CAHIR NOTES Wednesday 9th May
TODDLING ALONG FOR BARNARDOS
Little feet took on a BIG feat in the Danone Big Toddle for Barnardos last Thursday. Twelve toddlers from the Parent & Toddler Group in Cahir did their own sponsored Toddle, raising over €600 at the last count

"LITTLE PEOPLE" ROBBED
On. Friday 27th May, Kay, at the long-established "Little People" shop on The Square, was the victim of a carefully planned robbery. Four well-dressed women came into the shop, apparently not together, and while two of them occupied her attention, the other pair went straight to her handbag and snatched it. This bag was not on view, but tucked at the back of the counter, under other things.
The two women with the bag left the shop, while the other couple stood in front of Kay, making it impossible for her to follow them. Kay wishes to thank her fellow traders who were most supportive, and granted access to their CCTV footage. The Gardai too were spot on.
From Kay's point of view, the loss of takings was bad enough, but the keys to her car were in her bag, and pictures of her children when they were small, which are irreplaceable. This was a horrible experience and all her friends and acquaintances send their best wishes to Kay and Little People.
MATTIE MC GRATH LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN
On both Friday and Sunday nights, for his huge fundraiser and again at the Launch of his campaign in Cahir, in the Castle Court Hotel (welcome back, Rita!) Mattie McGrath must have been delighted with the support being evidenced, and not just be party members.
On Sunday, the audience was told that 16 canvassing parties had been out during the day, and it was a rousing, positive night for everyone.
MAYTIME CONCERTS
The superb “Haverdfordwest Ladies Choir2 from Wales is singing in two notable locations: on Saturday 12th May they will be in St Mary's Church, Irishtown, Clonmel and on Sunday 13th May in The Banqueting Hall, Cahir Castle.
The ladies will be accompanied by Clonmel's own Gordonaires and Johnny Mac, as well as a number of local performers.
These are two beautiful settings in what promises to be two lovely evenings of choral music with our fellow Celts.
Both concerts start at 8pm, and tickets at €15 are available at Marian's, O'Connell Street Clonmel and The Heritage, Cahir.
You can make telephone enquiries to Kathleen on 052 21051 and 087 414 3207; Orla on 085 106 5833 and Eileen on 051 41320 or 087 746 1412.
It seems a long time since there was a concert in the Castle, and I am really looking forward to it.

THE FINAL WORD
For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies.
Facts. 1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks that the Kiwis, Aussies, Brits or Americans. 2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks that the Kiwis, Aussies, Brits or Americans. 3. Africans drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Kiwis, Aussies, Brits or Americans. 4. The French eat horsemeat, are weaned on red wine and never put their cheese away properly. But they suffer fewer heart attacks than the Kiwis, Aussies, Brits or Americans. 5. Italians drink large amounts of red win and suffer fewer heart attacks that the Kiwis, Aussies, Brits or Americans. 6. Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks ....etc. Etc. Conclusion. Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

COMGRATULATIONS...
to Bernie O'Brien on the appearance of his Spar shop, on The Square, which is looking great. Also to Jason at Irwin's, who is having a proper job done on the pub – all the old paint removed first of all, which makes a huge difference. Hugh O'Brien and his merry men are going flat out and will be finished soon.
AND THANK YOU ...
to the Area Engineer and Mattie McGrath, who have seen to it that the footpath just along from my house has been repaired and there is now no danger of me breaking my nick (sorry to disappoint you!)
It was good to see some of the areas where the cobbles had sunk on the East side of the Square being sorted out, as well. Now if some mowing could go ahead on the approach roads ...

COFFEE/TEA AFTERNOON AND BRING & BUY On Sunday 13th May, Rev Arthur Carter and Hillary are having a major fundraiser for St Paul's Church at their home. With the lovely weather set to continue, and their beautiful garden to enjoy, I have no doubt that they will have a really success on their hands. |

ALL CHANGE
Karen Murphy has re-arranged almost everything at Interior Concepts / Shoe Heaven. The shoes are now downstairs and a major job has been carried out upstairs, so that all the large pieces of furniture, like the beautiful French beds, plus wardrobes, tables and chairs and so on ,can be displayed to advantage.
This has obviously made room for even more of the amazing accessories on the ground floor, and I always leave with the feeling that I have missed something wonderful. However, the shop is so user-friendly that everyone is encourage to browse and enjoy themselves. I was fascinated by the handbag-lamps – but you will just have to go and have a look, as they beggar description.
FASCINATING VIEWING
For nature-lovers, have a look at www.wavelit.com, and follow the lives of the pair of Red-shafted Flickers, which are North American Woodpeckers, as they rear their young. Wavelit has other sites too, all equally interesting.

CASHEL AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL - Are you willing to help?
They said it could never happen again, but it is happening. Over 300,000 people have been displaced since the start of the conflict in 2003. Over 230,000 Sudanese refugees reside in camps in neighbouring Chad. The human cost of this conflict is enormous, with ordinary people suffering the most.
Will you join us in helping to end the nightmare in Darfur? Trafficking in human beings is a modern form of slavery and is a violation of the dignity, integrity and fundamental rights of the victims. Ireland is both a destination and a transit country for trafficking of women and children, often for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
If you are interested in helping to out an end to human rights abuses, please come along to Cashel Amnesty's next meeting, on Monday night 14th May at Mikey Ryan's pub. For further information you can ring Nuala on 052 62987. |

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB
The club was very busy last Wednesday evening with both our U14 and Junior teams in action. The Junior team were on the road early when they left Cahir and made their way to Gortnahoe to take on the home team. Clara Fahy opened the scoring with a point after only 4 minutes of play and before Gortnahoe had time to think Geraldine O' Donnell had a goal in the back of their net. It was not until the 14th minute before Gortnahoe registered their name on the score board with a goal which was promptly answered with Cahir's Clara Fahy and Claire O' Dwyer scoring a goal and a point respectively. Again before the 20th minute mark in the game, Clare had scored another goal and Anne-Marie O Gorman soloed from her center field position to score a terrific point. Another point from Claire O Dwyer brought the half time score to Cahir 3-4 Gortnahoe 1-0
Clara Fahy once again opened the scoring with a superbly taken point. There was fantastic play from all team members but in particular Nicola Armitage who played a blinder in her position as full back.Another goal in the 20th minute of the second half from Aoife Casey furthered Cahir's lead and when the full time whistle blew the final score was Cahir 4-5 Gortnahoe 1-0. This was the Junior teams first outing for 2007 and well done to all concerned in particular Marie Casey who is being abley assisted by Dereck Davis.
TEAM: Kate O'Donovan, Bronagh Higgins, Nicola Armitage, Shauna Walsh, Jane O Donnell, Catriona Nagle (Capt) Eilish Moloney, Anne Marie O Gorman, Aoife Casey, Clara Fahy, Claire O Dwyer, Marie Claire McCarthy, Niamh Breedy, Molly Walsh, Gerladine O Donnell. Subs used: Sarah Harris, Leanne Hickey, Marion O Donnell, Aoife Burke.
The U 14 team did not have such an easy time when they entertained Carrick at home in Duneske with the throw in at 7pm. Carrick were a much stronger team and even though the Cahir girls put every ounce of strenght into their game unfortunately it was not to be enough to over come Carrick. We saw some lovely passages of play from the likes of Aoife O Gorman and Ashling O Connor while in the backs Donna Casey and Emma Corcoran impressed most.
Training for the U14 team will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 8pm as well as Sunday moorings from 11am to 12noon.
