SYMPATHY
Deepest sympathy to the family of the late Mary O’Brien of Ballyhohan, Ballylooby, Cahir. Mary was interred in Ballylooby on 29th June and will be missed by all of her neighbours and friends. May she rest in peace.
The death took place of Gretta Fitzgerald of Loughloher, a very popular woman and mother. To all of her family, the people of Cahir bestow their deepest sympathy.
BROADBAND
The installation of the Broadband piping seems to be going ahead of schedule. The contractors have almost finished the digging in the Mountain Road and are progressing well. They are about to link up with previously buried piping that was installed at the time of the new sewer works on the Clogheen Road.
MARIA’S FUNDRAISING
The Table Quiz held last Thursday at the Castle Arms in aid of Maria Shine’s project for Special Olympics Ireland was a great success. Maria wishes to thank all the sponsors and the Castle Arms as well as Cllr Seanie Lonergan, who was on hand to be Quizmaster; the Compiler of the questions, Tom Fahey, and the Marker and Scorekeeper Kevin Kelly.
Something in the region of €675 was raised and Maria was quite overwhelmed by the amount of Spot Prizes that were donated, for which she is very grateful.
Another event can be added to her busy schedule, as the Abbey Tavern will be organizing a Charity Night at the end of August. Prepare to be amazed!
SUMMER CLASSICS IN BURNCOURT
An evening of your favourite Summer Classics is being presented by the South Tipperary Rural Arts Group. Iain King & Friends, a classical quartet, will be playing in Burncourt Church on Friday13th July.

CAHIR & DISTRICT LADIES’ CLUB
The ladies enjoyed a good night out at Weng Garden Chinese Restaurant on 22nd June. The food was lovely and they would like to thank the Wengs and the staff of their good service.
The Summer Outing to Bunratty Medieval Banquet is this Friday, 6th July, when they will meet at the Castle Car Park at 6pm. I am sure they are looking forward to a good night out.
NEW FEATURE ON AFRICAM
Wavelit.com has made improvements. When you wake up in the morning, you can watch the Africam LIVE camera and now with their new “Timeshift” button, you can also travel back in time to see what you missed … while you were sleeping. Great stuff!
CAHIR DEVELOMENT COMMUNITY LOTTO
There being no Jackpot winner last week, the 5 Lucky Dip winners each received €30: Rosie O’Regan, Pearse Street; Michael Doyle, Clonmore; Kathleen Moloney, Castlegrace; Maureen Davis, Lisava; Marie & Jackie, c/o Shee & Hawe.
The numbers drawn last Wednesday, witnessed by Tommy Morrissey, were: 3, 16, 21 and 24.
The next draw will take place this Wednesday and tickets can be bought from the Business & Training Centre up to the last minute, which is noon. All the profits from the Community Lotto go to the Duneske Leisure Complex.
IRISH HEART FOUNDATION
There will Church Gate Collections this weekend in aid of the Foundation which, as always, is in need of all the support possible.
POSTERS
I am told there are still some posters up regarding the Post Office change of hands. These are now irrelevant, thanks to Johnny Cummins and Cllr Seanie Lonergan, and should be removed.
It was so nice to go into the PO last week and feel that things are as they should be.
CAHIR FLOWER & GARDEN CLUB
At the Club’s meeting held last Wednesday night, 27th June, a vote of sympathy for Paddy Fitzgerald and family on the death of Gretta Fitzgerald was passed. After a decade of the rosary was repeated, the meeting was adjourned.
DANONE BIG TODDLE
The Tiny Tots Pre-School Daycare in Ballylooby did their own sponsored Danone Big Toddle for Barnardos on 21st June. The toddlers and their families and friends raised €1,017, and Majella Morrissey want to thank everyone who helped to raise this sizeable amount, and particularly Carer Leader Carthy Flannery.
CONCERNS ALLAYED
I was grateful to hear from Deputy Mattie McGrath recently enclosing a letter from Angela Dillon-White, Senior Staff Officer, Water Services Section regarding the sewerage pipe near the footbridge from the Castle Car Park into the Inch. She said:
…“Work was recently carried out on a new pumping station in the car park in Cahir by Earthtech as part of the improvement works under the DBO scheme. Difficulties were encountered during the commissioning of this equipment, which resulted in a minor discharge from an overflow pipe to the river. The contractor has since rectified the problem”.
If this is not the case, please notify Mattie immediately. I don’t go that far very often any more, so am relying on others.
CAHIR CAMOGIE CLUB
After seeing off Nenagh with a very convincing score line our U 12 team are through to a County Final with near neighbours New Inn. No date had been finalised yet for this game but we expect to play in the next week or two. Much had been expected of the game between ourselves and Nenagh, as last year the same match saw Cahir lose by a very narrow margin. But as with all things in life, each year brings with it new and different challenges.
Cahir, this year, proved to be much stronger than Nenagh and well taken, well thought out scores from the likes of Roisin Howard, Ashling McCarthy, Rachel Brehony and Ashling Moloney ensured a very comfortable victory for the Cahir team. Superb play from Carol Casey, Emma Corcoran, Emma Buckley and Edel Lenihan made all these scores attainable but as with all wins, it takes all the team on the pitch as well as the panel of substitutes to win a game.
We now await the tussle with New Inn to find this year's County Champions and it is heartening to see such dedication from these young players as they turn up for training in often miserable weather with smiles on their young faces, eager to play and do well for their Club. The U10 Trainer, Martin Halpin, celebrated a very important milestone last week and all his young charges, along with all in the club send him birthday greetings, and were sure he's glad to know that we will keep this special milestone a secret!
