CAHIR NOTES Wednesday 20th June

CLLR ANDY MOLONEY!
Many congratulations to Andy on achieving such a resounding majority at the FF Convention in the Castle Court Hotel on Monday night.  As Chairman of Cahir Development as well as Councillor for the area, he is in a great position to make his mark here.  And everyone who knows him will be confident that he will fill Mattie McGrath’s shoes admirably – and that’s a big ask.

SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS
Although I was unable to attend, owing to prior family commitments, I understand that last Friday’s events in Clogheen, to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of  Parish Priest Fr Pat Butler’s Ordination, were spectacular, to say the least.

Apparently the church has never looked more beautiful and although the inclement weather meant that the buffet had to be moved to the Community Hall, everything else went off without a hitch.  It says a lot for Fr Pat’s long (20 year) friendship with Daniel O’Donnell that the singer flew over from New York for the occasion and returned immediately afterwards.  He sang the Responsorial Psalm Here I am Lord and, during Communion, The Love I have for you my Lord (Only A Shadow).  And he was applauded on each occasion by the capacity attendance.

Supporting Fr Pat were his fellow Jubilarians Fr Pat Gear and Fr Michael O’Brien, as well as Dr Michael Mullins, Fr P Cullen, Fr C Cooney OSA, Fr Jack Meade CSSP, Fr Bernard Frawley CSSP, Fr J Dwan, and Fr Lucey.  Tom Keith gave a Tribute.

To close the celebrations, there was a dance at Cahir House Hotel, the last event under the O’Brien ownership.  I won’t even mention what time that ended!

CREATIVE PATCHWORK
The Craft Granary will be running a free workshop this Saturday, 23rd June, from 10am to 4pm.  This workshop is generously sponsored by Tipperary Leader.  The starting point will be a square of fabric embroidered with the Cahir Castle motif.  Each participant in the workshop will create an individual piece of textile art, while getting experience of traditional skills such as patchwork, embroidery and appliqué.

The lucky 10 who get their names in first (and this really is the limit of the number that can take part), can choose from a variety of fabrics such as linen, wool, cotton, silk, felt or knitted pieces.  The tutor will then assemble the pieces into a wall hanging.

The completed wall hanging will be hung in the Craft Granary.  Sign up by telephoning 086 404 3572.

CAHIR ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
The results of the weekly card game last Friday are as follows:  First, with 14 games, were Rena O’Connor, Breed Ryan;  Second with 11 games were Tom Burke, Bob Condon (the lessons are paying off!)

The Lucky Table prize went to Betty Collins, John O’Connor, Bridget Condon and Mary English (Barnora) and the Raffle was won by Mary Whelan and Teresa Duggan.

The next game will take place this coming Friday 22nd June.  The members of the Committee wish to express their appreciation of the support of all who attend this pleasant gathering.

CAHIR LADIES’ GAELIC FOOTBALL CLUB
The U-12s play in the County A Final this Friday night against Moyle Rovers in Cashel at 7pm. Please show your support of the team who have prepared for this over the last six months.

The U-10s are training on Mo9ndays at 7pm at Duneske. Parents are asked to take their children along, as all are welcome.

Congratulations to the Tipperary U-14 Team on their historic First Munster Title at U-14 level.  They beat Waterford in the Munster B Final in ~Ardfinnan last Saturday on a scoreline of Tipperary 4 -10, Waterford 2-2.

The team was managed by Club Member John  Cuimmins.  The play4ers from the Cahir Club on the panel were Ruth Cummins, Aisling O’Connor, Aisling Higgins, Clionalgh Higgins, Clare Harris and Orla McEniry.

RIVER CLEANING
By the time you read this, the river in front of Cahir Castle (the Doctor’s River) will have been cleaned.  Cllr Seanie Lonergzan is happy that the machinery is to move in on Monday, as well as that the contractors are attending to the sewerage leak.

The Department of Fisheries is monitoring the situation. The Councillor walked the river ban, with a Fisheries representative and his pollution fears were allayed.

The Cahir County Council workers are to be commended on the Trojan work that has been done in the last few weeks.

CAHIR & DISTRICT LADIES’ CLUB
The Club had its last meeting for the summer on Monday 11th June.  Members were given a summary of all that was done throughout the year and were reminded what a busy time they had.  There was a Confidence Course;  Arts & Crafts Course; Games Nights;  Pilates;  Jewellery Nights;  a meal at Cahir Golf Club, a Night at the Dogs and they won’t forget their great nights out Bowling, where they found that there were expert bowlers in the group.

