TIPPERARY SINN FEIN
Cahir Sinn Fein spokesperson Kevin Brunnick has branded the current backlog of 7000 Family Income Supplement Supplement (FIS) Applications as a disgrace. The FIS, which is a tax-free payment for families where the wage earner is on low pay, is administered by the Department of Social & Family Affairs.
According to Mr Brunnick, “the Department confirmed that as of Friday 8th June there was a backlog of 7000 applications and that applications received on 6th March last were about to be processed.
“The FIS by its nature is a payment made to some of the most vulnerable people in our society and the fact that applications are waiting for over three months to be processed is a disgrace.
”The problem is further exacerbated by the fact that as part of the application process, applicants must hand over their P60 and a Certificate of Tax Credits which will only by returned after the application has been processed. This means that applicants cannot apply for other entitlements, such as a Medical Card or GP Only Medical Card, until these documents have been returned.
“It’s about time that this was addressed by the Department and we can only hope that whoever the new Minister will ble, he or she will address this issue as a matter of urgency”.

SUPER SUMMER READ!
Local author Susanne O’Leary has recently had her latest book published, and I swallowed it in one gulp! This great fun read is called “Finding Margo”, and is published by New Island at €9.95.
While “Finding Margo”, I was also re-finding my own love affair with France. Susanne writes of both Paris and the countryside as only one who has lived there and loved it could. I was almost able to smell the Gauloise myself (although I have never been skinny-dipping in a French river).
And the opening, when Margo doesn’t give her husband the right directions when they are driving to Cannes, is something that almost every woman in the world will recognize.
Go on, get the book, you will love it.
BALLYBOOBY PARENT & TODDLER GROUP
The last day for this popular Group, before closing for the summer, will be Monday 18th June, when there will be a Party and Face Painting. Happy holiday, everyone!
WELCOME, ELLIE!
Baby Ellie Gray was born on 9th June, weighing 6lb 3oz to Kashya and Adam. Congratulations to the parents.
THE RIVER HOUSE
I couldn’t stay away from The River House on Monday, when Jason (who has Irwin’s) opened the doors again, having leased the Restaurant. I was delighted to find almost all the original staff there, so the food was as good as ever, and what a super day it was to sit on the sofa and look out at the weir and the Castle.
Luckily, Jason was there to tell me about his plans, which are very exciting and will fill a niche in the market in Cahir, where there is very little to do except go to a pub. There will be a Wine Bar upstairs and evening meals. The lovely building is really conducive to this sort of enterprise, providing a most charismatic setting. Good look Jason, and all the staff. I look forward to many years of enjoying the good food and the atmosphere at The River House.
GREETI NG CARDS TO ORDER
Francesca’s lovely cards, already on sale every Friday at the Country Market, are now available from Little People, too. And I have just seen her new line, with baby Ellie’s picture on a key ring – clever and really nice.
CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB
Our U12 team recorded another win over our near neighbours Brian Borus on Tuesday evening last. We were blessed with glorious weather and in the shadow of the Vee it was a fantastic evening for camogie. Cahir put up a fantastic performance and now await their next game against Boherlahan which is scheduled to be played on Tuesday evening in Duneske.
Our Lady Of Mercy primary school U11 team have won their way into the final of the Cumman na mBun Scoil "C" competition with victories over Carrick On Suir and Ballylooby schools. This final is down to be played on Tuesday June 19th at 2pm in Semple Stadium, Thurles. It would be fantastic for the school and the team if as many parents and supporters as possible could make it to Thurles to show their support for this very young and talented team.
Readers’ news and views are always welcome at 10 Market Yard, at 086 840 5020 and at the e-mail address above. Please let me have your information as early as possible, as Monday morning is my deadline.
