games Camogie team has just returned from the national finals in Athlone with coveted All Ireland Gold medals in their hands.
We had the weekend of their dreams with their fantastic team. The first game was on Saturday when we took on Connaught Champions, Claregalway. While Cahir emerged convincing winners on a score line of 7-6 to 3-4, the opposition were no easy walkover.
With the sun shining down on the pitch at Athlone IT, Cahir took to the field with conviction in their own abilities to face Leinster Champions, Lucan of Dublin.
The Cahir team went on to win gold by a margin of 2-8 to 2-4. No words can be used to describe the talent or the heart that this young team exudes, only to say that as parents and supporters the pride we felt when they received their richly deserved gold medals was immeasurable. Manager Mary Howard has put years of work into this team and now it is paying off big time so along with trainers Martin Halpin, Anthony Corcoran and Jane O’Gorman they deserve our complete gratitude and congratulations.
Our sincere thanks to all who traveled up with the team to Athlone at the weekend, to the management and staff at Haydens Hotel, Ballinasloe for a lovely welcome and enjoyable stay on Saturday night, to our fantastic bus driver Dinny Whelan who ferried the girls and supporters all over the weekend and to Cahir House Hotel who had a lovely meal awaiting the girls on their return.

POULMUCKA COUNTY 10 MILE RACE
The Poulmucka Sports & Social Club hosted a very successful county 10 mile road race on Sunday 22nd August. The county chairman complimented the club on the organization on the day and in turn we would like to thank those who manned the 4 water stations without a hitch and the Ladies Committee who as usual excelled.
We would also like to thank the stewards who moved from A to B around the course and were as ever on their game with Traffic diversions and speed control with the help of the Gardai.
Finally, we would like to thank Clonmel AC for allowing us to host the event and the residents on the route who had their pets locked away for the duration of the race.
We hope that the athletes enjoyed the course and thank them for respecting the areas they traveled through and we would welcome feedback from them so that we can improve for future events. So, please text your comments to 086-3609110.
A meeting of the club will be called soon and we must consider running a cross country event during the winter.
DANGER OF BOTTLED WATER LEFT IN CARS
A respected oncologist in America (he treated singer Sheryl Crowe) recently stated that drinking bottled water that has been left in a car has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue.
He warned women not to drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases Dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue. This information is the kind we need to know that just might save lives. Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic.
This information is also being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Do not use plastic containers in microwave, plastic water bottles in freezer or plastic wrap in the microwave. This especially applies to foods that contain fat. Do not freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this also releases dioxins from the plastic. A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.
Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital recently said on a TV program;
We should also not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers, the combination of fat, high heat and plastic releases dioxin into the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food. He also pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran wrap (cling film to us) is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.
Certainly food for thought, as I always leave a bottle of water in the car.
DRAÍOCHT PERFORMERS TRAVEL TO CAVAN
St. Paul’s Community Centre (former church) comes alive every Tuesday and Thursday to this amazing music, song and dance show. The show is receiving a fantastic response. Thursday night’s audience could be heard at top of the Vee shouting MORE, MORE. The group performed an encore to shouts of excitement. Draíocht has been very successful performing to full houses for the past three years and it looks like its set to continue. The renowned Michael Ryan has produced and directed this wonderful show. Everything about the show portrays class and professionalism. The lively and colorful expertise of the dancers will entrance and mesmerize with their speed and finesse.
The musicians include Tara Breen on Fiddle, Tara is a member of the new Donal Lunny band, Ciaran Mulderrig on keyboards, Brendan Clancy on box, Galway man Richard Murray, an old favourite with Draíocht audiences, contributes on pipes, flute and the odd Tipperary Shout and if he gets his way he will have the audience dancing on the tables!! The singer is Sarah Barry and she is due to commence touring with Liam Lawton once her season with Draíocht has completed.
Eighteen performers from Draíocht and from the Michael Ryan School of dancing represented Co. Tipperary and Co. Waterford in the Fleadh Cheoil Na h'Eireann in Cavan from Friday last weekend. They competed in the U12 All Girls Céili and the U15 Mixed Céile competitions. Conor Hartnett will represent Tipperary and Munster in the tin whistle and drumming competitions.
Draíocht took a break while they were competing in the Fleadh Cheoil but have now resumed shows on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