They are meeting on Friday 22nd at 8pm for a meal at the Weng Garden Chinese Restaurant and the summer outing is to Bunratty Medieval Banquet on Friday 6th July, meeting in the Castle Car Park at 6pm.

All the ladies would like to thank the Committee of Trisha Brunnick, Sharon Cagney and Catherine Walsh for a very successful year.  Well done to Trisha for a good year as the new Chairperson and here’s to a few more years.

CAHIR DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
There being no Jackpot winner last week, the total going on to this Wednesday’s Draw is €1,150. The five Lucky Dip winners, each of whom received €35, were:  John O’Connell, AI B;  John & Eleanor Connolly, Ballyea;  Tom Byron, Ballydrehid;  Cahir Community Bingo Committee;  Ellen Broderick, Cahir.

The Draw was witnessed by Tom Burke and the numbers that came up were 6, 16, 21 and 23.  All the profits from the Community Lotto go to the Duneske Leisure Complex and tickets can be purchased up to the last minute (noon on Wednesday) from the Business & Training Centre.

CAHIR DAY CARE CENTRE
The AGM of the Centre was held there on Wednesday 13th June at 8pm, attended by twenty six people. The Chairperson, Tom Burke, reported on a successful year in the running of the Centre.  Tributes were paid to Lil on her very efficient management and also to Tom O’Mahony for his care and attention to clients being transported by the Centre’s bus.

Tributes were also paid to the Treasurer, Tob Condon, and the Secretary, Maria Niland, for their attention to all the necessary details during the year.  All the members of the Committee were complimented for their good attendance record at meetings throughout the year.

The election of the Committee for the coming year was carried out and the following were elected:  Chairperson – Tom Burke;  Vice Chairperson – Peggy O’Brien; Secretary – Mary Plunket;  Treasurer – Bob Condon.  The Committee Members elected were:  Margaret Walsh, Maria Niland, Denis O’Mahony and Andy Ryan including three new members:  Maureen Ryan, Ann Hanrahan, Breeda McGrath.

Maria Niland stepped down from the post of Secretary owing to personal circumstances, but will remain on the Committee.  Nellie Williams also informed the meeting that she would not continue on the Committee for similar reasons. Tributes were paid to both for their work.

A discussion followed the election and concentrated on the financial position of the Centre.  It was pointed out by Bob Condon that the Committee was “in the red” at the present and that the HSE contribution was not adequate to maintain the Committee in a healthy financial state.

Various suggestions were put forward to engage the interest of the general public in Cahir and the surrounding districts in advancing methods of additional financial support.  This matter will have to be followed through in the coming year by the new Committee.

Generally, it was a very satisfactory AGM and all are looking forward to a very successful year in 2007 / 2008.

CAHIR FLOWER & GARDEN CLUB
The monthly meeting of this Club will be held in the Catherine McAuley room on Wednesdayu 27th June at 7ppm.

Work Night. The Theme is “My Favourite Container”, so take along flowers, foliage, oasis etc suitable for the container being used.

Annual Outing.  The bus will be leaving the Castle Car Park at 7:30am on Saturday 30th June.

LISMORE CASTLE ARTS
I was so pleased to be taken to Lismore on Sunday to see two strongly contrasting and very interesting art exhibitions.  One showed very modern installations (in loose boxes), some of which were intensely moving and some that baffled me, and the other is in the actual Castle Art Gallery.  These are absolutely stunning Old Masters. Not too many to give one indigestion, beautifully hung and lit.  We are extraordinarily privileged to have such an exhibition so near Cahir.  Not just for ourselves but for visitors, who can enjoy the drive over the Vee as well as the town when they get there.  (Needless to say, the place is, again, pristine, with masses of flowers in baskets and boxes as well as in municipal displays.)

I was dismayed to find that Barca was closed – not for good I hope – but had a very nice meal in the Indian restaurant near there.

HOME WANTED
Four jet black kittens need good homes.  Their owner, who lives in Rosemount, rescued their mother (and has now had her neutered, I was delighted to hear) and really wants them to be happy pets somewhere.  They are 8 weeks old, and if you are interested please ring 087 123 8677.

TIDY TOWNS
I am sure I am in the majority when I say that I was delighted to hear that Cahir has not been entered into the National Tidy Towns Competition this year, because if it had, it would have been extremely embarrassing!  A lot of good work is going on in resurfacing roads, making pavements safe and in the river, but it is all too late for 2007.

Pity the poor visitors to the town – what an awful impression they must get.  On the last Bank Holiday Monday, Castle Street was piled with litter – there are weeds everywhere, and even private homes and businesses don’t seem to care.  The only flowers in the Square are Liam Roche’s usual fine display, and Mary Condon has her annual little pot of lovely violas out. (She has been discouraged from doing more by the thefts and vandalism that occurs when she does.)

Both sides of the Mitchelstown Road by the High Footpath are in a shocking state and any stuff that has been cut back has been left to collect even more weeds.  And then there are the dogs that are allowed to soil the footpath, with their owners giving no thought to Poop Scoops – or other walkers.

Is there no one who wants to improve the public places in town?

CAHIR PARK LADIES’ SOCCER
Co Tipperary Soccer League Division 1.  On Tuesday 15th May, at Ferryhouse, Cahir Park 1 – Clonmel Celtic 4.  Catriona Nagle scored The Park’s goal with a 25 metre left-footed free kick.  The Player of the Match was Nicola Armitage, who had an outstanding game in goal, with some excellent saves.

FAI Junior Cup, First Round at Cahir Park on Sunday 20th May, Cahir Park 1 – Nenagh 2.  The Park Ladies were unlucky to lose this Cup as it was a late penalty that gave Nenagh victory..  Edith Carroll was on target in the 14th minute with a spectacular volley.  Player of the Match was Jennifer Grant, who had a brilliant game in mid-field.

Division 1 League at Sally Park on Wednesday 29th May, Cahir Park 1, Sally Park 1.  A well deserved draw for the Park, with an equaliser in the 86th minute, an angled right-footed shot by Claire Carroll, who was Player of the Match.  She was impressive in the central defence and switched to the attack late in the game.

League Division 1 Sunday 3rd Ju7ne at Nenagh.  Cahir Park 4, Nenagh 5.  The Park lost out in a 9-goal thriller against Nenagh.  Cahir led 2-0 after 15 minutes. However, Nenagh scored 3 goals to lead 3 – 2 at the interval.

Nenagh went 4 – 2 up – a great comeback by Cahir brought them level at 4 – 4, but Nenagh got a late winner.

Player of the Match was Catriona Nagle playing left full back for the first time, where she had a tremendous game over the 90 minutes.

The Player of the Month Award for May went to Julie Mcahon (Captai n) for her great leadership in all Cahir Park’s games.

CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB
Our U12 girls gave us a thrilling game to watch on Tuesday evening last when they played Boherlahan in Duneske. It was a lovely evening for camogie and the breeze that is always present in Duneske favoured the girls in the first half. As the sliothar was thrown in the talented Ashling McCarthy was first to strike and sent the ball in low and hard to the forwards. A fantastic collection by Roisin Howard rattled the back of the Boherlahan goal to register the opening score of the game. Within minutes a clearance by the Boherlahan backs was pulled on by Carol Casey and again the net was shaking. With two goals to our credit Boherlahan took on the offensive and made some excellent progress into our back line and were rewarded with a fine point. Superb work by all the Cahir team resulted with Rachel Brehony scoring another fine goal to bring the score at half time to Cahir 3-0 Boherlahan 0-1.
With the second half only minutes old Boherlahan were working hard in mid-field and scored a fine goal to worry the Cahir side-line and a further point by the opposition made us all sit up and take notice of this fine work by the Boherlahan team. As the saying goes " when the going gets tough the tough get going" thus Emma Corcoran, our full back came into her own. She moved effortlesely across her back line clearing almost every ball that came her way. Kirsty Downey caught one of these clearances and soloed up the left wing sending a clever pass into Caoimhe Hickey  which ended up in the Boherlahan goal. Two further excellent goals by full forward Rachel Brehony gave Cahir a comfortable win of 6-0 to Boherlahans 2-3. Ashling Moloney gave a fine performance in goal and it was great to see her back in action again. This coming week will see the U 12 team take on St. Mary's on Wednesday evening in Duneske, while both the U13 and U11 school teams will be in action in Semple Stadium on Monday and Tuesday respectivealy in the finals of the Cumman na mBun scoil competitions.
